Filming on the shadow side is one way of saying “far side key”. It’s a common cinematography technique that filmmakers use to create contrast, emotion and depth. They put the key light on the far side of shooting to have a 2-1 or 3-1 lighting ratio. 2 stops on the far side and 1 stop on the fill.

YC you are one of my RU-vid teachers! Will be 100%. 1) hold the shot. 2) frame for your wide 3) separation 4) don’t shoot to the bright side. (Guilty haha true story) 5) come on, white walls? You need something to look at. These are all things I need to try harder to remember when planning and filming. Thank you!

That tip about framing for wide shots first is the one. I hadn't even thought of that but it would greatly improve my workflow. I agree about separation of your subject 100% too. Funny, I had an artist say once that he didn't feel a video was professional unless everything was in focus (no shallow depth of field at all) and lit the same way. I was like, "Dude, I ain't interested in shooting your videos then".

Dope video man, really practical tips! I literally was editing a video earlier and realised the final shot was just 2-3 seconds short of being PERFECT! Gotta stop being trigger-happy and let the shot run a bit longer for sure. And the shadow side tip! I recently learned this while composing the B-cam for my talking head shots. I didn't realise how much difference it makes to have the B-cam shooting from the shadow side to create a lot more depth in the shadows and to 'shape the face'. Keep it up man, loving the videos 🙌

2 of them stand out for me: Filming on the shadow side When I started doing this it really helped me to understand that lighting isn't just about exposure. It's about contrast. That difference between light and shadow. And knowing how much control we can have over it. Holding shots I like that you brought up this being important especially in documentary-style shooting. One of my first jobs was as an assistant editor on a reality TV show. Watching back footage, this was one of the most important things I learned. Holding shots to let the action happen in front of the camera.

Film in the shadow area and film the wide shots first and after the detail shots with the same lighting setup are top tips for anyone starting now. Ah,the white walls... Easy solution for me if I can't avoid them is 2 X Neewer 660 RGB Tiel and magenta cast on the wall. Overused yes but still better than a white wall. Excellent informations inside this video apart from the sponsorship (which pay the bills is understandable)
