Crypto Crash Explained: How Crypto Repeated Wall Street’s Mistakes. With Münecat | The Class Room

Everyone is panicking about cryptocurrency.
We’re going to unpack what’s happening for you, by looking at the fallout of a different market crash.
So let’s go back to January 2009.
President Obama had just been inaugurated and the whole world was reeling from the 2008 financial crisis.
And the banks, which caused all this, were only saved by a taxpayer funded government bailout.
That same month, the very first block of bitcoin was released by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, with this cryptic message in the code:
The Times January 03 / 2009 / chancellor on brink of second bailout.
A clear sign: cryptocurrency was created, at least in part, as a reaction to the financial crisis and bailouts.
At the time progressives and crypto folks seemed to agree:
Traditional financial institutions created a corrupt system that benefited a small set of wealthy elites and excluded the rest of society.
But they split in how they responded:
Meanwhile: cryptocurrency advocates believe the solution is less government, and less regulation, so they simply built a parallel financial industry.
And they did it all while promising working class investors super charged returns in a fairer, more equitable financial system where anyone could get ahead.

Six months later and FTX has crashed, pulling others down with it, and it feels like 2008 all over again. About that Matt Damon ad; I remember it from 2021 and after he says, "Fortune favors the bold". I always replied, "...and crypto favors the gullible."

I’m OK, in fact I am in favor of private currency, but it Has to be backed by something and it Has to be stable and fungible, And by stable I mean resistant to inflation and deflation. I think that is ideal and I think it can be done, but not with these fake cryptocurrency’s that are not backed by anything. The idea of the gold standard, it’s not so quaint. I trust Walmart dollars Way more than any of this crypto shit. Never owned crypto, probably never will, some of my friends made a lot of money on it. Maybe I’m the dummy, but, for sure, this is not the answer to Fiat currency. Both are bad

"we're all gonna ride the market to the top". If that's what you believe, then you don't know what a market is. Its all a closed loop, the only reason it goes up is cause people want to buy into it, and it goes down when they don't. The only way to make money is to hope that some sucker will buy it from you, just before it crashes. and thats just their bad luck. always a winner and always a loser.

Yep, From the few people i know in the crypto universe a few bought Bitcoin back and struck gold. They never mention it. Sadly the majority are those who bought crypto far too late for too high a price with money they couldn't afford to begin with. These are the ones shouting exotic terms every bloody day : 'Bearish, Bullish, diamond hands ..etc, etc. While all i see is people who lost a lot of money.

It's sometimes referred to as "a greater fool" theory. (If you were foolish enough to buy a pig in a poke, then surely a greater fool will buy it from you at a higher price.) Note: no goods are produced. When people use a high proportion of electrical grid output to "mine crypto," what are they ACTUALLY PRODUCING, beside carbon dioxide? Distributive computing for black hat hackers? Brute force attacks? Access to the miner's personal data, contacts, etc.? Pyramid schemes like this have been going on for centuries. Look up "Tulip Mania" for an example.

It's a small correction but Elon Musk was not the founder of Paypal (or even Tesla for that matter), he joined in later. He was part of the "paypal mafia" and that's why he is known. But he wasn't the founder of neither paypal or tesla which people often don't know.

Musk is a old money trust fund baby trying to pretend to be new money. ================= Is crypto like the gold standard? Like there is only a set amount in the vault (except for mining but that takes time to find and can't just be created on demand). So if there's a set amount of waelth/gold/crypto (more or less) then it ends up like a monopoly game - someone ends up with all the money at the end. Where as the current system, new money is created all the time whenever someone gets a mortgage. The reserve bank can then regulate the amount of new money being printed by raising/lowering interest rates. I would rather trust a democratic elected government than a non elected cooporation any day. Improve the system rather than annihilating it.

I kind of lost interest in munecat when she started this "we need more regulation around banking bs". All the regulators are from financial backgrounds. She's basically defending the banking status quo, a very right-wing position. There are problems with crypto obviously but to pretend like its all bad when its liberating millions of people from the hellish poverty of zero-access to financial services is just reactionary bs.

5:40 If you like Cyberpunk 2077 and want to live in that world, take your advise from Elon. If you don't like corporations, then you shouldn't like government, doesn't convince me to put my money into an unregulated corpo fund instead of a federally protected trust. (I think that's why they are called trusts. Because you can trust them not to f&ck you when you come collecting per the terms of the arrangement.) Once again, I'm awful suspicions of Elon's pro crypto "philosophy." Is it a philosophy, or a veiled sales pitch to get you to put your money in the scam pot? It's also a convenient coincidence that BitCoin came out around the time of the Madof conviction. It's almost like someone heard about his scheme and said, let's do that on the internet where I can stay anonymous and not suffer Bernie's fate. Frame it as protection from people like Bernie. This guy screwed you using the system with regulations and oversite, so put your money into what I'm telling you is a better option even though it has less security and no enforceable oversight. The main reason crypto is illiquid is because with very few exceptions, the only things you can buy with it are illegal goods/services, and well, other crypto. It's kind of hard to make it look like anything is happening if your just pushing water from one side of the pool to the other. It's the same pool of the same water. You've just spent calories pushing it around. And that's mostly because it is unregulated and has no assurances. "But the block chain is public. You can't get ripped off or everyone will see it." And that's it. You'll get ripped off, and everyone will see it. You're not getting it back, and you've no one to turn to to try and recover your losses because it's not insured or protected the way real currency is. But, at least everyone will know you were scammed. (Identifying you as a likely target.) I'm sure that will have a huge positive affect on the ego. They might as well be trading candy wrappers and calling it cash. We've also seen some major players back away from crypto. Microsoft no longer accepts cryto. I believe you can not buy one of ELON MUSK'S TESLAs with cryto anymore. The king of cryto, doesn't accept crypto. That tells you everything you need to know and as a indicator of this is going to end. I'm not a financial expert in any way and am not qualified to give financial advice. That being said, I highly advise anyone who's household income is under 150K a year, get your money out of crypto before it's too late. I can't tell you where to put it, stocks, bonds, pillow, bible, where ever. I just know that if you leave it in crypto, it's not going to be there one day. And unlike the Madof situation, no one will ever see any of it again. At least some people got something back from Bernie. For the record, I am pro technology. Which is the exact reason why I refuse to give Big Crypto the opportunity to prove my suspicions to me. I would be more comfortable if we got rid of congress and truly make the US for the people by the people, instead of for the elected put into power by the people, before I would put my money to "the blockchain". But supposedly the tech to ensure security and accuracy of an election doesn't exist, but we're fine with trusting our money to some unclaimed internet code. (Did I mention I sell bridges? I'll even take crypto since there's not much else you can spend it on.) The fact that there is no known author is shady AF. The only reason to not claim the fame for creating such a revolutionary tech, is if you intend to stay hidden for when the tech finishes it's job. I'd like to believe that maybe there was a or hand full of altruistic person(s) who developed this for the good of all man kind, with nothing to gain but the rewards of virtue itself. Based on the political framing of it's conception, inception and implementation, we know that it was created with an agenda. What exactly that agenda is remains to be seen. I am highly suspicious that If someone doesn't want their name to be tied to that agenda, that the agenda is truly altruistic. You know those huge flags car dealerships have? That's the size of the red flag that crypto puts out. In case you're not familiar, that's a huge red flag. The size of some suburban yards big.

It's always fun to be reaffirmed of what the capitalist system really stands for. P2P technology, at it's start (original P2P technologies like Bittorrent), was deemed evil and the enemy of capitalism everywhere, because it was actually providing average people with valuable goods for free (or low cost if you count the tech needed to use it). But as soon as P2P (carrying crypto) is giving zero real value to the public, but just spilling millions/billions of dollars in wealth into the hands of extremely rich people? NOW it's a golden technology that deserves defense and should be a "staple" of a "burgeoning capitalist economy". Right... of course... I think we all get the picture more or less now. As soon as "institutional investors" got into the crypto game, everything went downhill. It is like they are actively trying to fuck regular folks over. These "market makers" are just a cabal of cynical greedy sociopaths at the helm of corporate/government power. We literally cannot distinguish between academia from corporate interest, media, nor government bodies. They are all intertwined in a web of revolving doors. A treasury secretary in the U.S can go to being a lobbyist, professor, "consultant", or paid media "contributor" for major "news" networks and back to government within a span of 15 years. They can traverse the multiverse of US hegemonic power. There are people who have been fundamental to shaping policy and narratives since the 70s, be it they fuck up monumentally but still retain their status or better yet get a cushier job.

It wasnt about bailing out just the banks, if they didnt do what they did in 08, the commercial paper market would have failed. Peoples paychecks across the country wouldnt be issued, as well as a whole host of other issues. It wasnt about just the banks themselves and their employees, if the investment banks were allowed to fail it would have caused a domino effect that would have knocked out many different markets, look how the automakers almost went under... the fact that we didnt throw anyone in jail or make sure it didnt happen again is the real crime.

Im glad to see content like this. Even though I am a proponent of cryptocurrency I'm one of the ones who constantly warns against letting something that was supposed to upend the traditional financial system become the next iteration of it...voices like mine are getting drowned out more and more in crypto...we were more plentiful back when i first discovered crypto in 2014 but as the space became more flush with cash those of us who saw it as financial activism got replaced by dudebros promising lambos and moon profits.....in my opinion we lose control when profit becomes the principal motivation...that's where the old banking system went wrong too Even though you guys don't have a positive opinion of the blockchain space i appreciate the valid points you bring up that may help the original purposes for this tech come to fruition

I’m with you. I even got a postgraduate diploma in the technology. And the current state of the industry is just a mess. Centralized power, shitcoins galore, the usage of the EVM to mint monkey pngs, and literally throttling it, the whole development of web3, rampant scams, the overfixation of the community to not be regulated accompanied with that rampant scams… It looks so bad, and every other crypto “bot” out there is just in negation, asking where lambo. And the other is just hoping he can sell his bag to get the next one Even “specialist” hop on that delusion. Like dude, you are just a guy that bought in 2012, you know jack shit about economy and decentralized systems lmao

I'm mostly curious what you view as the real goals: block chain is a new tech, so it might have some use. The way it has been largely used is consistently bad, but that doesn't mean there's nothing redeemable
@AtlasAssistant

@@leviangel97 to me the real goal is decentralization of finance. What libertarians or "crypto anarchists" fail to see is that capitalism needs to be abolished in order for any kind of anarchist society to work. You need the state to be around to enforce private property. If there wasn't a state and police most people would not even take part in the financial system.

It's just a ponzi scheme. Money all has to come from somewhere. If you made money in Bitcoin, someone else lost somewhere. Money doesn't come from nowhere.

@@TheTroutyness really doesn't make crypto less of a ponzi scheme. It uses the money of current investors to pay out past investors, and that has to end somewhere.
