Good news - it looks like you no longer need to own the original Call To Arms to be able to play Call to Arms Gates of Hell Ostfront. It used to be you couldn't play the game without the original Call to Arms which is why I mentioned it in the video but I'm glad to report that is no longer the case!
lol I literally just put a comment about this an hour ago asking if I needed to get call to arms to play it . (I just started the video and wanted to know that before I made myself want it )
@@Gweb52 You are the reason I looked into it! I vaguely recall someone else mentioning it and from what I can see you no longer need it. I'm not sure when that changed, presumably recently!
@@David-w3l3o that is difficult to answer if you have not played a game like this before. If you are curious my advice is to purchase men of war assault squad 2. One of the most coolest and immersive WW2 Strategy game ive played soo far. i got a 15 hours gameplay after the first release and I'm loving it ever since. The game is also mod supported which made it better. I love this game.
When I first played the game what struck me most was how detailed the units were. You can really tell they put a lot of effort into authenticity which I appreciate!
@@michaelhawkins7389how can you prefer MoW better, yet this seems cool? Saying this game seems cool implies you have never played it? Just curious because I’m shopping between the 2.
@@ThrobRoss Because Men of war as2 has more maps , missions and mods from the steam workshop , its not all about graphics , and Men of war AS2 still holds up you have sirhinkels missions and Robz Realism mod just to mention a couple of mods for example that are great
@@twiglets2 multiplayer is challenging because it’s like playing chess against someone who tries to tactically outplay you. But once you get a good game going, it’s a new experience every time
Fun Fact when Downloading this game initially my external fell of my desk and broke, so I had to shell out another 150 for a new one (and a case this time) before actually getting to play ostfront. Still super worth it.
I bought this game the day it came out on Steam (aswel as Call to Arms) I also have CoH and CoH2 and all its dlc's (and often play the Blitzkrieg mod). However I find it strange you compare this game to CoH and not even mention Men of War. The game that comes closest to Gates of Hell is Men of War: Assault Squad 2. It has the same mechanics, micro managing and logistical challenges. Personally I see Gates of Hell as a sequal to MoW:AS2, and I can't wait to get my hands on the upcoming Men of War 2. Looks very promising! :)
Yes I agree re Men of War not being mentioned, it was basically an unintended omission on my part to not mention Men of War. A face palm moment for me, rather than intentional! I'm looking forward to Men of War 2 also - seeing as you've played many of the WW2 RTS big hitters I'm curious, have you played Foxhole? It's not strictly an RTS but it's caught my eye recently. A very interesting concept!
@@twiglets2 Thanks for your kind reply. And don't worry about it, making a mistake is only human. To answer your question: I haven't played Foxhole, but I knew of it, and its indeed a very interesting concept. I might get into Foxhole and try it out for myself at some point. I like the concept of prolonged drawn out engagements, fighting (virtual) wars of atrition. Also I think you deserve alot more subs for the effort you put in your high quality reviews. You deff. earned a sub from me. :) Can't wait for you to do a indepth review of Men of War 2. And would most certainly watch a: "Foxhole, is it still worth it in 2022?" video ;) I think that game deserves praise.
@@ItsShane79 Thank you for getting back to me, it's interesting to hear your thoughts - and you're too kind about my sub count! I'll certainly be looking at Men of War 2 when it eventually comes out and you've persuaded me Foxhole is a good idea. I like the thought of spending an evening trying to progress a battle, then coming back a week later and finding it's still the same war!
Are you considering purchasing Ostfront? This may well be the next WW2 experience you're looking for! If you enjoy Steel Division 2 you'll enjoy the depth and detail of the various units.
I was late to the MOWAS2 party, but really love the game play it supports. Just got Call to Arms GOHO and have to say I am very impressed. Highly recommend this game to RTS fans.
@@nubtube7313 I'm doing it the other way round, I have MOWAS2 on my wishlist but fell in love with Ostfront first! Do you ever find there are too many games with too little time? Oh and money, that's the main problem!
@@twiglets2 I still enjoy playing MOWAS2 because of the different factions, but Ostfront ushers in some pretty big improvements in realism like gun armor mechanics as well as the ability to use first person. I am sure you are well aware, but for any of your viewers that don't have the game yet, reading the development updates on Steam, or following the Developer is really worthwhile for anyone interested.

Great video! been looking forward to picking up CTA for awhile but fortunately there was a sale making the bundle with Ostfront way cheaper than the base game full price. Great video looking forward to trying it out after the base game.
@@twiglets2 you showed that hakf the gameplay is menu micromanagement. I am looking for an rts mixed with xcom where you only play 1 or 2 squads max. I tried the game out and everything you sad was true. It was to much for me.
Glad to have come across this video. Been waiting for something like this, but with tunnel vision on old CoH and not thrilled for newer versions, just getting various mods to fill that strategy game crave. This game and sleet division, for its bigger picture and scale and also Ostfront's FPS action blended in there. Will have to give both a try once a sale comes. Any recommendation for a the next game Ill be waiting for: A game slighter further on the FPS side of the RTS-FPS spectrum, same concept of this game but experience is of any one unit at a time in the middle of a bigger battle, but still hold that spirit of Strategy. Few games out there in a more traditional FPS like BF/HLL/Enlisted, but much slower with a RTS feel of scale and micro/macro elements like this game.
The new COH version has gone away from what I loved about it. Men of War was my favorite of all, but CTA is essentially a better version of MOA, so hell yeah, finally going to pick it up.
This video was amazing in quality, both from the presentation to the way you have divided up all the sections of it. Thank you for letting us enjoy such a good review. +1 Subscriber!
Thank you! And thanks for making such an awesome game! Is there new content on the way? Would love to make a follow up video later this year as the game progresses.
@@twiglets2 The only content Poor Barbedwire Studios is going to release is the content they are allowed to release/ told to release by the boardroom of 'Digitalmindsoft' If the community is lucky, they might see support in the form of patches and updates like they have over the last year. But only for so much longer. "As of recently, the Men of War series developed some bad reputation with greedy, copy-paste releases and whatnot. Yeah its a new developer handling the game this time around but they aren't out of the clear yet and I feel they are deemed to follow in the same footsteps. Stripping a game of content to profit later as DLC is terrible. Not only is it anti-consumer, but it ruins the gaming industry and is something that NOBODY wants in their games. I greatly fear that is what we will see with future content from these developers."
I have been a fan of this series of games since soldiers heroes of ww2 back in 2006 this game is the best yet, i am really enjoying the level of detail i like the fact i can slow the game right down and issue orders then speed it up for normal play fantastic feature fantastic game supported by fantastic developers, i look forward to other nations of ww2 being included eventually, thanks for the great review and making things clear to new and old players. much love to all.
Thanks for the comment John it's great to hear from experienced players and those who are long time fans of the series, it's nice to get your blessing so I know the video is a fair one for potential new players.
I've just get a pc a week back mainly for this game as I also loved Soldiers heroes of WW2, and it's exactly what I wanted and more, I was blown away by the sight of a naval bombardment whilst my camera was right in the midst of it, the sheer detail is awesome plus I was in the slowest slow mo at the time issuing orders so I seen the shells arcing down, the sheer destruction is truly awesome. @@twiglets2 great I'm always glad to provide some Inspiration even when I don't mean to. Great channel btw, I actually watched this video before buying GOH.
Thanks! Great review. I was wondering to buy it after getting really disappointed with the original call to arms. Playing the men of war series over and over really got me bored. Long live the modders for keeping those games fun for so long!
It's a decent game, and there are others that are available or several on the horizon, it's a good time to have the RTS itch! Not so much without the PC though unfortunately :(
I find it really amazing that the series still exists in the form it does. The very first game in the series, also based on the same engine, was "Soldiers: Heroes of World War II", released in 2004. This was not a CoH imitation, but rather a more accessible "Commandos". Because in this first part you only controlled a small squad of soldiers, it didn't yet stand out so negatively that you had to manage each soldier's inventory individually and babysit them all the time. But as you can imagine, such an overly complicated and micro-intensive system doesn't scale very well. And yet, since then, numerous developers based on the same engine have released plenty of CoH imitations without implementing the essential improvements COH has had since Part 1. Even the animations of the soldiers are sometimes just as unintentionally funny as they were almost 20 years ago. How the series could still be successful enough for so long is a mystery to me. I, for one, would like to play something else than the first CoH over and over again. Even if there are some great and interesting mods for this one, you get tired of it at some point. But the numerous CoH imitations based on the GEM engine are simply not a worthy alternative.
Thank you for sharing. I'm not technical, but I have heard the engine on this game is very limiting, and is very noticeable when you play skirmish with several players, it just can't handle it. I hope Men of War 2 improves on this.
@@twiglets2 I am not a "technician" either. I got my information from the PCGamingWiki. The problem isn't so much that they've been using the same engine for all these years, but that they've never used the money they've taken to significantly improve the engine on a technical level. A big improvement would be if, as a kind of "workaround", you could disable the inventory system.
Great video! However I'm surprised you didn't talk about the editor, it being one of the most fun aspects of the previous games in the Men of War series
Thank you! I was looking into this because it's looks fun with a ton of depth and IT IS!!! Those sub-menus though... they seriously need some upscaling especially for players on a 24" monitor.
@@twiglets2 Much thanks for playing it and using accessible commentary that's friendly even to non-regular RTS fans. The ability to go 1st person was a nice touch. Could really make an impact in the grand scheme of a mission.
They haven't finish the Modern Warfare themed Call to Arms, that game was the closest thing to the original Men of War gameplay experience but sets in present day instead of WW2 . Futhermore, it combines hardcore realism and fun into RTS game. The developers should finish that game instead of leaving it to Men of War modders to do it.
i love this game so much. This is what i thought the first Call To Arms i bought was promising me. Worth the wait and they have given me a WW2 RTS that i can play for the next 5 years. No other can give me that clang of the 88 shell burning up a T-34 or below or the massive bomb crater of rail way gun that i can run an infantry with a panzershrek into while getting shot at by multiple tanks and machine guns. Looting of bodies for gear, laying mines down, taking trenches with infantry by throwing 10 different exploding explosives...... easily the best game i bought in a few years. Since..... MB 2 Bannerlord.
Nice review. I recently came across this game on Steam special $AU12 for Osfront and $AU27 for the DLC Liberation. I have played Company of Heroes in the past but I like this one even though I get a bit overwhelmed with the action at times.
@@Myterriers I get overwhelmed too. I think that is a part of the appeal as there's so much going on. How is the liberation dlc? I haven't tried it yet
@@twiglets2 It’s great I like some of the comments when in first person view as a soldier ie throwing a hand grenade he say “ Greetings from Uncle Sam”.
My golly I'm in love with gates of hell. Its the closed thing i can find to a successor to the original sudden strike games circa 2000-2004. I just hope to see very large scale scenarios with 100s of inf and 25+ tanks like those old days of SS 😍
Personally I think it's the best WW2 RTS game at the moment. I know everybody loves Company of Heroes, and Gates of Hell may not be as refined as CoH, but I just think it's a great product with a great story! Sure the first person can be clunky, but I've had some great fun commanding tanks and mowing down troops, can't do that in Company of Heroes!
@m_zbrv3967 Agreed! Although I've been hoping they would improve the performance but as far as I'm aware there are still issues when you play multiplayer, it's a shame.
Great review! Compared to the base game, and besides the theater, Is there anything new as far as game mechanics, game modes, etc. I don't care about the location, time period, or different units. I just want to know if Ostfront offers any new features, or QoL improvements.
I totally agree, several comments have mentioned that and I really should have included it! I had originally intended to but it re-writing the script several times it got missed out (very silly!)
@@twiglets2 nah it's nothing against you, I just found the game to be exactly like mowas2 when I played like a demo or something lol Kind of why I didnt really like it, since I found mowas2 a bit too tedious and detailed(in the sense that you had to literally inventory manage each individual troop but I guess that was the point: squad based rts. I'm more into Eugen rts imo tho)
I've been trying to play this game for 4 months. I just downloaded GoH/OF, after trying to play the initial download. I can't find a "training manual", per se. A training manual word be ideal, as I could "word search". This video was extremely helpful, it's done very well. When Twiglets2 says "there could be some helpful hints", that is too true. It took about 30 minutes to get kitted out. On to the rifle range and I can't find a way for my private to shoot.
@wellimagamer8848 it's not a dlc and you don't need call to arms to play gates of hell Ostfront. It used to be you needed call to arms but you no longer do

Thank you I'm glad you liked it! I kick myself that I didn't mention MoWAS2 when I made this video (more of a forgetful error than anything) but having made a separate video on that game recently I can see why people say it, they're basically the same game - big fan of both now
Great review! thanks for the effort. Buy my question: okay, so you can control troopers individually. But when you assign a platoon or section to a mission, do they respond reasonably? or like brain-damaged lemmings? *--Dawks **_[PIR]_*
Haha thank you for your kind words! In my opinion the AI is pretty decent, but not perfect (it never is!) There are definitely times when the troops do stupid things, like they won't all line up in a trench, one of them will stand next to the trench and die which is frustrating. But on the whole I think they respond well and I can't think of a strategy game where the ai is 100% perfect. Hope that helps! There's also a new DLC which I need to check out, exciting times!
@@twiglets2 That's really interesting. The way I described my experience: sometime FTL commands which way to go around a tree or bolder or whatever. But usually, not. Up to the grunt. Likewise SL usually leaves all that to FTL and below. But not always. Platoon leader almost *_always_*_ sees what the FTL does not._ So? the "little things" are actually kinda complicated and really do make a big difference! ^5
good review - but you missed to add the observation on how slow and animation for the plane is a bit ridiculous, instead of been a fast plane bombing / strafe objective or so on. Also the edge of map, is empty, not field of view, they could set some hills or more sky quality. Also you didn't mention about the size of the map, which feels small after a while. They need to increase the size of the map for the modding community to produce good maps.
Have yet to watch the video but I went straight into the comments section and the mention of SD2 on the pinned comment pleases me because, indeed, I love SD2 (And MoWAS2, if it counts) and I'm looking to get GoH because hot damn is today's sale juicy. Hope I come out of this video with a yes, I should buy it. If not, oh well, still plenty of SD2, MoW and HoI4 to play in this lifetime.
I look forward to hearing whether you make a purchase or not! I'm glad to hear you mention HoI4, I've got serious love for that game and just so happen to be listening to the soundtrack right now. Might need to make a video on that one too!
@@twiglets2 Indeed I made the purchase. Filesizes were larger than I expected and it I had to leave it downloading overnight but I'll soon give it a try. But before that, I got an urge to play MoWAS2 since I mentioned it.
@@twiglets2 Having just tried the bootcamp and Trial By Fire missions of GoH, I can tell you that this game is basically MoWAS2 except it looks cooler and shinier, so I definitely recommend you get the other one. Some things to mention though, MoWAS2 can be a bit dated : all of the in-game tutorial videos stopped working and the devs never fixed it, but you can still find them fairly easily through RU-vid or Steam forums. The first mission of every nation is basically a very cinematic tutorial on tactics, but not about mechanics. Also you don't get the over-the-shoulder/3rd person view on direct control, it's all played through bird's eye RTS camera. And finally, the menus are from 10 years ago and it shows. Other than that, they're both the same game with the added bonus that the modding community for MoWAS2 is pretty damn solid by now so you can find entire campaigns more easily.
It's a fair question, and one I don't really have an answer to. I can see on my original notes I was going to mention Men of War but didn't include it in the final video for some reason, a silly omission I guess. I've been planning to play Assault Squad 2 but haven't gotten round to it yet.

I've been curious about this game for ages now, but it never seems to go on sale - or have I just missed every single sale this game has been in over the past year or so?
@@twiglets2 Sometimes I think I must be cursed when it comes to these things. Well, I'll keep on keeping an eye on it in that case! Thought it might be a case like... Kenshi, was it? Or Factorio? There's a couple Indies at least that have stated they don't plan to participate in sales or the like so as to remain at a price point that sustains further development if memory serves.
I HATE this. I hate the fact that an apparent dlc has devolved and inferior multiplayer, yet is more active than the modern part main game which has more armies, more balance, more game modes, more beautiful and more fun. Why? Why is an inferior game mode with only 2 armies and full of imbalance, (arty spamming and all that bs is encouraged btw) has way more players? I absolutely do not get it. OG mode - Fun tactical battles with good game modes gates of hell - 2 armies with lesser detail than assault squad 2, engaging in arty spam I have lost faith in rts' honestly. The community is trash. I really really hope coh3 will create a good community. edit: Also what is with the single player campaign? It literally plays like a different game, a worse game, where you try to clean a map with diarrhoea amounts of static braindead ai garbage with only a handful equipment and men. Sure the OG game is no better but had way more attention to detail and story telling. Gates of hell is like a couple of typo filled conversation bubbles and take your 5 men and delete the entire whatever opposing army is...
It's interesting to hear your point of view because I actually played Gates of Hell first. Thought it was a great game (couldn't really understand the negativity some people have), but then I play Assault Squad 2 quite recently and I'm starting to understand. Do you think the ai is worse than in the OG game? It is confusing when you think of it as you've explained. I can only think that like me there are many who have discovered this game without much knowledge of the previous Men of Wars and just assume it's a game that stands on it's own two feet. You've clearly played a lot more of the series than I have so I know very little to be honest.
@@twiglets2 Yes, you are very astute. I have many hours in previous titles. Let me just say call to arms is the absolute peak when it comes to balance, game modes, how long it takes for each game, polish, etc etc. There is this retardation in rts community where a single change from the norm, even in setting in case of call to arms, causes this bs reaction from community. They simply go out and either exaggerate what already is there or make up retarded faults. This is one of the reasons Company of Heroes was better than 2, dawn of war 2 had a VERY similar reaction that it got bashed just because there was minimal base buildig, everyone went full retard and burried the most brillian 40k game of all time together and eventually got dow3 because well, developer also thought they were retards and game them a retarded game... We have also lost the most brilliant rts of all time, namely sumpreme commander forged alliance, because of said retardation. Oh I definitely do not want to start on this one... All in all, rts community is retarded, mostly because the people playing them most went old and quit and the fukin pubg fortnite playing dumass of a generation came and ruined everything. I they say ruined it because they never picked up rts to begin with and rts lost its popularity. Now we have a million more players on aoe2 because thats what boomers played and can only relate to and buy to begin with... All in all, rts is a dead genre and this so sad. Its community is mostly retarded people who can only play that one game and cannot experience something new even if it is better. Because they are mostly old, or old in the brain... I have high hopes on company of heroes 3. Bought my graphics card and waiting for now...
Great video! very detailed nwn. Now, The only game i play like this is Company of Heroes, and I love it, but lacks realism and individual unit select for my taste, hehe. This game looks exactly what i want, but i have a couple of doubts. Can you name the soldiers?? And the carry over next mission? I just love to be emotionally invested, hehe. Also, how this compare with Men of War Assault Squad 2? And can you play as USA, British Army or Japan? Hope someone can help me decide ^w^
nope just ussr and germany, mods can “fix it” but nothing base game personally i prefer mowas2, i think? i’m qualified since i have like 800 hours in mowas2 and abt 150 on goh, personally i don’t really mess with base game campaign, mow has much much better custom campaigns where as you say i find myself invested in a single squad as normally ammo is scarce and i have to scavenge and by the end i have a super veteranized well equipped squad, goh just doesn’t have the mod support dispite having better animations and graphics and much much better control i still prefer mow.
I like the Dynamic Conquest since I can have my own Beutewaffe, I’m playing as Germany and have multiple KV-2s I killed and repaired to keep as my own. Hehehe
Current day its somewhat worth it, don't do it for the mods as the devs ruined it. (Or so i've read.) Although, it has one of the most unique gamemodes it has to offer. From conquest to other fun playstyles. And if mods are properly made, you can have various amounts of replayability
@@twiglets2 I've read all kinds of familiar things regarding bigger workshop mods. From zombie mods. Warhammer mods leaving for assualt squad 2 due to the code being "horrible to work with."
@@twiglets2 honestly I think the complexity puts alot of people off...something like COH that's essentially a dumb down version of CTA, but for those who play CTA it's amazing
Yes, basically! I think there are a few improvements here and there but others describe it as a DLC to Men of War as they're basically the same, which I don't think is a bad thing!
Yeah the graphics are unfortunate, they look more and more out of date and I believe there's a technical issue where the game will only use one CPU core so a lot of your CPU just isn't used which is unfortunate. Don't get me wrong, graphics aren't everything, but I don't see how they can improve it significantly without a complete engine overhaul, so looks like they're here to stay as they are
Just got the game. Initial impressions is I'm not a fan. The game takes forever too load things, and it bogs down other things on my computer while trying too load things. Gameplay is jerky. I have played a bazillion other war games on this PC with no problems, so I don't think it's a PC problem. No tutorial too tell me what all the symbols mean. Wouldn't recommend the game at this point although I will continue too play it some and maybe It will grow on me.
Thanks for sharing. Several others have told me that (for various technical reasons) the game is not well optimized and you can struggle particularly when trying skirmish with four players. I think also this is a limitation of the code, so there's not much they can do to make it better! I don't understand the technical side, this is just what I've heard.
not worth it at leas that price that steam is asking for. for the game it isnt too bad could be far better honestly. there is a lot can be done map wise, such as rotation alignment etc. For game maps think there has to be more available near every map regardless of mission its the same.
back in the day i can imagine wasting my life on a game like this its too good to be true but now i dont think i have enough patience for a masterpiece like this with all its details
@hcohic9884 Its true, I feel your pain! It can be fun to have a quick battle with hundreds of units slogging it out but to play the game properly is quite a commitment with the level of detail and stealth missions
@@twiglets2 its one of those games you need to really learn it in all its aspects to get the real experience its not a 1 or 1.5 hours sitting everyday after work .. its a vacation type of game where you need to sit for 3 or 4 hours
I believe the developers are different but Gates of Hell Ostfront is based on the Men of War engine, so it makes sense that they feel the same as they started out the same!
reminds me of men of war assault squad..i think more so than company of heroes. Warthunder makes sense bc of vehicle combat. Overall looks like a newer/improved version of men of war assault squad 2. I would buy this ovwe men of war 2 bc I played the test of it and like men of war assault squad better, this game looks like its inspired from it
@__dudewitagun__4607 Absolutely it's like Men of War Assault Squad which I did plan to mention but for some reason it didn't make it into the video(!) They use the same engine, and in essence Ostfront is an attempt to modernise that game. It will be interesting to see if Men of War 2 will be as good as Ostfront. If you like Men of War Assault Squad 2 and Ostfront I've just released a video comparing the two in the form of a wrestling match. Feel free to check it out if you have time :)
Thank you my friend, and for taking the time to leave a comment! I hope you enjoy the future videos too, let me know if a specific game needs covering!
@lukeb1663 Absolutely, I had originally intended to mention Men of War but went down the CoH route instead unfortunately. Do you think Ostfront has surpassed Men of War?
@@twiglets2 that’s a really tough question. I think MoWAS (2 especially) has the better skirmish mode (purely for the extra unit variety), but I genuinely love the dynamic campaign mode. As for the narrative campaign, I think Ostfront has the edge there but it’s been so long since I played MoW, so I can’t fully say. Edit: overall, I’d probably say that it is better just because of the dynamic campaign which is super fun. Edit 2: I just got recommended your MoW v Ostfront video which was an absolute blast. Personally, I don’t usually care much for graphics, but the sound quality (the soundtrack is bleh) of Ostfront is incredible and I frequently enjoy playing the game just to listen to the sound effects of artillery, small arms, and tank engines. I completely forgot about that when I was making this comment.
@@lukeb1663 I found the dynamic campaign an interesting struggle! It's a shame Ostfront doesn't have more factions, that's my main gripe to be honest. Glad you enjoyed the versus video, that was great fun to make!
