Worth mentioning is that the key reason Charles Darwin was on the Beagle was as a companion to Capt Fitzroy. Being that ships captains of the time often maintained command by distancing themselves from the crew Capt Fitzroy desired some person on board he could confide in on the voyage, thus apart from his survey & science duties this was the reason Darwin was aboard

@Ray Turvey it is extremely easy to question whether the BBC meets Lord Reiths intellectual principles which did include entertain. However as someone who has lived abroad in various places I can confirm that British television including the BBC is vastly better in terms of the quality of its output, documentaries, science and nature and the likes of BBC 4, trust me.

You hit the nail on the head with your remark about the area being fog free. I went to school in the Crystal Palace area during the great smog of 1953 and it was amazing how the fog disappeared as the bus climbed up to Beulah Hill.

From what I've seen in other articles about the Crystal Palace they moved the structure by taking it apart then rebuilt it on the new site. The structure was only ever intended to be a temporary one for the exhibition, so it was designed and built to be taken apart and recycled. That made moving it easy.

Great video, as always Joolz! On the 30th November 1936, my parents watched The Crystal Palace burn down and later went back for a lump of melted glass to keep as a souvenir (err, after it had cooled down!). They had noticed the blaze from their homes in Forest Hill. They said it was a terrible conflagration and the heat was intense. Rather a sad ending for the great building, but it was getting in a bit of a ropey state by then anyway...

I used to play around Crystal Palace when I was a kid (in the 60's). Before they built houses on the track bed we were able to walk through the tunnel and at the far end there was/is a big block of flats. The underpass was still open then and it was used as an air raid shelter during WW 2. The dinosaurs were made of brick with a render on the outside and we used to hire a boat (rowing boats then) and get on to the islands they were standing on. The bigger ones had an opening in the belly part which allowed us to get inside.

The pattern of brickwork you mentioned is known as diaper, a term for repeating rhombic shapes. This later came to describe cotton or linen with the same pattern, hence how the Americans came to call nappies diapers. How's that for a jolly good Joolz type fact?

I always wanted to visit this park as a kid. Especially the dinosaur portion of the park. It was featured in a 1985 kids documentary entitled "Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs" with hosts Gary Owens and Eric Boardman. I went to London in the early 90s, but never got to go here, unfortunately. I'd have loved to see it then, because I've seen recent pictures and videos of the park, and it looks to be run down, and more of a shadow of its 1980s era. In the documentary, the dinosaurs were painted, and the gardens and waterways around them were greener and more abundant. Whereas now, it seems the water level is low, the plant life is all but dead, and the dinos are no longer painted. I hope this place is being restored. It would be ashamed to let it just rot away.
