Cruising A Survivor Drop-Top 1967 Olds 442

Any car that has survived more than a half century intact is cool, but when that survivor is a legit 442 Convertible, you're talking downright majestic.
We spotted this one over a Kiwi's shop a couple of months ago, fresh out of storage. Now that he's got her running, we had to burn a few minutes of beautiful Tennessee springtime sunshine tooling around with the top down.

This was when an Oldsmobile was an Oldsmobile. A solid, "gentleman's hotrod". Classy, smooth, reliable, easy to repair and they ran. Even the 307 V8 from 1980-1990 while no powerhouse was a very reliable engine. Oldsmobile V8s are a second favorite of mine next to Pontiac V8s. Even better that this one has factory AC and it's in great shape. A few small details and this is ready for summer cruising. As the expression goes, "They are only original once". The fact that it survived in such good condition is a testament to the care it received over the past 55 years.
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 2 года назад
Having played with engines of all kinds, the original small block Chevy emerged as my favorite engine. There is nothing you can't do with it. And unlike some of the more oddball engines, which may be a little better in certain ways, parts are easy to find for it. Every machine shop knows it well. It can be built from mild to wild. You can build one from the ground up without a single GM part. And if properly built, using the right parts, and properly maintained, it can be made to last forever if you want a daily driver engine. And that is carbureted with no electronics of any kind.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 2 года назад
@@geraldscott4302 That's true. But unique is cool. Everyone has a Chevy V8. Everyone has "souped up" a Chevrolet V8. You can trip over performance parts for it. Oldsmobile, Pontiac and other V8s are harder to do and parts can be a more (but not that much more) challenging to find. There's something unique about having and rooting for what no one else has. Case in point: although the Camaro and Trans Am were the same basic car, when my parents went to look for one, we skipped the Camaro in 1980. The Trans Am was a lot more unique and had things that you couldn't get on a Camaro.

Arthur, "eat your heart out fellas", drove back to college in Denver, in his new metallic dark green 68 olds 442 convertible after winter break. Arthur washed or waxed or polished it almost daily and almost daily he would look at his 442 then look at us with a great big grin and with his boston accent "eat your hear.r.r.t out fellas" . Whenever I see a vintage 442 I hear Arthur and I remember a "quick" road trip from from Denver to Mardi Gras. Before the trip we drove out to the denver airport area where Arthur bought the most powerful aircraft landing light that would run on 12 volts. Wiring it into the high beam circuit shorted the wiring instantly first try. Its own heavy wiring from battery to light to toggle switch and it was night to day on the open road. A quick on off was "memorably" effective in "moving" slower traffic from the left lane. 2 hours into the trip Arthur got a speeding ticket. After that he was happy to share the driving with me for the rest of the trip. With 4 new studded snow tires we zipped through Dallas traffic brought to an ice storm standstill. We never drove over the limit in town. With eyes out to slow down for cops on overpasses we cruised, smooth as could be , just under 100 (for better, under 30 cents per gallon, gas millage). and when the open road was clear, just for fun,........... The best trip memories are not about mardi gras, they are about driving that car.

I still have the engine and trans from dad's daily driven 67 442. The shell rusted away from michigan winters. I parted the car out in 1989 I think. Dad's car always ran real strong. He bought it in 1969 from a GM warren tech center employee who had the car warmed over royal bobcat style there at the tech center. I remember being single digits riding in that 442. All I could see was the dash and door panel. I did save the 442 emblem from the dash too.

The large console in late model cars is partly due to crash regulations . There is structure that is intended to prevent some injuries to lower extremities. Regulations tend to also make late model cars look more alike in external styling.

We bought and restored a 1969 Olds 442 for our daughters 16th birthday. It turned out beautiful...emerald green metal flake with black stripes. She just turned 19 last weekend and I'm relieved to say the car is still in the same condition as it was 3yrs ago! Lol Honestly, that's probably due in large part to the gas prices/inflation/big block situation...she hasn't driven it much; basically a few car shows. We also bought her an 89 foxbody for her daily driver. She slammed a deer after two weeks and nearly totaled it. Fixed it up like new again and she decided she wanted an automatic so I bought it...again. Not a bit spoiled, this only child of mine! Couldn't ask for a better kid though and she is car crazy more than she is boy crazy so I'll gladly humor her while I can. Lol

I know. Such mixed feelings. I LOVE these classic cars, watching UT, and looking for something to rebuild myself. But the exhaust from the cars from those days literally killed. I grew up in Chicago, I remember the low-hanging and eye-burning smog, downtown. You couldn’t even see the light tower on the Playboy Building. So while it’s better that we cleaned up the emissions (and actually made the engines more efficient), there’s nothing like classic iron, and glad people are able to enjoy the ones that are left.

@AerFixus
@AerFixus 2 года назад
@@rickpatterson7438 If it's original, it's a 71. The 72 and 71 can exchange trim, bumpers, and grill without any modifications. But 70 requires changing other parts, like the core support, before the headlight bezels and bumper will fit, so it probably isn't a 70. 70 is also the more desirable car, so unlikely that anyone converted a 70 into a 71. People did swap 72 parts for 71 parts sometimes, though. The 72 bumpers have rubber trim that always cracks or comes off so they are sometimes swapped for the 71 parts without the rubber pieces.

Tony in something besides a Mopar. My first car was a Mopar. A base model 1970 Challenger 318/auto. I have been a Mopar guy, a GM guy, a Ford guy, now I'm just a vintage, pre emissions American car guy. That is a beautiful car. But the flat spotted tires and steering really do need to be fixed. The steering wheel should not turn half a turn before changing the direction of the car. It didn't actually come that way. And it is unsafe. My guess is that all the suspension bushings, ball joints, tie rods, idler arm, center link, maybe even the steering box are worn out, and replacing them will certainly not hurt the value of the car, if it is intended to be driven. The problem will be finding decent parts. I once did some significant damage to the right rear quarter of a vintage car that had never had any bodywork done on it by trying to work the flat spots out of the tires. The right rear tire came apart, and made a real mess. It got fixed, but almost certainly lowered the value of the car. PLEASE don't let anyone put 30" GHETTO REEHUUMS on it or an LS in it.

Other than the cam and size of the 400 Cubic inches one of the reasons Oldsmobiles make monster torque is the long intake runners on the super wide Big Block Olds. Compared to the SS 396 Chevelles the Olds 400 puts out 85 lb/ft more torque than the 396! (although it was down 25hp compared to the SS 396).
