CSF Rhinorrhea is the topic of our discussion today. It refers to the leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through the nose. CSF is a fluid that surrounds and protects the brain, providing nutrients and acting as a cushion against impacts. When a person experiences continuous water discharge from one nostril, especially with specific activities and a salty taste, it may indicate a CSF leak. While these leaks can occur spontaneously, they are more commonly associated with head injuries, such as accidents or falls, or even brain tumors.
If left untreated, CSF leaks can lead to serious complications like meningitis, where the infection spreads to the brain. Identifying a CSF leak involves assessing symptoms, collecting and drying fluid samples to differentiate from nasal secretions, and conducting imaging scans like MRI or CT scans. Treatment often involves endoscopic repair, a minimally invasive surgical procedure where a camera is inserted through the nose to locate and seal the leak. This procedure is typically carried out by a team consisting of ENT surgeons and neurosurgeons.
