CT patient positioning [Centering Rational]

CT positioning is less sensitive than x-ray for image quality due to the power of 3D reconstruction. However one important topic is centering the patient within the scan field of view. The bowtie filters used on CT scanners attenuate outer rays more, and when the patient is not centered one region of the volume will get extra dose and the other region will have higher noise.

Thank alot for the video! It was very well made and enlightning. What if you examine a shoulder, and place the patient so the shoulder is in the middle of the gantry. How does this effect the dose and quality? Is it a bad thing to do?

If the shoulder centering is different than the abdomen and you do a chest-abdomen-pelvis, it could be noisier. Using the abdomen for centering is probably best as soft tissue visualization is typically done more there
