I love bromeliads especially Cryptanthus, or earth stars. The common name of earth star is applied to the genus because of the starlike shape and earth hugging tendency. The genus varies in size from three inches tall to over three feet tall, and foliage ranges from greens to reds and pinks with zones or stripes of silvery colors. With origins in the rain forests of Brazil, you will guess that Cryptanthuses are tropical plants and grow in temperatures comfortable to humans. Over 1,200 different varieties have been identified. With so many to choose from, almost everyone can find one in a color and size of their liking.
