Very nice to see Sam Elliott out there. I never met CSM Plumley but from what I read about him, Elliott seemed to be the man to portray him and did a marvelous job. What a tribute to an amazing human being.

An old friend of mine knew Hal Moore and CSM Plumley both, after seeing the movie he said Mel Gibson did a fine job of portraying Hal Moore, but that Sam Elliot WAS CSM Plumley. I can only take his word for it, but that's pretty good praise I think.

I was at the funeral with the Patriot Guard. I served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. As we stood in the flag line outside the church there were two Soldiers wearing the Congressional Medal of Honor that walked by and thanked us for our service. I felt so honored that these men would say something like this to us.

I met some Marines from Nam, although I wish for their sakes I didn't have to. At time I was an Air Force Nurse @Tachikawa AFB.The Navy couldn't handle all of your men injured during TET. Later I had the honor as a Flight Nurse of bringing Nam injured home. This video & your comment has me in tears. I was a compassionate rock back then but am a mushy old lady now. Thank you Marine for your service, I love the Marines.

We Were Soldiers... is one of my favorite movies. I was a Nam Infantry Vet and when I left Nam in 1971 I was told never tell anyone I was in Nam. I didn't until 2005, then realizing Nam Vets were appreciated, not spit on, I started wearing a Nam Vet hat and a shirt that had 87 guy's names on the back that died in my Company. I took a 8mm color film movie camera into to the bush during an Air Mobile Combat Assault, the footage is in 5 Nam documentaries with credits that I took them and I did a Tribute to the last Chaplain (Merle Brown) to be killed in combat on Easter Sunday 1971. If you want to see it, just put in Wolfie the Grunt in any search engine or RU-vid. Basil was a great man, I just wish I had served under him.

When you own 3 of the 342 medals for combat infantry ever given out... I never understood why We Were Soldiers never received higher praise because it is on of the finer Vietnam war movies ever made and is very accurate.

342 people have 3 awards of the Combat Infantryman Badge. So he owns 3 of 1,026. The Movie is accurate most of the way. I think Moore gave it 60% truth 40% Hollywood BS and Galloway called it 70-30
@jephrokimbo9050
@jephrokimbo9050 2 года назад
yes, you are certainly correct. the movie probably does not receive higher praise because the general public and the critics would not necessarily want to be reminded on that war in vietnam. the tragedy, the controversy, the tremendous loss of life as well as the ending to that war left a scar that in many ways is still with us and emblematic of a "futile effort" in many minds. for those who served, fought, died, were wounded or experienced vietnam either directly or indirectly it is a memory that many would prefer to forget. several of my uncles and older cousins served honorably and i was trained by those veterans as well as the veterans of korea. may they Rest In Peace

Wow - so inspiring! CSM Plumley died in the hospice facility in Columbus, GA, where I used to work - I remember when he was our patient. He received so many letters & cards during his stay from people all over the world - it was incredible! I was working in the building the day he died, and I remember the announcement...very sad day. In another turn of events, I’m now the pianist in the chapel where his funeral took place (The Infantry Chapel) - was actually there last nite for choir practice! Such a gorgeous & historic facility. In another weird connection, my brother was an “extra” in the movie We Were Soldiers back in 2001, and worked closely with Sam Elliott in his role as CSM Plumley - brother has great stories of the set of that movie! And finally, my step grandfather knew CSM Plumley very well, as he was also a CSM around the same time; he had only good things to say about CSM Plumley. Not intending to make this all about me & my family, but I’m so grateful to have some sort of connections to this great American hero...it made his passing even more sad & meaningful.

I was honored to have served with CSM Plumley when he was the Command Sergeant Major of The School Brigade at Fort Benning a half century ago. As I was reporting for duty he looked me over and, in true CSM fashion, he declared....,'You don't look like no whiz kid to me!" I wasn't, but I never knew that I had acquired that nickname on a previous tour of duty when I was a newly minted 2nd lieutenant.....behind my back, of course. A year or so later, I introduced him to my late mother-in-law who had survived WWII in occupied Holland. When he told her that he had visited Holland several years earlier, she asked when? He had jumped into Holland in Operation Market Garden. Hearing that, she challenged him with...."What took you so long? We were waiting for you!" All he could say in a humorous false humility was..."I got there as soon as I could!" The photo of The School Brigade headquarters contingent hangs on the wall in my office with CSM Plumley standing tall and watching over me every day.

Unfortunately my Uncle Nick, whom I’m named after, wasn’t so lucky. I made it home from Vietnam but my Uncle died on Nov 27th 1944 in Germany also as an Infantry Sergeant, but serving with Patton as Armored Escort! This was just before Patton took over , I believe, III Corps at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried in Holland. I was lucky enough to be put in touch with the man who volunteers to take care of his greave site there. It’s truly a beautiful site. It’s confusing if you Goggle our names, you find two Donvito Infantry Sergeants in two different wars.

First off, I have no idea how this got into my YT feed 9 years late but I am glad it did. CSM Plumley was the ultimate keeper of the tribal wisdom when it comes to the army. What I find even more impressive is that Sam Elliot is sitting with the family but he is never mentioned in this video. He wasn't there to promote himself but to honor a man he portrayed on the screen and that says even more about Plumley.

RIP CSM Plumley. Stay around Joe. You're the last of the 3 amigos and a hero in your own right. Happy to have met you, Doc Gracie, and Jacques the wonder dog.
