Crypt Sermon "The Stygian Rose" Review (THIS MIGHT BE THE BEST DOOM METAL ALBUM OF 2024 SO FAR...) 

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We really appreciate that! I'd be lying if I didn't say this already carved out a spot on my year end list as well. This album is flat out amazing and might have even surpassed their last one which was a year ender for me as well.

Necrotic Nick- I mean the name caught my when I first saw their debut at my local record store so I hear you, man.

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Honestly, if you love their previous stuff you'll dig it but I legit feel this could be their best album yet and I raved anytime someone brought up their last one. I'm about to do the same with this one.

Necrotic Nick- I might have to listen to more Savage in the future then.

@@thrallsofmetal Musically they’re very different, but his vocals are absurdly similar. Sirens and Hall of The Mountain King are both especially killer albums.

Necrotic Nick- I've never really listened to much Savatage but I've been hearing a lot of comparisons in in the comments so it might be to check them out more thoroughly.

Stygian means darkness. Iced earth has a song called Travel in Stygian

Necrotic Nick- As big as a fan as I am of the last one I think they might have surpassed that one with this beast.

Necrotic Nick- Man, honestly that might be my favorite track on the album lol. The dynamics between the dirge/ ballady verses and that huge, catchy but kinda menacing chorus gave me legit goosebumps. I loved the whole thing though. The other big standouts for me were Thunder being just a big, slow, doomy rocker and the title track just closing the album in the most epic way they can. This might be their best work yet here and I was pretty nuts about The Ruins of Fading Light. This already has a holding spot on my year end list for sure.

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I picked up Out of the Garden on a whim or possibly because I saw the comparisons to bands I already liked but that debut was killer but when The Ruins of Fading Light dropped that one made me a legit fan. This new one might be their best offer yet though. Everything feels bigger, darker and more epic on here and I absolutely love it.

Necrotic Nick- I think I've heard of them but I've never jammed their music. I'll have to look into them at some point.

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, Rizk rarely misses on the production. I'm not much of a Savatage fan but I might have to check out more of their stuff if it's comparable to this because this flat out rules.

Necrotic Nick- Hey! Thanks for checking out the review! Yeah, stuff that sounds like Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Trouble. That blend of doom and big, classic heavy metal harmonies and vocals scratches a very particular itch for me. This really avoids the cheese by staying dark, sinister and heavy as hell throughout the album. That layer of grit on the album keeps it pretty raw too.

Necrotic Nick- I was legit giddy when they announced they were working on a new album. Honestly, this might be their best album yet and I love that Brooks added some more grit to his vocals. I'll have to check out Officium Triste as you're definitely dropping the right names in terms of comparisons here lol.

Necrotic Nick- That last one was a year ender for me and I think this one might be even better.

Necrotic Nick- I held off on ordering just because anytime I'm on Dark Descent's site I always order more than I planned. That being said, it was a futile move because when I did order this after we filmed this I still ordered a bunch of other stuff lol. I've had more time with The Ruins of Fading Light but I've gotta say this hit harder right out of the gate. It just instantly got me so I'm leaning toward this one being a bit better. All their stuff is killer though.

Necrotic Nick- I'm already reserving a spot on my year end list for this one. It's so damn good. That nailed the epic doom sound but they also gave it more grit and darkness too. The guitar work is heavy as hell and this never feels cheesy. It's catchy as hell but it's still dark and somber throughout the entire listen.

Necrotic Nick- Yeah, this is yet another one that teeter close to the edge of a 5 and it may get there with more listens but honestly this album just flat out rules.

Yo bro, you like what you like. Sabaton not my cup of tea, but that doesn't make you a poseur. I have tons of guilty pleasures that would make most metal heads puke (closet jam band fan, sorry) but I have also been listening to all forms of metal since I discovered Twisted Sister, and a cousin first played the Motley Crue- shout at the devil album. Having eclectic taste and being open to being moved by all styles of music does not make you a poseur. And Depeche Mode is fucking awesome. Ultra is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Necrotic Nick- I really enjoyed that one but I think they got out "Stygian-ed" with this bad boy.

Necrotic Nick- Agreed. They flat out nailed it on this one. I'm not sure if this is that comparable to the new Pallbearer. Granted they're both doom metal bands but they really take vastly different roads with the style. In terms of epic doom this album crushes and, for me, might even be better than The Ruins of Fading Light which was a year ender for me.

@@thrallsofmetal In terms of both styles of Doom, yea they're obviously different but under the umbrella of just Doom in general? I'm still giving the nod to Pallbearer in my humble opinion. The Stygian Rose may end up being better than Ruins down the road but as of now I still favor Ruins as I've had way more time to digest that one. It's still a fantastic piece of art though. If you guys are in the mood for some melancholic death/doom in the vain of Swallow The Sun or Draconian, I recommend a band called Evercloud and their debut From Light To Eternity which came out a couple of weeks ago. They're more reminiscent of Draconian in the sense that they are female fronted when it comes tot he cleans but the harsh vocals kinda remind me of Mikael Akerfeldt a bit. It's extremely depressing, dark, somber and just moody stuff lol.

Necrotic Nick- Shred started a new job so we're figuring out a new schedule for him to record and Miller just got back form a couple of long trip and is back to work but we're gonna get him back as well. Rin's been working a lot as well too. It's kinda tough to get everyone together with overlapping schedules.
