Hayden S funnily enough you can basically perform a step-dodge or whatever in Outlast by perfectly timing a jump to get away from an enemy. I’ve done it before and it certainly ain’t easy but rewarding since you avoid getting hit.

The killer can only catch up to you in that way, if you are looking at him normally, but that can't happen however if you're looking behind you while running. Also, when you're running and looking behind you, your point of view will not be placed in that normal camera angle, it will appear a bit tilted. If you've played the game obsessively like I did, you can just tell when someone is actually utilizing that running feature or not.
