Back in June 1980 in a night club I heard this song play and I happened to see this gorgeous lady on the other side of the dance floor. I plucked up the courage and asked her to dance and to my disbelief she said yes. It was the most magical moment in my life to even think this lady would dance with me. Almost 42 years later and I still pinch myself every morning when I wake to realise this class act has stuck with me all these years.
Don Mclean is so underrated. One of the greatest lyrics writers of all time. Vincent and American Pie are both masterpieces. And his voice is so pure even Roy Orbison preferred this version.
Roy Orbison was only being polite. Never in a million lifetimes is Don McLean in the same league as Orbison. That's not being disrespectful to Don, its just fact.
"Crying" originally written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson for Orbison's third studio album of the same name (1962). Released in 1961, it was a number 2 hit in the US for Orbison and was covered in 1978 by Don McLean, whose version went to number 1 in the UK in 1980.
Oh gosh... I mistakenly had it the other way around thinking Orbison covered it. Oops. A like both versions, but somehow am inclined to like Don's version better.
This might be strange, but I dedicate this song to my BF, Julian, he passed away in my arms this morning, and I haven't stop crying since. He was the Best thing that ever happened to me, Julian you loved me when you found me crying, licked away my tears, made me feel loved again, & though all the years we had together, short as they were, my tears came back, Jules, where are you to help kiss them away. I miss you so much, Jules, so does, the "Goose", he still howls for you. Always remember we LOVE YOU & Are still CRYING for you, Till we meet again, Run, Play, & be Pain Free, XXOO
Saw him the night before Thanksgiving at Carnegie Hall back in 1983. This was one of his encores that he did a cappella. Absolutely tore the house down

I'm a huge fan of Roy Orbison & I love all his songs . When I heard Don McLean version back in the 80's it suddenly hit me that this was the best version I've ever listened to. What a voice , what a singer 👏 😍 😳 👌
Hello 👋 Nicola How're you doing, it's been a long journey, and I'm nothing without amazing fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness, All love to you and yours ❤️
I saw Don McLean play in Rahway, NJ. Circa 1989. It's still one of my greatest concert memories. A total one man show. Just he and his guitar. He had the audience enthralled.
Don McLean sold millions and millions of records BUT for me was and is absolutely under-rated as a performer, singer and writer, not to mention his amazing 'folk' talents that we ignored after his huge success
How is he under-rated? He is regarded as one of the greatest American singer song writers of his era...his songs are considered standards. Many of his songs were played all over the radio dial for decades, and his music can be found in music books everywhere. American Pie is considered one of the greatest pop songs of all time, it sold an insane number of copies, and Vincent is widely acclaimed as well. He certainly is not under-rated. He is widely recognized and celebrated.
@@donkey3187 i think u summed it up more than adequately ...after 40 odd years there will always be a fading of memory as one musical generation gives way to the next and an ageing attrition rate.

What a sensational performance? Roy Orbison touched me much with his original. Don Mc Lean touches me more. This so deeply emotional that I never thought it was possible to sing Crying in this way. His version of Since I don't have you is also sensational. Songs like this and Vincent, And I love you so and Castles in the air will forever be in my heart. What an amazing musical artist. For me is he one the greatest musicians ever

I honestly think this is one of the best single performances of any great song. When you start watching it, withIn the first few seconds you just know 100% that he's going to totally nail it and its going to be special. That's a very rare feeling. God bless you Mr Maclean (and Mr Orbison too).
+John Hunter music to slash your wrist by lol..pretty song, but like all or most songs or remake songs of the 1960s were very depressing lost love songs or unrequited love
+John Hunter Your use of the word 'depressing' misses the point and sentiment of the song which is a beautiful lament. Not every song can be 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' or we'd all need sectionng under the Mental Health Act. Feel its emotional depth friend. Depressing?? No.
+danintn Sure. But what's wrong with that? Unrequited/lost love is an experience that almost everyone can identify with, so it connects emotionally - which is what a great song should do.
I remember in 1980 listening to this and thinking how much of a grown ups song it was. Forty two years later and i understand exactly what he was singing about.
I hadn’t heard Don’s version of this song, now my favourite ..His voice is beautiful, clear and his pronunciation is spot on..His range surprised me, in a good way..I am having a Don McLean listening feast day…❤❤ his songs bring back so many memories ..❤
Hello 👋 sarah How're you doing. Thanks for this comment, I'm nothing without fans like you who appreciate my musical craftiness It's nice meeting you here.
I saw Roy live at the Surf Nantasket in Scituate Mass. Thank you, Arnie Ginsburg of WMEX 1510 Boston. My Mom was a car hop at The Adventure Car Hop and Arnie's "Night Train Show" was the sponsor. Free tickets to my first sox hop ever at about 14 or so. I wanted to see Chris Jensen sing "Torture". I did and then the surprise Arnie had mentioned came on and started with "Only the Lonely". I knew the Voice but not the Roy Orbison name. He was A6 on the juke box at the Pioneer restaurant in Salem. I'm 75 now and Don Mclean nailed "Crying" before it was released to the Ten Ten of my youth. Had to learn to Love Sun Records as I got older. Some will understand that comment Don, some won't. Thanks for your Mastery of Music my friend! Amelasone @@donmclean8793
yes and one of my favorite songs by him is "And I Love you So" Of course I can't think of him without thinking of "Vincent" or "Starry Starry Night" (same song just listed in different ways). That's my all time favorite, but he has many songs to his credit.
Scotty, I feel your pain. It shows what a wonderful person you must be, and what special times you must have had with a very special lady. Be well, my friend.
Saw and heard him live 1.5 years ago in Copenhagen... He was just as good as when I saw him in concert in the 70's.... Forced my husband to go with me in 19, and he was MAD about him!!
@david Cantwell ooh, yeah! I'd all but forgotten about that song! Wow, that one really paints a detailed picture of the battleground. I'll have to dig out my album!!
It's pretty easy to say we all loved and lost, the relevance cuts into even thru the thickest of skins anyone one of us thinks we have very emotional song gets to the point of inspiration.
Okay. I've heard it by Roy Orbison and KD Lang, both are great. But this version by Don is by far my favorite. It is outstanding. It's the one that really gets to me
Shona Harris "every single song now sucks. There is not a single good musician. I haven't looked that hard though. I just know that no one has any talent anymore"
40 years ago when this man was at the height of his fame [following American Pie].. there were few in the music world, indeed if ANY.. who could match him. This, as much of his work in period.. is simply magnificent.
When my daughter was a little girl I used to play this song for her. We loved each other so much. She passed away a couple of weeks ago. I miss her sooo much. I will alway love her so.
I hope time is helping The hurt never goes away completely you find a way of living with it Now with this awful virus Please take care The sun will shine again rain clouds disappear then you will truly know your daughters always near to you from me Jenny xx
K D Land has a wonderful emotional rendition of Crying .... It is the most powerful I have ever heard .... They are all different ... each has something good to take from
He's one of the few who can sing this song well. He knocks it out of the park at the end. He's wonderfully talented. I think Roy would give him the nod.
perfectly said , intelligence music, for "the Few" that understand real feelings and aint afraid to show them , Don profoundly changed my life, got to know him in the earlier part of my life while travelling thru Canada RussellBradford Banks in Roswell New Mexico, retired cowboy/ range detective
Yes, a real chill factor song. Have you tried to sing it? Try it! It is very difficult to perform. The range it requires is huge. Roy did it first, wonderfully. Don has interpreted this song in his own unique way and made it his own. As a reward, he should take a sip of the orange juice. He earned it!

Don is an unprecedented American poet. His writing is awesome and his performances never leave your memory. Saw him on the old Howard Stern show when he finished "Vincent" and told everyone to go back to their computers. He is a Real Man. No quiche in his life. Some people will know what I'm saying. Move on, Don.

Keep coming back from time to time. I am also crying, cryin, cryin, lamenting how live singers today hide behind lip-syncs and woo the fans by reduce the cloth on their body.
they've been lip syncing since the 60s - watch the old filmed shows/appearances - playing music without the guitars jacked to amps - and where's all the background music coming from??
All others may be great but this is the way it was meant to be.. I still tear up listening and even more watching him performing it. One of my forever favorites!!! Love Don McLean !!

Great song! First sung and performed by Roy Orbison and now Don Mclean does a fabulous rendition of the song. Thanks for posting this one. Enjoying it very much!
Wow... haven't heard this since I was little...what a ton of memories washed over me hearing this! I love how a song can take you to a special moment in time and it's like you're there again!
