Jökulsárlón is a Glacier Lagoon in Iceland that is formed in the 1930s by the melting and breaking of Breiðamerkurjökull, one of the 31 glacier tongues of the immense Vatnajökull glacier. With its incredible size of around 8000 km2, Vatnajökull covers 8% of Iceland and is one of the biggest glaciers found in Europe.
With depths up to 250m, Jökulsárlón is the deepest lake in Iceland and is home to dozens of seals and different bird species.
In a Zodiac boat you can cover more distance during the tour than an amphibian boat and this makes it possible to visit the glacier wall that is about 8-10 kilometers ahead.
The icebergs you see only represent 10% of their size. 90% is hidden underwater. The Vatnajökull glacier covers multiple volcanos, which results in icebergs covered in ashes.
Icebergs that break off into the glacier lagoon, take up to 5 years of breaking and melting before entering the shallow waters towards the sea. Beached formations of ice turned this area in the famous Diamond Beach.
