One thing I really love from this backstory is how Chopper receives the best of both worlds from his mentors: one gives him the heart to care for others, while the other gives the actual medical skills and knowledge. Hiriluk was a nice and compassionate person but insanely terrible as a doctor, while Kureha is an amazing doctor but didn't really care about other people. I like how it shows both Hiriluk and Kureha as equally incomplete as doctors, highlighting Chopper as the perfect combination of both: a caring little guy with excellent medical skills.

Also worth pointing out: Chopper's human form is OMEGA BUFF compared to his true reindeer form (and for these purposes we're going to ignore his hybrid form because it in no way obeys the paradigms observed in literally every other zoan fruit user, Chopper breaks the rules for mascot appeal reasons), which implies that the zoan fruits don't just grant their user a form of "an animal" but of "the ideal animal". Chopper's human form is large and strong enough to be considered a monster by ordinary people, without any particular training or experience. Also worth pointing out is that Chopper didn't appear to know any language when he first was shot at by people, and by the time Hiruluk spoke with him in his home, he had perfect command of the human language, implying that his brain is actually EXTREMELY adept at taking in and sorting information, which also helps explain why he's such an accomplished doctor at 15. This is another potential example of his human fruit granting an ideal form, taking the advantage of human communication and cognizance and ramping it up to 11.

@@gregligue4974Ghandi was only enlightened by colonial powers perspective. Because what he preached is good, but is not reasonable to save your people from oppression and eradication. Ghandi's perspective didn’t save his people. You'd be surprised how often opprrssed nations are willing to compromise even if they end up with less of their own land. And compromise peacefully. And always they are betrayed. Think about it. If a group of people believe they can just invade a land and steal its resources and kill the people there, why would they agree to let some of that possible wealth go? They will only stop when it's in their interest to, and that will only happen when they lose wealth/power. In other words, violent resistance. Peaceful resistance will be shut down after a point

Explanation of the name "Tony Tony Chopper," which is not easy to pick up without some knowledge of Japanese. (And the sub doesn't clarify it that much.) Dr. Hiruluk said, your name is Tony Tony Chopper because you're a reindeer with antlers that can chop trees. In Japanese, Reindeer translates to, "tonakai". "Tonakai" then shortened to "Tony", then "Chopper" because his antlers can chop trees. So he's "Tonakai Tonakai Chopper (of trees)."

Especially considering that Pikachu is almost the only pokemon who's Japanese voice is retained as is and untouched through localizations. While 99% of other pokemon were re-dubbed locally - their voices changed because the pokemon names were changed when going outside Japan so they had to redub them to make them repeat their new localized names. For example, Bulbasaur doesn't originally say "bulbasaur, bulba, saur saur" or something like that, because originally it's not "Bulbasaur", it's Fushigidane. So he says that. It had to be done because most names are puns and wordplays which only the Japanese can understand and which would be lost in translation anyway. But Pikachu kept both his Japanese name and the iconic Japanese voice globally.

I always pictured Chopper’s backstory as the struggle between ideals/dreams and reality/practicality. Hiruluk had ideals but no actual skills to do anything and Doctorine had no dreams or aspirations and all the skills. Chopper’s “failure” with the mushroom is such a good metaphor. You need both to reach something incredible. I think Chopper’s backstory for me is one of the more simply profound in imagery similar to Sanji’s.

Hiruluk had a terminal sickness... You probably didn't gloss over it, but he only had days left. After the mushroom, it was down to 'half a day', but he knew that he had enough time to take care of the pressing issues. Also, 'reindeer' is 'tonakai' is japanese... that's why the extra 'Tony' :D

The voice actor for Pikachu is the same VA for Chopper. Her name is Ikue Ōtani. Best known for these two roles. If you watch Naruto she also voices Konohamaru Sarutobi who is the third hokage grandson.

Dr. Hiriluk has a heart of gold but is terrible at life skills and his profession as a doctor (he is in fact more of a scientist inventing all sorts of insane things). Dr. Kureha is awful at showing her emotions and treats people harshly but great at life skills and is a great doctor with actual medical knowledge. Together they created Chopper who is an amazing doctor and scientist with invention abilities and has a pure heart of gold! Indeed the best parents! I love how with most people in One Piece the parental figures/found family is amazing and usually better than most blood families, is really wholesome!

Dalton was a human who ate the Ox-Ox fruit: Model Bison. Dalton wasn't an ox to begin with. Chopper was a Reindeer who ate the Human-Human fruit. Also, Oda has been asked that question in SBS part where he answers fans questions. If you want to know more about the OP world the SBS is great for extra cannon info that isn't in the manga/anime.

Haha everyone makes the same mistake. Hiriluk's clothes were hanging from a conveniently placed sapling, not off of his junk. You can see the sapling sticking out from the side a bit.
