I lived about 8 miles away from Crumlin viaduct from my birth in 1941 up to 1960 (university) and remember its soaring majesty as it strode across the valley over Newbridge and Crumlin. Sadly, I never travelled over it. What a monument to the engineers who built it to have been tragically lost from our industrial heritage!
this video is one of the most evocative I have ever seen about the south Wales Valleys railways. Thank you . I remember when this beautiful Crumlin Viaduct structure was demolished - had the newspapers reports and photos of it in my scrapbook as a child. What a shame it had to go but I still love and see these valleys as though nothing has changed ... but it has....
Thank you for this wonderful piece of nostalgia. I was born and brought up in Newbridge in the 1950's and vividly remember going to the cinema in Crumlin on Saturdaymownings
Truly heartbreaking to see in videos like this how we lost such a fantastic system for transporting passengers and freight to decision makers who had no conscience, no foresight for the needs of the future and no understanding of the dire consequences that closing these railways would have on society and the environment.
