This guy is a really good interviewer. Asks the right questions, gives space for good answers and still adds some humour where needed. Drake did well with it too. We need more interview shows like this.
My dad is 50 years old and came to me and said this kid reminds me of tupac and he showed me a live performance of Kendrick and my father is a big old school rap rnb fan
People need to understand that Drake is a Relational Artist, Kendrick is more of an Observational Artist, somewhat like J Cole. This is why they're different and both have specific fan bases. In addition, some people that understand music and dissect rap and hip hop more then others would understand this.
Kendrick is way more relatable imo. Drake’s brand of introspection when he raps has felt more and more forced as he’s gotten bigger. You can tell he’s just too prideful to let his guard down. Be honest, can Drake make something as vulnerable as Kush & Corinthians or u or FEAR.?
@@spaceepandaaLool bro I’m the biggest kdot fan ever but now everyone is hating on drake just because everyone is hating on drake people quite literally follow what everyone says with no research nothing. People honestly believe this man grew up rich #1 he didn’t he actually grew up in a low income apartment on Jane n Westin and If you visited Toronto before you know it’s only a couple blocks away from Jane n Finch n it’s Weston the 2 places ppl tell you to stay away from it’s not a great neighborhood and has crime. His mom was a teacher who gotten sick and couldn’t work so drake got into acting and the only reason he even got the acting job was a kid from his school who told his dad this kid makes me laugh and drake auditioned. His dad wasn’t around at all. The MTV crib everyone saw was when he basically left degrassi or was on the last season and that time he was making 40k a year. People need to understand back then you could buy a nice 2-3 bedroom house for way less than what 1 bedroom apartments are going for right now. 30- 40k was considered stable why do you think so many of our parents got houses with normal ass jobs because how cheap it was. They also used disability because he’s mom was sick like on her bed sick. So their rent was around 300-600 a month. The notion he was rich came from him being from degrassi and eveyone just assuming he was rich of that show. Man do people not know what kids tv shows are especially one from Canada !😂 man wasn’t rich at all. His first couple seasons he wasn’t getting much at all until the last couple that’s when he started to get around 40k a year without taxes. Another notion is this ghost writing shit that everyone just says now cause the next person did with no research at all. Quentin miller was never a ghost writer he was credited the whole time. People heard his rap and found out what a reference track was for the 1st time and they still don’t understand it. Search up drake reference tracks those are him sending tracks he did for others and giving them ideas and concepts of how the song should go. Again Quetin did 3 hooks drake write his own verse and bars you could hear the difference and it wasn’t like copy and paste. And now people assume every song now it’s just ghost writing like bro they know it’s not they just say it because everyone is saying it. Like I had to do research because I don’t like just saying shit without knowing the full story. Kendrick has quite literally said he always in the studio with the peoples he works because he wants to see only work with people who are authentic and do their work and see how they work. Kendrick himself said he’s been in the studio with drake a couple times and the way he wrote was amazing and he was inspired by him because drake is so much of a perfectionist. The man literally wrote in front of him and people saying ghost writers. He’s literally written for Kanye multiple times, lil Wayne, Alecia keys, Baka not nice, Beyoncé , Rihanna , PND, Mary J blige, Jamie Fox, Rita Ora, Melanie Fox, bro literally wrote Alecia keys best song in Unthinkable and also her verse in Fireworks, bro was literally in a writers boot camp for Dr dre for months. Also Kanye himself said drake is one of the best writers he has ever seen and he wish all his writers had half of drakes talent because Kanye himself invited drake over for a weekend and drake wrote a couple songs him like facts , 30 hours , father stretch my hands and Kanye said he helped co-wrote on 2 other songs he didn’t release yet. Like drake ain’t having anyone write his actual rap verses or his best songs. Even the weekend stuff. Drake found the weekend when he was homeless I didn’t even know that man gave him his first check, first house, and showed him to the world before anyone knew him. I even searched it up and wanted to see the first few blogs who every posted about the weekend man Ovo website was posting about the weekend 9 months before anyone else multiple times and drake took him on tour put him on his album OvoXo became a huge thing . And then you hear the notion the weekend wrote take care. If people just do research they would see the weekend is featured on crew love and the ride. He co-wrote shot for me and then good ones go interlude is Abel’s voice in the background. It’s hilarious the ride is also another song where it’s just Abel’s voice in the background and drakes rapping over it. Theirs 23 songs on that album. The only song Abel said he had ready was crew love and that he couldn’t get a second verse so drake wrote his own rap verse. Shot for me the ride and good ones go drake wrote all of it he just needed Abel’s help with shot for me since it’s more his lane in the singing. So basically it’s one hook! One hook! That he wrote. Drake wrote his own rap on the ride but Abel’s featured in the background. Good ones go another song where Abel’s voice in background and drake rapping his own lyrics over it and drake still gave Abel credit. When Abel himself said crew love his verse was the only thing he even had ready when he went to the studio with drake. Which was only 2 days . Out of 23 songs. It’s insane how much the misconceptions can be.
I remember being in high school back then hearing clowns criticizing Drake about singing, arguing with them saying he was just a different beast he’s gonna change the game and here we are today 💯👑
Lol I typed in Kendrick's control verse and I saw this came up. And who just happens to be hating? Drake!! No response song or anything. Jus drake hating in an interview on the control verse. Good thing he didn't tweet all that negative emotion. Lol
I love drake . Hes basically saying that instead of getting hype on tracks and calling ppl out like kendrick lamar did . Just make a HOT track ! You dont have to say ppl names and air ppl out like that to prove your the best , ofcourse thats gonna attract attention, only for a moment thou . The main idea is to make incredible musiq without always having to discredit someone else to achieve that
Yeah instead he jumps on hot artists tracks to keep himself relevant. Like migos and YG for example. He's done a good job of it and he's relevant from his own songs too but let's not act like he doesn't do shit to stay hot
leo037m yo WHAT RAPPER DOESNT DO THAT SAME SHIT? u just said pretty much what every single rapper does these days its the way business works in music. quit actin like that takes away credit. doin a feature doesnt make shit better, it just gets ur music out to more ears.
You clearly don't know how west coast rappers are, do you?????? Especially in the 1990s they called you out if there was any problems, if you are seen as a threat!!!!!! No sneak dissing like Drake bitch ass does!!! 😕 Hiphop is a sport and started out that way! Drake don't understand the origins of it, Kendrick does!!
Kendrick Lamar ep, overly dedicated, section 80, GKMC. CONSISTENCY while drake got signed to young money and got quick exposure for all his releases, Kendrick was part of a growing label like TDE
I'm a fan of Kendrick Lamar but let's not be blind fans, he's talking about album releases not mixtapes. Kendrick only has one album Drake has three, does Kendrick have consistency I personally think he does because the mixtapes you mentioned are better than some rappers albums but we will see if he really has the juice with his next major release. Look at the other rappers who had great first albums that everyone branded a classic but never followed up with the goods. AND a large part of Kendrick's following don't know him past Good Kid so like I said lets not be blind fans
***** Ok lets call it a day and call it an album but Kendrick still has a lot to prove, if his next release doesn't deliver the same people who are acting like he is the saviour of rap will be shitting on him. There are people as we speak calling 'i' wack which I think is crazy I absolutely love that song but people are fickle. Build you up to break you down and he hasn't built an unbreakable career yet in my opinion he's in the process of building one.
i love kendrick and how he made hiphop feel real for a moment but i also feel like theres a lot of band-wagon fans right now. i just hope he stays consistent
Drake's fans might not know it because a good chunk of his fans aren't really deep into hip hop they only really listen to big name rap artist and have their main focus on other genres. Hip-hop heads definitely know Kendrick's verse though.
working on music and. Put out I and blacker the berry which murder every single doing drake ever came out with since drake never put out an album .let alone a song more thought provoking than blacker the berry
And here we are 10 years later lmao. Kendrick still using Drakes name to give himself some kind of relevancy. Nobody cares about his stuff unless Drake is involved
I'm deffinately a Drake fan but little did he know about the Masterpiece that would become To Pimp A butterfly and the Grammys, Legendary performances...little did he know man...Kendrick the most talented but Drake really is a super talent of our generation no denying that
agree.! I just wish their beef escalated😣 Kendrick would've definitely brought out the best Drake could do LYRICALLY😲💯 and I think Drake would've brought out the best in Kendrick as well💪
+hogyij bob Well that is the Truth right there! and I stick by the rules of traditional Hip-hop, if you have a ghost writer you're disqualified.. PERIOD!💯 You cant be saying your the best if you had or have people writing your shit in HIP-HOP!!
Best Interview ever! The fact that you can't remember a lot of these artist intros yet alone bars makes it stick that they are not all they claim to be... drake is that artist... He will be around forever!
lol you could apply that logic to so many great songs. The shining moment of that verse wasn't the start, so obviously it's not something that people just remember
drakes one of the few rappers worthy of respect I was in college and I was listening to new types of music.... Id totally outgrown rap and hip hop... I heard that track called Trust Issues on youtube and was blown away... This dude was singing and rapping so effortlessly and it sounded so relatable and now to me Big ups to Drizzy.... I hope when Im 35 and have a wife and kids I can put on a drake cd and still feel that same way man... Shout out from Australia
Drake's new album is my favourite by far. He's really improved since his first album and it's always a pleasure to hear his new shit and just sit back and listen to Nothing Was The Same and just appreciate
Doing It Wrong and Marvins Room are two of my favorite songs. Holy shit, never change please. CONNECT IS PERFECT HOLY SHIT. Eyes closed just swangin, same city, same friends if ya lookin, same city, same friends if ya lookin, I'll be here just swangin.
and kendrick made hiphop feel like real hiphop again. i dont wanna see rappers killin each other or nothin but wtf it needs more rappers like kenrick wakin the whole industry up
7:34 the way he said “I know that guy” really shows how he’s in tune with his critics and more than likely him and his boys just laugh at that shit lol
Delancy Leek Zane Lowe interview. He expound on an array of topics. Back to Back, Pop Style. Rihanna & More. He really didn't hold back. Great interview.
3 years later Kendrick did show and prove better mc more meaningful songs nothing watered down no bars about bitches money ex's just music to uplift the people Respect to drake tho he makes good music
King Kirin let me break it down in dumb-nigga terms: what qualifies/ disqualifies art as being "meaningful"? it's a subjective few point, considering it is the audience's job to find "meaning", if it's not meaningful to you, move the fuck on
I get striving for Kanye's success on selling albums but I'm not sure how Drake is aspiring to be more better any other aspect of Kanye's career. He needs to be aspiring to be more like Jay Z or Eminem...those two are the pinnacle of rap careers/business etc. but Kanye is more like a punchline nowadays...
H Dawk um your an example of someone who has allowed media to distract you from the bigger picture. Contrary to popular belief,Kanye hands down has the most diverse and innovative album catalogue as asolo artist in hip hop of all time. He is one of raps only HIP HOP MUSIC ARRANGER. Meaning he orchestrates singers, songrwriters, rappers, and producers(while also possessing these same skills) to make hip hop musical collages every album, and has his hands in every aspect of hip hop music's SONICAL direction for the past 10 years. This is why it would make sense for him to chase the level of impact Kanye has on the game.
Drake is a great rapper. 2Pac was the greatest. Kanye and Hov are my favorite. When it comes to Kendrick vs. Drake it's an inevitable debate. My opinion I like Drake better melody wise and rapping but I base that off me seeing his background and know he's spitting the truth about his life. I also base it off that I've dealt with similar stories that Drake have dealt with in the past as well, so I connect to it more so that's why I feel he is the greatest rapper as of today in my mind because I can relate to him more. Kendrick Lamar is a great rapper and will go down to being one of the greatest...I just feel he will never surpass Drake when it's all said and done.
Drake more versatile, he really connects to women more than Kendrick and they will buy that shit. Make it go number one!!!! Drake has a whole bunch of female fans!!! They think he one of the greatest and love to throw his massive numbers, he has over other rappers. He out selling everybody except Eminem.
***** Sales don't mean shit. Just because Drake appeals to a wider audience than K.dot doesn't make him better than K.dot. In terms of RAPPING, Kendrick kills Drake by far, so does Cole, but in terms of being VERSATILE , this is where Drake is second to none. That's why he's my favorite rapper , he's a better artist than anybody right now and I can relate to him more.
i completely agree on what he said about kendrick, if its really like fuck everyone he should act like it. i bet if it woulda been the other way around and drake would of put out a verse like control and been cool with kendrick 5 days later everyone woulda been like "oh what a fake rapper drake is" and what not. thats why drake is brushing it off, not because he's scare of kendrick like a lot of you are implying, he just simply doesnt feel the need to because he doesnt feel that way about kendrick no malice behind it. kendrick is a good rapper, so is j. cole and wale but again if they woulda put out a control verse like that first they would not be shaking hands like its all good. just my opinion
But Kendrick wasn't dissing him. Drake is fake. Listen to the Angie Martinez interview. Drake was saying fuck Kendrick in other words, then to say this shit? He is butthurt
My point is if drake or j cole or wale would of said something like that on a verse like control then later be all like high five guys. Hey what's up. Everyone would of been like oh what a fake. But since is Kendrick and he's the under dog people are letting it slide. I'm letting it slide because I fucks with Kendrick. But it takes credibility from the verse. He's right it was just a moment in hip hop.
Valentine M Kendrick also said "I got love for you all" in the verse, and Kendrick stated Big Sean's name in the verse. It's Big Sean's song... remember?
Drake even praised Section.80 when Kendrick was on the Club Paradise tour with him and acts like good kid, m.A.A.d city was the only album he's ever released...
Drake is so real & mature. I thought this was gonna blow out of hand & they were just gonna hate each other all of a sudden but no. "I saw him at VMA's 5 days later & it was all love", like yes, thank you.
I don't care what anyone says. Kendrick Lamar is the hardest MC of this new generation of music, he will out do drake in rapping in a heart beat. GOOD KID MAAD CITY is a classic, he really RAPS, something many rappers don't do, he talks about some real shit. DRAKE is awesome he's 1 of my top ten rappers and his new album is amazing. For the record my favorite rapper is 1.EMINEM 2. BIGGIE SMALLS aka Nutorious BIG, 3.KANYE, 4. Dr.dre,5. ice cube. That's my top 5 list on all time best
you got a pretty good top five man. Eminem is def one of the best. Kanye is maybe the best rap ARTIST a dang genius, but at least but pac up there insted of Dr. dre lol.
Your perception of music is gay as fuck man, an artist is someone that expresses, express inner complexion feelings experiences and just create shit projecting and manifesting inner being and genuine perception feelings n thoughts in a mechanical form of sound energy. Chill with that americas best rapper shit foreal you cant be the best at expressing your genuine perception of life. Think that shits funny idk that's chill kendricks your favorite artist, thers so much music in the underground man should dig deeper than that I really don't fuck wit the main stream but that's chill u prolly like the classics so u shud look up Big L freestyles, jedi mind tricks some classic shit, digginn in the crate fools, devin the dude if your blowin trees, brotha lynch, andre nickatinas shit is classic , typical cats graffiti shit I don't listen to that list much anymore just thought id name some artists you probablly never heard considering that list u got. Look up my homie froe fudge on yt shits fire real underground hiphop shit ,There so much music out there don't restrict yourself and enjoy that shit its not a sport no disrespect.
Im a drake fan but he contradicted himself when he talked about the kendrick verse saying it was all love. if you go to his interview with Angie he says that he dapped him up five days later like it was all cool and he was like nah man i dont fucks with that
EVERYTHING DRAKE SAID HERE 11 YEARS AGO IT DIDN’T AGE WELL CAUSE HE CHANGED FOR THE WORSE. AND BEFORE ANYBODY BRINGS UP THIS HATE SHIT ON MY COMMENT LET ME TELL Y’ALL SOMETHING, I USED TO BE A HUGE DRAKE FAN SINCE 2009 AND THE LOVE AND RESPECT I HAD FOR DRAKE’S MUSIC LASTED FOR 6 YEARS. WHEN I COME BACK TO THESE OLD VIDEOS THEN SEEING HIM NOW IT MADE ME LOSE A LOT OF RESPECT ON HIM. HAD HE STAYED TRUE TO HIMSELF MATURE WELL PEOPLE WOULD GIVE HIM THE RESPECT BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW, WITH ACTING CHILDISH, FAKE GANGSTA ANTICS AND POSTING QUESTIONABLE POSES ON SOCIAL MEDIA, STEALING FROM OTHER CULTURES AND NOT BEING ORIGINAL IS WHAT MADE NO LONGER FOLLOW DRAKE NO MORE.
Whats crazy is that none of this aged well... Kendricks Control verse is still one of the best of the last decade, we all know how it starts "TELL FLEX TO DROP A BOMB ON THIS SHIT!!" and he ended up being pretty damn consistent with TPAB and a solid DAMN... lol
@Jared Hutchins That's his Toronto accent, there's videos of him talking like that with his boys in like 2007. He's not "trying" to sound like anything
People claim drake is just a rich boy from canada because he lived in a nice neighberhood but heres the thing. 1.HE WAS LIVING IN SOME ONE BASEMENT IN THAT 'RICH NEIGHBERHOOD' 2.MOST OF HIS LIFE HIS LIFE HIS MOTHER WAS IN DEEP DEBT TO PAY FOR THE NICE THINGS HE HAD. 3.HE DID NOT ORIGANALLY LIVE IN THAT NICE NEIGHBERHOOD HE IT WASN'T THE HOOD BUT IT SURE AS HELL WASN'T THE SUBURBS. KNOW YOUR SHIT BEFORE YOU LET SOME FLY OUT YOUR MOUTH.
Stop! Drake grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth foh. You listed some problems lol everyone has em. Stop trying to make it seem like drake mightily struggled.
emily clarck Drake grew up in forest hill canada that is majority upper middle class jews. Hes mom was in debt because she was paying for Drake to go to acting school lol.
kushdaddy144 thank you! Lol drake had rich friends, and ect. . he had problems just like everyone on the planet, but dude wasn't poor, and wasn't necessarily struggling/starting from the bottom
+Devin Fore why you guys talking like yall personally knew him or what he been through in his life ? just cause you might of grew up rich doesent mean he didn't start from the bottom. I read that he was poor and the only income he had was coming from the TV show degrassi.
bullshit, he asked that question and theres a room full of women, EVERYONE knows how the control verse starts "Tell Flex to drop a bomb on this shit" - Of course if you ask that to a room full of women, they don't know. Which proves the point, drakes core fans wear high heels.
He is making the point, that people were going crazy about the verse and saying it's one of the best verses ever when hardly anyone can remember the first line. If it was that incredible, why doesn't everyone know it.
Numbers lie a lot. You've heard of artists buying their own shit, right? Not only that, but numbers only decide what is popular, not what is actually good. Yes, some really good shit is popular, but not all popular shit is really good.
Drake sonned Elliott so hard throughout this interview. But the best moment 21:50. For real. The way they prop up Kendrick's forgettable music and verses is legendary. "Verse of the Millennium" DEAD
Finally! Someone of importance, has said it. There was no malice behind that verse! He starts off talking about how he is friends with everyone he calls out. They're all hot right now and this is HipHop. What's rap without a little competition? I'm looking forward to K. Dot's next album as well i've been a fan of both since before the peak of fame. Drake did a great job answering this question.
Drake cried and bitched in a radio interview saying he'd never work with him again. He knows he shouldn't reply to K.Dot, that proves he's not the top dog.
I respect the fact ,that he just does it,instead of talking alot of shit.He lets the people do the talking.I am the same way ,i let my work do the talking for me.
I'm a fan of Drake, but I lost a little respect for him here. The sentiment of the verse was to step your bars up. Not fuck everybody. And Drake cannot compete with Kendrick lyrically. Kendrick's first two albums have already surpassed Drake's body of work in terms of impact on the culture, progress in sound, blending genres, telling a story, broadening perspectives, and institutionalizing a little self-awareness and awareness of the world as a whole. Drake's making hits that you can bump at the club or when you're feeling yourself or when you're in your feelings and need that companionship. But in no way is he making as powerful a statement or rapping as well as Kendrick Lamar. I just sense a little patronizing tone in his voice here. Still, I am a fan of Drake and think he's a dope rapper. Just not fuckin with Kendrick.
Bruh it's competition Kendrick just drop a number 1 album and he was feeling himself and called out names drake feels like he is the best and he is proving it now drake change the game bruh Kendrick talented that's a fact but nobody is consistent like drake he is a artist that has never been seen before
+Carlos Wilkins Kendrick has changed the game as much as Drake has. Just because Drake sells more records or is more widely known does NOT mean he's had more impact on the culture. Kendrick is actually tackling issues within the culture. Drake is glorifying the parts of the culture that are the reason that people don't respect contemporary hip-hop. Again, they're both dope artists and I understand they're coming from different angles, but my opinion is that Kendrick is a much superior rapper. And I think their respective projects support that opinion.
