Amen. And don't forget the Battle of Lepanto. Tired of people today trashing the Crusades and Crusaders. They fought for what they believed in and most of them sold property and exhausted what they had to fight for Christendom. It's very fashionable to dis them today but most people I hear doing this have no idea of the history of the Crusades. God Bless those who fought for what they believed in.
You also have to consider that the crusaders fought a defensive war in that they after 750 years of Muslim attacks on Christian countries tried to reconquer one former Christian country.
i am not a muslim and i can say if i would be one i would laugh my ass off sure one of the greatest battle strategist runs away when he hear random singing this is so dumb and racist lol well he was the "evil sarazen" so its fine :)
@@tchitcho5169 Saladin is not considered as one of the 10 greats general of all times by military historians. One of the reasons is that Saladin was was quite good at running away. For example after the battle of Montgisard were Saladin's army was destroyed by Balduin IV of Jerusalem or after the battle of Arsuf, where Saladin's army was destroyed by the crusader army under Richard I Lionheart of England. Saladin had the fortune that all his more comptent enemies died before him (Balduin IV / Nur al Din) or had to leave the holy land because of troubles at home (Richard I). In that regards he was like Philippe August of France who also managed to survive all more competent enemies. (Henry II and Richard I of England) and won against a incompetent leader (John without Land)
Funny how the followers of Ishmael and Isaac have been fighting over 2 centuries and have not found the way of peace. One professes to follow a Saviour who was forgiveness, love and peace , yet lusts for the battlefield even with citizens of their own country. Wonder what Abraham would say today. Maybe sending Ishmael away caused a rift that will never be conquered because they never learned to live as brothers. I think the last verse sums up humanity pretty well, the only Wiseman is the fool.
I think you may have missed the point of the line. You'll notice it was spoken by The Fool. I think the implication is that the fool has an overly romanticized view of the crusades. The message of the song, I think, is that war has always been evil, for the same reasons as today. The choruses, "I am the king" vs "God is our king," reflect two different worldviews - one of self-worship, on the part of Saladin, and one of religious fanaticism, on the part of the crusaders. Obviously these are not historically-accurate portrayals of the figures involved, but fictionalized to make a point as a sort of a parable. The song of the crusader is still with us, the song is saying - but it was always one of greed and evil. Alternatively, one could argue that the claim of greed and evil is false, and that a noble song of the crusader is still with us. In either case, don't listen to the Fool - he's wrong.
It depends on whether you see the fool as a fool or a jester. Often, the fool is employed as a proto-stage to a wise man or wisdom as such. Or a sharer of unexpected insight. Moreover, don't ignore the juxtaposition of wise man - fool. The stanza further explicitly contrasts the wise man's search for truth in the past, whilst the fool pragmatically looks at the present. And remarks that the wise man's desire and life's work to reproduce what got enemies together nowadays is impossible due to a lack of purity, taken over by greed and evil. I personally don't see a trace of your reading if you respect the archetypal uses of wise man and fool. I guess we can agree it's an intriguing lyrical presentation and a lot of food for thought:)
@@TheOneAndOnlyMrTino This is true! However, I would argue that first, there was never purity (supported by preceding verses, in which the crusaders are presented as violent religious fanatics), and second, a lack of purity does not imply a lack of goodness. Due to the apparent naivete of the fool in this stanza, I would argue that he is not a jester, but is in fact a fool. The wise man is a hopeful figure, imagining that, and I quote, "could it be that way again?" Depending on your interpretation of the preceding verses, he might be considered naive in his belief in the nobility of the crusaders, or just idealistic. Either way, he is looking for solutions and hope, while the fool just dismisses the past and its ideals as dead, while the present is hopeless - a very nihilistic, and in my opinion, foolish position to take. Yes, there are greedy and evil men fighting today, but so were there in the past, and while Jerusalem may be lost, the song of the Crusader need not be, for there are also still good men fighting today, sometimes on the same side as the evil ones. TL;DR: You made an important point about the symbolism of the fool. However, looking at the larger context of the song, I suspect your interpretation may be mistaken.
@@SuperBartles Yeah I know. I know who I am. I know what I was. I know who he meant to me. Sometimes, I forget that time doesn't travel the way I'd like it to. Be Safe.
Although I have liked De Burgh's music for more years than I like to admit, this is the first time that I have actually listened intently to the lyrics. The true magic of this track is contained at the end. The lyrics are 'There is only greed and evil in the hearts of men today. However misguided those before us were, the great driver for them was belief in something above them. Christian or Muslim. Today we slaughter each other for the profits of faceless men.
Exactly, and that is why this is my favourite song. Only when we hear that last verse do we truly understand what he means when he cries, "Jerusalem is lost!"
Very nice though. However,i believe those before us still fough for profits.Difference throughout the centuries is the motive they tell the mass. Before it was religion. Now its leftists and rights..tomorrow something else
Wow, what an amazing song, I never knew Chris de Burgh did that. The crusaders really deserve a memorial day in all countries, and maybe we need some new crusades and the spirit of the brave crusaders today.
If you read the history of the crusades you would think differently. Most of them were a rag-tag bunch of mercenaries who tended to fight battles with anyone they came across, whether Jews, Muslims or Christians. They killed a lot of innocent people on the way to the holy land. Many of them never got there, choosing to settle in Byzantium instead.
Neither of these Mus lim and Ch ristian zealots that wasted so much resources and lives for their “imaginary all powerful friend” deserve respect…if anything a day to reflect on how humanity fell so behind due to these made up nonsenses…
This song always takes me back to the mid-80s when I was twenty something. Listening to this album, burning incense, tinkling ankle bracelets and big dreams.
I don't agree with that. Chris has produced many more great songs and still does to this day. Listen to 'The road to freedom', 'Spirit', 'Moonfleet Bay', 'Songbird', 'The keeper of the keys', 'Legacy'....
My History teacher introduced me to this awesome artist, whom I saw in concert few years back, by explaining the class about Richard Lionheart and the Crusades. Thanks for the share.
revisiting my play list to tell a the story of the greatest scam of man kind - through song from 2020 to present day I find - chris has released the revelation..
Such a perfect video, really wonderful and enhances the song to show it at it's finest. Fabulous and, I imagine, huge work and editing . Thank you so much 🙏
There is not much to add..every single word tells a story...a truthful one anyway, when Chris writes a song or a brilliant ballad, like this one.. He is not comparable - he is unique in every possible way snd view..❤🎉
When I was younger I was introduced the C de B and in particular this track which is immense. The structure is so strong and yet so simple. The arrangement is spot on. He is the master of story telling - that is what it is just a story. The C de B of those days was melodic and adventureous and unrivalled. He reminds me of another great - Elton John who also pushed boundaries early on but now struggles to come up with anything new and interesting these days.
I can confirm as a Catholic, that this re-telling of the first Sacred Holy Land Crusader reconquering Jerusalem is more accurate than the thoughts that most people think of the Most Holy Crusades.☦️🏴✝️
Sacred, Holy ??? In whos name, God? Purest war waged for riches on earth, not heaven. By the Catholic church. Murder blessed by Popes and intolerant bigots of Royal Kingdoms. Just saying,, besides, this song is brilliant, Chris is a great Irish talent. Totally anti war and a lover of peace. Seen him in concert in Belfast, the song'Border li e was sung by entire audience of mixed relegion people, not a crusader in sight 😁
Wilt thou a Templar become ? Or a Knight of St John ? So many choices if thy heart be true. Consider it like a foreign holiday - you get to stay in provided accommodation throughout the Eastern Mediterranean - but in return you have to swear holy orders and bear a sword on behalf of His Holiness the Pope - and never give up your vow, or question your orders - on pain of death. If Templar thou seekest - then take credit from the finest families in all of Europe thou shalt, and charge interest thereto, and ye shall find thy reward not only in Heaven but on Earth also, lest ye be accused of heresy when the King of France won't pay up. And unto this I say therefore Templar, bury thy wealth in place far and unknown where no King or Cardinal can find it, or use it without paying due. And thus ye shall create a legend !
I have question why not Christian’s not taking over Jerusalem the holy land again ? Isn’t better to be with you instead Arab and Jewish who can’t stop fighting and they will keep fighting forever I think
This is probably one of my all time favorite songs. It seems to echo through my soul and speaks to me in ways much deeper than religion. It illistrates the barbarism of humanity and what people will do in the name of their gods. This song is incredible..
Love Chris de Burgh and musically this one is great. I understand his aim to meld Protestants and Catholics with this. but he does injustice to Salidan, who from all accounts was an extremely honorable man. No plundering and gave quarter to all who capitulated. Not so much for the crusaders.
Tomorrow is the feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary. It was made mandatory for all Catholics by Pope Innocent XI in honor of King John Sobieski's victory in Vienna. Dignare me laudare te, Virgo sacrata: da mihi virtutem contra hostes tuos. God bless you bros.
@Gstyle you filthy abdool. If Europe gone crazy now (leftist stupidity) it doesn't mean it'll be like now forever. Btw have you bowed down to your black stone idol today yet?
This song mislead me for nearly 30 years! I, a Chinese-speaking ethnic Chinese from Taiwan, fell in love with this song the first time I heard it some 20 or 30 years ago. Great storytelling, great musical arrangement, great everything! I loved it so much that I know all the lyrics by heart and can sing along the entire song from begin to finish. (to be continued)
Chris has been understood his voice is amazing. I was listening to him since I was 30 years old I just started to listening to him again why's has it thaken me so long to find him
@@pinSjon79 This is a hollywood version of the truth, where the bad arab were chased from the holly city, and the good western men, have saved the world once more. I'd like to take a look at chirs's librairy.
@@pinSjon79 villifying muslims. Speaking from a catholic point of view. Needless to say this is the strongest piece of art speaking about such a huge piece of our collective history. The clash. Before amd evetually leading to the world wars.
@@issamcovers8222 Chris has later on published songs with a more reflected view, for example in 'One world' where he says that believing in God 'doesn't mean that my god is greater than yours, it only means we all have the right to believe, 'cause nobody knows it for sure'. I definitely prefer that point of view to the one in the 'Crusader' lyrics. Nevertheless musically 'Crusader' is a masterpiece.
I remembered seeing him in concert in San Antonio, Texas in 1978 or 79! He was the opening act for Peter Frampton! He said that he hoped one day that he would become the main act! I feel he never accomplished his goal but did have some success! The Crusader and the Devils eye were my favorite songs of his!
Chris certainly did reach his goal! I have been to the Rock am Ring festival in 1985 where he was listed as headliner before U2 and Joe Cocker with an audience of 70.000 people. And he was absolutely amazing.
When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. Isa 59:19 Stand up and fight people, it's now or never

There is No One Righteous (Psalm 14:1-7) 9What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17And the way of peace have they not known: 18There is no fear of God before their eyes. @Findlay Robertson I think I would rather believe the majority of scientists, even if they believe in a dead god, than believe in your opinion, do tell me sir, what are your qualifications compared to these scientists?????
I love chris de burgh too hes a very kindhearted and loving and caring man who goes out of his way to make his fans feel like they matter to him especially disabled people and he is very funny and very cheeky too and he loves making people feel good too and i love him like mad
In Saladin's defense, no historic source claimed he was a drunk, and even his foes pointed out his magnanimity as a knight in many occasions. Respect to the real artist (chris de burgh).
Great song if a little historically inaccurate. An-Nasir Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub (Saladin 1138 - 1193) was a devout muslim, very humble and showed great compassion to his people and to his enemies. Richard I (the lionheart) particapated in the 3rd crusade and was not exactly an example of christian mercy, ordering the execution of 2500 muslim prisoners after the siege of Acre in 1191. Richard I (the lionheart) never actually attacked Jerusalem but did defeat Saladin at the battle of Arsuf 1191.He never returned to England dying at a siege in France.
💜we met many many years ago x You stopped on the Zebra crossing on a back local road in Cornwall ...Eric Rose was I'm charge of all performances and keeping everyone happy x
All you who so fashionably like to dis the Crusades and the Crusaders because you are such goooodddd people and so moral and understanding and "hip"...let me just point out to you...centuries of Muslim conquest and piracy led to a European response. Look at the Battle of Tours, for example, and the conquest of Spain and the attacks on the Italian peninsula. You who are so liberal and hip, you better thank God for what the Crusaders did. If it hadn't been for them, for men before then like Charles Martel, for the Knights of St John who fought the battle of Malta after the Crusades and for the victory of Christendom at LePanto, you wouldn't be having a free debate. You'd be under sharia law and bowing to Mecca. May God Bless the Holy Crusaders! Thank you for your sacrifice and your service!!!!
john therealstig The sad thing is you probably patted yourself on the back when you wrote this thinking how it would really get me. I find your comment....sadly amusing...I'll bet if you are honest with yourself you'll admit you've never read any real history about the Crusades. You're parroting the same nonsense without any backing or documentation. I'm sure someone just told you this and you just, well, believed it with the deep mind you obviously have. You poor sap. I hope when Shariah law finally descends on you you'll enjoy yourself. And stand your non-Christian ground.
Jack Sprat "You're parroting the same nonsense without any backing or documentation." ha ha ha very good coming from a thesist your god is imaginary and even if he were not doesn't your 2000 year old book tell you to practise love and understanding? luke 16.31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. You as a believer are a far higher risk of "Gods" wrath for not practising his laws, so presumably now we have identified your sinning you will be looking forward to your stay in hell? To recap You based on 1 comment from me have judged and condemmed me very very christian of you, i am poor sap, dishonest and uneducated. When you freaks start practicing what you preach the world will start to take you seriously (well probably not)
john therealstig I will pray for you. You are a poor sap. I didn't say you were uneducated, just that you had not read about the Crusades. You just proved my point. All you have done is attacked me for believing in God and at the same time you quote scripture. How many faces do you see in the mirror?
Jack Sprat What you said was a clear arrogant and judgmental attempt to demean me and ergo boost your own flagging belief through an assumed intellectual superiority in none believers. You said "believed it with the deep mind you obviously have" incredibly arrogant sarcastic and judgmental comment from you. Its time to practice what you preach. What right do you have to be so judgmental of me? Do you have the right through your belief?
He had a Peace treaty written in 1197 , that was the only time Richard the the Lionheart set foot in Jerusalem. I did Late Medieval history ( focusing on the crusades).
Robert Niven Sadly, he was quite orthodox, but he has since died and been flushed down the toilet. I think his powers are now more infernal than divine.
Yes but the meaning and the story are everything. My love of this type of thing is very strong , I like the feeling and the history in this kind of story telling, somewhat like broadsword by Ian Anderson. FANTASTIC.
I can understand your comment, and I and I doubt anyone else would argue with that - it's just the whining that bugs me and the fighting over religion. It's pathetic. I like DeBurgh because he doesn't always sing about love and a woman he thinks is sexy in a red dress, oh wait, nevermind ;)
Eurobunneh yes please enjoy Chris and stop arguing about religion before I kill you all with my wrath hahaha kneel before me and kiss my shadow I luv you all
"What do I do now?" said the wise man to the fool, "I have spent my whole life searching, to find the Golden Rule, Though centuries have disappeared, the memory still remains, Of those enemies together, could it be that way again?" Then the fool said "Oh you wise men, you really make me laugh, With your talk of vast persuasion and searching through the past, There is only greed and evil in the men who fight today, The song of the Crusader has long since gone away.................................................................
This song is fantastic history! I have been living in Jerusalem for 3 years and I completely understand why people have fought and died over such a majestic city. Though I don't appreciate the carnage of Jews, Christians, and Muslims during the Crusades, this song is a wonderful story and the poetry is touching...not corny...
