1940 Buick Special, taking a cruise in July 2016. I got this car in 2015 and had new valves and seats put in. The lower engine was perfect. Fixed the clutch in July, 2016. Now the car runs like a top.

Great to see a car like this being used for its intended purpose - being driven on the road, and not sitting in a garage. Well done, sir. Well done.

In September 1954, we drove a 1940 Buick super 4 Dr sedan with a nearly new 1953 263 straight 8 from Illinois to Tucson Az, pulling a 30 ft travel trailer ...car did great...no problems and it run great.....wish I still had it....by the way it was exactly the same color as yours.

THANK YOU, that was fun. Recently, I purchased 3 Buicks. A 1937 4-door Slant back, no trunk. It has no motor or trans. A 1946 4-door Special was bought that has sat in a garage since 1962, of course, the motor is stuck. And then a couple of weeks ago, we acquired a 1951 Buick Hearse, garage kept. It still has the 1951 tags on it. I really am a Packard guy but one would think I like Buicks, I do!!! They are excellent cars. You have well organized videos. Thank you. Glen

Years ago my friend,Rick powers,and I were working on the brakes on his wife's 1960 Willys CJ-5. I made a pressure bleeder out of an empty propane cylinder by brazing pipe nipples to the top and bottom and an air fitting at the top. I got an old master cylinder cap that fit the new one and drilled it so I could braze a pipe nipple to it and connected both together with a piece of fuel line and hose clamps. We installed all new hoses,a new master cylinder and wheel cylinders plus new brake shoes and turned the drums. I filled the bleeder with brake fluid and connected the air set to 3 psi.Worked like a champ!

my kind of buick and response to assholes telling you how bad it looks. i'd leave it unpainted, "lived in" and in great shape mechanically. driveway jewelry and garage queens need not apply.

Coincidentally, my '40 Special (Model 41) also has a 263, but the original engine was 248. I got the 263 from a '52. No external differences, as far as I know, except the mounts, but the 263 used insert rod bearings starting during 1949 production, while earlier 263s and 248s used babbited rods. Thanks for the ride. I agree about the brakes being just fine, thank you. Big drums with a lot of swept area make for good stopping power. I've seen rear disc bake pads smaller (literally) than some postage stamps, so there's more to understand about brakes than "disc brakes are better."
@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 6 лет назад
The '52 engine has bigger oil filter and it's easy to get replacement filters and other parts at NAPA you can't get for the 248 motor

Love the sound of that straight 8 does that engine have frost plugs? Any plans to go to a 12 volt system?
@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 6 лет назад
Frost plugs are original. 12 volt no fucking way.
@michaelbenardo5695
@michaelbenardo5695 2 года назад
There is no need to convert to 12 volts. If you use 1 gauge battery cables, 6 volts works fine, and if you want more power, you can use an 8 volt battery. Even Amazon sells them. All you have to do is have your regulator re-calibrated.

The Buick,as big and heavy that it is,even with "good brakes"...could use a Jake Brake,like in Big Rigs,to assist in slowing it down lol
@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 6 лет назад
Actually the brakes are pretty good on this car. I put on new shoes and turned the drums, and put new wheel cylinders. They brake like any car now.

The Special and even the Century are the "small" Buicks, and are not all that heavy. About 3800 lbs. at the most. The Roadmaster was over 4,000 lbs., the Limited about 5,000 lbs.
@robertjonasson2527
@robertjonasson2527 7 лет назад
I hope you changed all the brake hoses and master cylinder.No isolation valves on these old vehicles.
@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 7 лет назад
Brake hoses? They are not hoses, they are steel. All original and no rust at all, not going to change them. Got 4 wheel cylinders though to be safe, and have a new master cylinder waiting to go in.
@robertjonasson2527
@robertjonasson2527 7 лет назад
You do have hoses up front.They are stainless steel braid covered.You have to have a flexible connection between the terminus of the brake lines and the steerable front wheels.I once had a burst brake hose on my 1955 Plymouth sedan back in 1965 and I lost all my brake fluid.I had to drive a few blocks using the emergency brake to get to a gas station and have the hoses replaced.Today I have all the tools to do this myself.
@hyzercreek

OK I was thinking of the rear. Use a space after the period so the letters don't turn blue.like this

That is a nice looking car. The oil and temp gauge problems might be just the sending units or wiring leading to the instrument panel. Nice job so far! My favorite classic car is the '55 T Bird.
@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 7 лет назад
Took the dash panel out to change the speedometer to a mint one I got on ebay, took the opportunity to get the decomposed plastic out of the oil gauge and temp gauge and they both work now.

youtoobe169 7/1comp,slow is enough.
@michaelbenardo5695
@michaelbenardo5695 2 года назад
It shouldn't crank that slow. I remember when there were lots of cars like this still on the road, and they cranked much better than that. Are you using 1 gauge battery cables? You can't use 4 gauge with a 6 volt system. 6 volt starters draw twice the amps as 12 volt starters.

I'm going to see the truth you going to be a very disappointed that if you see a classic car you want this you want to be the original owner to take care of it but you can to drive on the railroad that probably doesn't even have a seatbelt on it too that's the problem if you really want to pass the inspection of this car it is unbelievable that you need to get a new one good luck anyway
