This is the horn many of you know and love. I deleted the warble on the full blasts by replacing the diaphragms and cushions in the 1 and 5 which allowed the horn to balance its sound out and make some brilliant music. This horn once again is a GW rebuild with a replacement manifold, however, it’s been determined by age, to have been from a CSX C40-8. Its an early 90s K5LA. These horns are notorious for having a flat 5 bell. Clearly that’s not the case here!

Nice K5 as always! I was wondering if there’s an actual difference in sound/tuning between 90s (P40DC) tagless narrow fonts, square tags (P42DC), and early 2000s narrow font (P42DC) k5las, or if they are only differentiated by their tag?

Basically, I’m trying to figure out if the original 1993 K5LA sound can still be heard on Genesis Locomotives today.

There’s no difference in tuning for the K5s on any of the Amtrak ge engines. They sound different because of their locations on the engine, air line plumbing, solenoid/manual valve, weather conditions etc. Amtrak started installing heated back caps on their horns which prevent the internals from icing up in cold weather. They bring the horns out of machining tolerances rather quick for some reason fouling them out but the horn eras are different which has slight changes in tuning sound but nothing Amtrak specific. It’s just how horns fell from their manufacturer who has no quality control whatsoever

@@DeepChillWolf if you put one of that era on an engine without the heater back caps, yes.

@@bigborek5la Ah, so it's practically impossible to hear the difference between a Square Tag and a Narrow Font on a P42, right? And yeah, I hate the heated back caps too.

@@DeepChillWolf square tags are narrow font horns. Everything from 76 to 89/90’were wide font. After that it went to narrow font until about 2015 when the new style back caps that say Nathan Airchime on them came out and those seemed to have returned to a wider font but aren’t considered wide fonts. Just a new era of horns. But with p42s it’s hard to tell what’s what. They use CDF cones which muffle the horn and they’re slightly recessed in the roof which also muffles the sound a bit.

Did the C40-8s have special vaulves? Cause when they stop they have a squeak to it

They had manual Graham white modulating valves with long air line lengths causing the lag. Squeaks are other issues internally.
