CRUNK MUSIC HISTORY with Charlie Braxton | Pretty Tony, Three 6 Mafia, Lil Jon

Crunk Music, or Krunk Music, did not begin with Lil Jon & The Eastside Boys. Many artists in Southern Hip Hop contributed to the evolution of Crunk music, notably, DJ Spanish Fly, Pretty Tony, 8Ball & MJG, Three 6 Mafia, David Banner, UGK, A-Dam-Shame, Hitman Sammy Sam, & Pastor Troy.
Crunk Music has a long history in Southern Hip Hop and has evolved by picking up elements from Memphis Buck music, Miami Bass music, Atlanta Bass music (Bankhead Bounce), and even New Orleans Bounce music. Hip Hop historian and journalist Charlie Braxton interviews with Heit The Great to explain the history and the evolution of Hip Hop genre Crunk, popularized by Lil Jon as Krunk, and later evolved into Trap Music.

I always loved crunk music. I prefer most gfunk and crunk music from the 90s and 2000s. I love fast and wild music like "atl bombsquad" vol 3 and 4? Both cds are so on fire. What type of crunk is that?

He's actually not 100% accurate in his description of what "crunk" is. We actually used crunk as a noun in ga/atl waaaayyyyy back. Example..."hey did yall go to the football game last friday"..."yea man, it was crunk as hell out there". It was never "crazy + drunk" lol. Plus Oomp Camp and Sammy Sam was doing "crunk" and gangsta music way before Lil Jon. And then Pastor Troy came and brought a lot of clones like Miracle, Drama etc.

THE WORD CRUNK COMES FROM MEMPHIS
@doublec4431
@doublec4431 3 года назад
No it did not at all okay it makes me mad and sick that Jacksonville, FL don't get the credit for creating new slang words at all that get picked up on nationwide. I got real ticked off when I read up on the origin of the word used in a slang/street way. Miami and Atlanta niggaz always gotta get the credit for everything first because they're a more popular city than Jacksonville, Florida. The word crunk been getting said in Jacksonville, FL every since 1988 or 1989 or maybe even a few years earlier or prior to. Because when I was 9 or 10 years old hearing niggas saying this on the streets of the Lackawanna in Jacksonville, Florida "that's it you lit plus just crunk and drunk lika skunk". I got relatives in Miami and as a kid when me and my cousin Shaeon from Miami, seen each other and hung out. I said the word to him, he was lost, and did not know what the work crunk meant in a slang way at all. He was totally lost. My cousin was like people be saying "they drunk, lit, tore up from thee floor up, or tore from the floor". Before then everybody was only saying " That's it you drunk and lit". It obviously traveled to Miami and Atlanta first because Jacksonville, Fl is in the middle of travelling between or to both cities. Then it hit Memphis, Tennessee afterwards and got took to a whole another other level.

I’ve revisited this video at least 10 times and the conclusion I came too is Memphis crunk and Atlanta crunk are two sibling genres one more inspired by buck music the other more inspired by Miami and later on Atlanta bass music The difference between trap and crunk if we’re talking about around the 00s is literally just subject matter you had trap songs over crunk production when there wasn’t such a distinction between the genres, Memphis was making crunk songs in 96 over beats that would be considered trap in 2024

Now I will say this Lil' Jon and 3-6 Mafia made crunk/hype music very popular and used the word more than any other rappers. There's no other rappers using that word or making more songs on album with that type of music than Lil' Jon and Three Six Mafia at all. But it truly originated out of Jacksonville, Florida either in the neighborhood of Lackawanna, HolyBrook, Mixon Town, Moncrief, or Cleveland Arms back in 1988 or 1989 or maybe even a few years prior. Miami, Atlanta, and Memphis all get the credit first though only because they the more popular cities.

@@doublec4431 yeah but that's still not what is called Crunk music and no they did not create Crunk music 36 Mafia did when they formed the group Backyard Possie Back in 1988 then later evolved to 36 Mafia in 1991 the song Tear Da Club Up made in 1992 was so Crunk and got people so amped up that is was banned because every time it was played people started literally tearing the clup up their song Hit a Muthaf**ka was banned because people got so Crunk their starting fighting...because it was the original Crunk music,so raw and gritty authentic they are the true originators of Crunk and Trap Music they...it was said that when they came out their music was the first of it's kind and so different they couldn't get a deal so if people like Lemonhead was around doing what 36 did they would have faced the same problems

@@royorkesjr.8386 C.C. Lemonhead and Jay Ski switched their style to the bootie hopping dance music and helped form The 69 Boys, Quad City DJs, and 95 South. "Ghetto Style" was a hood track that was hype like Crunk music they just wasn't yelling and screaming throughout the whole song.

@Memphis9014Eva I like Youngbuck and 3 6 Mafia besides Eightball and EMG rap music outta Tennessee. Nobody else though. All of that horror core ain't and Drill music ain't nothing but another word for gangster and demonic style rap about killing and bodying people. Besides talking how you messing them up in so many horrorfying different ways possible. Everybody has their own form of booty hopping music. Memphis is a killing zone and one of the worst ones in the United States 🇺🇸 but the majority of the rappers that I heard who was underground from there are not that lyrical at all.

The Dirty States DVD is one of my all time favorites as well Heit. It was a snapshot of what southern hip hop was at the time. On another note, Ichiban Records put out Vanilla Ices first album.

I think todays rap was influenced by the heavy bass , fat 808's , harmony and melody of southern music which was inspired by the blues, that came from slaves being oppressed. So the White mans negitive actions lead to the positive classics we we enjoy today!! Todays music is definitely Subwoofer friendly!!!! My 12 W7's are happy, but the auto tune has to go.........😐

What would you call the Bankhead Bounce? Cause that song was not a Crunk or Snap song yet it defines Atlanta music at the time which opened the door for Trap to come in which is strictly Atlanta music that has went all around the world. Mane, we in Memphis love Texas music, but CRUNK didn't start in Texas, it's a word we just say to express how we feel!! It's really nothing about music, so we started getting CRUNK in our music!!
