Actually this was the principle used for the first steam engines, the cylinder was filled with steam while the piston was at the bottom dead centre and then the steam was cooled down. Question: couldn’t he just have put the barrel in the ice without pouring the water in since the air inside (which consists of nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and co2) would then cool down and thus create the necessary pressure imbalance triggering the crushing by the outside pressure? I’m confused..
