If you think it’s sloppy, you’ve clearly never payed attention when listening to any of their albums. There’s an all out chaos to the sound that just works, and it sounds organic, especially on the first two albums. It’s insanity in music form

I guess no one here in the comments knows of Flo's jazz background. It's so obvious that he's taking a jazz approach to his playing and more importantly the live execution of the songs. To me it's the main reason why he's still an interesting drummer while other speed machine drummers aren't as talked about anymore.
@deanmayberry9713
@deanmayberry9713 5 лет назад
This. He's actually improvising a lot of those fills. He's played the song surely millions of times by now and I'm sure he has it memorized. I'm gonna truthfully state that the majority of extreme metal drummers are boring these days. They're robots. You want that? Program a drum machine and it's infallible -- it'll play the same thing every single time perfectly 100% of the time. Jazz and tech death metal (which was clearly highly influenced by jazz) was never about being perfect. I guess now it is, but the fills and improv particularly in a live setting when everyone knows the damn song is what makes drumming INTERESTING even to other drummers. I'm gonna think, "oh shit sick! He just pulled improv!" if I see a drummer do something different live. The singer is allowed to break up the song and shout, "1234" but the drummer can't have those liberties as long as he's still holding it down? That's a bit illogical. A recording where the band is on strict metronome practice and does the same song upwards of thousands of times to get the perfect take is very different. Hell, look at the godfather of prog drumming. The man has the most ridiculous kit ever and completely does improv live which people go crazy for. Flo is a good drummer that's busted his ass and devoted his life to playing the drums, recording, and touring (the world at that). The man can have some fucking fun because frankly he's earned it. Those perfectionist armchair theorists can't play this shit anyways. Constant double bass also gets goddamn boring. It lost the, "oh my God how does anyone do this" a long time ago. A straight 4 gets boring. How many drummers drop their 4 for a fill? A lot do. Extreme metal has brainwashed people to believe that the only way to keep time is via constant double bass which gets really goddamn uninteresting really fast.
@chaosinception7982
@chaosinception7982 3 года назад
He was absolutely never a jazz player. He got away with playing fast and sloppy back in the day. Drummers are more proficient now. He just needs to clean up his playing a technique. This is a classic song. And he is a cool guy.

People talking smack about Flo.Flo has always been somewhat inconsistent.If you listen to None So Vile you' ll probably hear about 4-5 different snare tones.Same goes with the kicks,it's not exactly a 16th note run always,but that is what's refreshing.He plays like an animal,and there were times that people used to appreciate such performances,for example every single work of Emperor,first albums of Dying Fetus,the list is endless.We 've reached an era where everyone is perfect,digitalized as fuck and the soul is squeezed out of the player in exchange to 100% on the grid tight performances.People don't play like that,most of them don't at least in a live situation so why bother ? We,as players and listeners have made perfect average.How to stand out amongst average perfection ? By being real and honest,just like Flo.

Now I haven’t seen any negative comments on this vid, but there’s no chance that there’s anything wrong with this mans drumming. The writing in cryptopsy and the notation for his fills are insane, not to mention all ghost notes this man pulls off. Allot better than any Chelsea grin, white chapel “ death ( soft ) core “ drummers out there, with their “ brutal “ break downs and what not. Allot more rhythm changes in cryptopsy not everyone can keep up with. This mans one of the greatest drummers alive and you’re just gonna have to live with that

i dont think he is that sloppy really, cryptopsy is organized chaos, it really is. This "sloppiness" is probably at least partically intentional. Listen to their records the drumming is all the place and wild. It fits the music perfectly.

Whilst yes, he is sloppy, I give it to him that he never slows down. Some old schoolers are slowing down songs that they played in their prime but flo is keeping it going like he did 25 years ago

To the people saying he's playing sloppy... go behind the kit and play 16th note triplets with your feet and place straight 8th notes with the hands. Oh is that hard? You never thought to do that? Flo has.... probably because he knows bands such as Rot, Squash Bowels, Dermoid Cyst, Gowl, Assuck, fucking Agathocles... do your homework.

(I'm totally necroposting here, but) most of those bands're grind / goregrind - subgenres whose ethos is "precision < speed" (and that's totally fine; it's part of the aesthetic & appeal of the subgenres) - and it proves his inaccuracy isn't a big deal. In other words: yeah, he's sloppy, but that's part of the schtick. I don't think he's _trying_ to be precise; speed's the name of the game, with a certain natural chaos or "organicness" to the mistimed strokes. But if we were to suppose he was trying for speed _and_ precision (like the kind of performative par in technical DM, progressive extreme metal; that kinda stuff), boilerplate musical "best practice" holds that one needs to learn to play a piece accurately at a lower tempo, then gradually ramp up the BPM until one can play it with the same accurately at the target higher speed. With the exception of songs that're *deliberately* composed or performed to be arrhythmic, mistimed, dissonant / atonal, or improvisational - things we see in some styles of fusion, jazz, blues, experimental, etc. - I think most music teachers & instrumentalists hold to a philosophy of "Speed is meaningless without precision; precision is meaningless without dynamic."

Man, that kit looks far to flimsy to take that kind of beating. I kept waiting for something to break, and though nothing broke I did see him adjusting snare spring tension in the middle of a blast beat. Inhuman! Respect to Flo. More respect for the drums for holding together

Donna Moffitt I saw Origin on the 16th and asked John for a stick. Since I recognized him he threw one directly too me. Scorpion Immortal 5bv. Epic night. I met (and got a hug haha fanboy moment) from Alan Cassidy of TBDM, and got a signed snare head that was dated and had the set list for Trey from Fetus. Love how down to earth death guys are.

People who call this 'sloppy' are the types who would also someone call someone like Shawn Lane or Allan Holdsworth sloppy for playing a line containing both quintuplets and sextuplets. Playing with rhythm is one of the most interesting things there is about music - you want everything to be quantized and locked in with constant 16th notes/32nd notes? Expand your musical vocabulary djent kids. Don't call it 'sloppy' unless you're 100% sure you know what Flo is intending to play.

I'm totally necroposting here, but the fact that his playing's sloppy isn't a big deal; it's part of the charm and general aesthetic of some types of grind, brutal DM, war metal, etc. But attributing his lack of precision to some deliberate, charted subdividing of notes doesn't just flip the bird to Occam's razor and common sense, it implies that _all_ poor playing (whether by amateurs or professional instrumentalists) isn't the performer's lack of accuracy, but some feat of technical genius. There's a _biiig_ difference between stylistic, purposeful off-time rhythm or notation (e.g. playing "behind" or "ahead" of the beat in some styles of fusion, jazz, blues, etc.) and simple lack of precision and accuracy. Like I said, his imprecise playing isn't a big deal and is part of the appeal, but if you're genuinely expecting any musician to buy the idea that objectively sloppy playing is somehow comparable to the likes of Lane's or Holdsworth's _actually_ intentional technicality, you're gonna be disappointed.
