The speed also varies by where you are located on the ship. Good tip I learned was ask crew members where the best signals are. They are experts at wifi.
We had internet for the first time on a cruise on our first cruise on Anthem last year. It was insanely fast. I watched videos, our son watched You Tube the whole cruise. I played games all week. Loved it and won't be without it again but I don't want to hear lectures about "your on vacation, enjoy it".
Have had the surf and stream package on my 4 rcl cruises on 2 different ships. On ovation (2 cruises) it was fast and streamed netflix no issues. On explorer it was a bit hit and miss (most likely due to being a older ship), 1st cruise it was good for the first 1/2 then went to dial up speeds. Last cruise (a year later - think they had done a upgrade to the ships wifi) had no issues at all. The thing with royal is that they have 2 different packages, the cheaper one (surf only) was really slow according to fellow cruises on all the cruises I've been on , the surf and stream one was a lot faster.
On my 14 day cruise in November on the NCL Bliss I didn't have internet. If I wanted internet it would be $350 us for the whole cruise. I'm Canadian so it's about $450+ CDN dollars. Way too much. And that was the cost before getting on board. I pay $75 cdn a month for my 1 gig internet up and down. I just used free wifi in the ports or my roaming on the go which was $10 a day to use my normal data from back home. And lived without the internet on our sea days. The internet package that ncl gives away is like 250 minutes. So like 4 hours. I think that would be more than enough for checking your email or posting a couple pics a day to Facebook or Instagram for a week. But not for youtube or uploading videos. I talked to some people with the free package and they told me the speed was not great. Just like normal free wifi in a hotel.
Last January when I was on the Regal Princess I had free WiFi so I did check a few emails and check in on FB - and I also watched one of your RU-vid videos (no buffering - the Internet was great - but I don’t upload a lot of content)! I was so excited because you mentioned my name - must have been a Sunday Sofa Time - viewer questions! I was having one of my “not feeling great” days - so I stayed in the lovely balcony cabin - but hearing you mention my name really brightened my day!
Hi, I am assuming the top tier premium packages are not compatible with zoom? I have a upcoming Carnival cruise but need to login for a mandatory meeting. What's the likelihood it will work? Thank you!
I watched your video as i ate my lunch in the Solarium Bistro on the Anthem Of The Seas. I’m on the last day of my 8 day cruise. I purchased the internet package for the trip to keep in touch with family while on the cruise. I noticed that signal strength varies in different parts of the ship. In my room, the signal is weak, but if I go out on the balcony, it’s at full strength. Here in the Solarium, the signal is great also.
Hubby gets the RC Voom pkg for playing games on his phone/laptop. I wasn't a fan till we had to make some emergency calls home on the last trip. Skype was waaaaay cheaper than what they charge to call from the ship. Won't travel wo it now.
I pre-purchased the "social" internet plan on the Carnival Legend to Alaska just to see what it was like. My expectations were low because I fully understand how satellites work but WOW...it was bad! But now I know. I really like posting a photo on FB in real time for friends and family back home but just found it easier to find a Starbucks in port and do it there.
For me, i wasnt worried about speed so much, we just got the very basic social media package. But being able to connect was essential to me having a good time. I had pets at home who need meds and I knew i would be able to relax so much more being able to keep in touch and know everything was going okay, or that I was reachable if they had questions. If it wasnt for that, I really probably could have lived without it! I did go on facebook and post the occasional picture because i could, but just because it was already there. It was weird though, at least for Carnival, it was one device at a time able to connect, per room. Had to keep switching between mine and my moms, that part was quite tedious! But maybe we could have paid more and both connected? But we just dealt with it and enjoyed our trip! It was also handy for keeping in touch with our friends in the next room over. At times wed do separate things for a while and figure out on messenger where to meet up and when. Definitely pros and cons. but definitely spent much less time online than i do at home!! I loved it! Would go back any time! 💖
The loyalty level I have on Princess Cruises gets me 150 min of free internet. It is not for streaming of course. It worked well for Facebook, email etc. I would never pay for it. I do find if I have internet I will use it especially if I have to check email for my next work contract. It is sometimes nice to just unplug.
My first cruise was on Harmony of the Seas and we got internet for one device to test it out. Like you said it was very reliable and fast. We unfortunately had a family member (who wasn't on the trip) who was hospitalized and it was wonderful to be able to text and talk on the skype/ check email. The second cruise we went on was Freedom of the Seas and it was just my husband and myself without the kids. The internet was awful. Thanks to your videos I knew this would like be the case and warned the kids before we left!
Thanks for the information because I’m going on Norwegian Escape in June with my friend, going to Burmuda, I could use WiFi in Burmuda too and I have a haven so I have some free internet and I want to post on Instagram and Snapchat thank you 😊
I only sail (so far) on Royal Caribbean (Explorer, Serenade, Liberty, Adventure) and really haven''t had a problem. I only post to FB and check email. I have recently discovered WiFi calling so I can call my hubby, who does not like to travel and is now 81...I can also check on him via the cameras in the house...it is definitely worth it for my peace of mind. Going on Anthem on Feb 3...I download videos from Netflix to watch if need be...have not done live video yet...random train of thoughts!!!
It's really all an issue of how many people are using it at once, surely? Satellite internet can be fast but ultimately if the ship is full of people all trying to use it at once then you're going to run into issues. Ships could probably pay more for more capacity but I doubt they do, they'll have their tier of service and they can subdivide it and sell it to as many people as they can.
I was on NCL Getaway a month ago, and the Internet was like dial up! 🥺 Paid $120 for 250 min, 1/3 of the minutes were wasted on “loading / trying to connect”.
Good to know! I think most of the people who visit my channel only want to see cruise videos, so I'll be thinking of you when I start posting the Disney vids :-P
Very unOfficial Travel Guides I’m heading down to Florida in March to catch some spring baseball before the season starts and plan on doing a Disney park while I’m there.
I've been on three RC cruises, one with Internet and the other two without. I think the Internet is fast enough, but I really prefer to be disconnected from the outside world. For me, being attached to my phone ruins the whole point of the cruise
Oh btw I went on the Brilliance of the Seas last May and they had really good internet service going around the British Isles & Ireland. I do enjoy other activities but I like having it to text my people back home or watch stuff on RU-vid.
Personally its not worth it for me. I go on cruises to escape from day to day stuff so I am happy to not have the internet for a week. Having said that if I was going for a long cruise then my opinion may be different.
Well said. Going a week without internet is almost as good as being on the cruise. Hard to believe there was a time before internet. Thanks Al Gore! Lolol Ps: I met my now wife on AOL (June 1995) in a chat room. 24 years later here we are. Married July 2001. So I guess it’s not that bad.
What package is the best for just iMessage on the harmony of the seas? I don’t need RU-vid, But want to be able to stay in contact with family. Also, your videos are awesome Morgan.
We are going on our first cruise ever aboard the Harmony of the seas in April and we have been binging your channel for tips and advice. Morgan, we just got an email from Royal about a new program they started called Royal Up where we can bid to upgrade our room. We scoured RU-vid but no one is talking about it, there is so little info and advice about this program. It would be cool if you could find out more and talk about this a little bit, what your thoughts are. Maybe even try it out on your next cruise with Royal as an experiment. We don't know if we're going to do it, I think we're happy with our room, the base line bid to move to a Jr suite is $300 pp and the higher the amount we bid the higher the chance we'll get it, so it sounds like bidding $600 for the two of us won't do it, we'd have to bid like an extra $1000 and I think I like just staying in a Oceanview balcony for the awesome price we paid for it.
Hey! Welcome! NCL does a similar thing after you've booked your cabin. In the end, I feel like it's not really cheaper. It just seems like a way to entice you into spending more money, know what I mean?
@@VeryunOfficialTravelGuides yes, that's the conclusion we ultimately drew. They make it seem cheaper bc they've broken up the price, you're not seeing it as a lump sum anymore. Thank you for your reply! It's great that you stay in touch with your subscribers.
I've always wondered why so many RU-vidrs never write back to anyone in their comments or on their Facebook. I mean, someone like Janna Marbles who gets thousands of comments a day would never be able to keep up, but I feel like it's important to interact and let people know you are really there and listen!
I still force myself to disconnect while on cruises. I feel bad for the people walking around with their phone glued to their face. Hope they don’t accidentally “ fall” overboard while they are scrolling instead of enjoying that view!
I go on cruises for vacation, since there is no internet, nor will I ever pay for it. I love disconnecting from social meida and the internet word all together.
I want a cruise which offers it for free... I'm not going to pay for an internet pack... I will wait until I arrive on any port, go to a bar & enjoy for "free" with a coke. There is also prepaid phone cards with a USB modem for your laptop or using directly on your phone for 7-15-30 days, you can have it! Look it for Amazon or any phone store.
Ohhhh you're trying to hide your balding and receding hairline. I suggest trying the bald look. Not as scary as you might think. You'll get used to it.
