2019 update version is now available!
Ride the Rails in Real-time: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
Ride the Rails in Time-lapse: • CTA's Ride the Rails: ...
This video has been updated. The new 2015 version can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aVaR...
The CTA has more than 224 miles of railroad tracks across Chicago and surrounding suburbs, serving the agency's eight rail lines. In an average weekday, there are about 2,200 train trips making stops at the system's 145 rail stations. For more than 100 years, the 'L' has offered a unique perspective of Chicago.
In the first-ever documentation of its kind, the CTA has created a ride along the length of each rail line. Shot in HD, you can now experience the 'L' like never before from the vantage point of the rail operator. You can even transfer between lines.
Hop aboard, and enjoy the ride.

The Blue Line was extended to Jefferson Park in 1970. It was extended to Rosemont and O'Hare in 1983 and 1984 respectively.

Almost imperceptible, but around 6:15 and 6:55 the train tunnel is dipping down below the South Branch of the Chicago River: first at Lake Street, then at Congress Street.

I never knew there were still block signals in Dearborn subway, I thought the system was entirely ATC by now.

Tone Thomas they were turned into the pink line
@ipeir

I’m not sure. They retired the tracks when the pink line opened, but they use it nowadays for transfer 6-car trains.

Tone Thomas the ramp was retired in 2008 after the Pink Line took over in ‘06. They only use the ramp for non-revenue service to move the trains. Same thing happened to the 13th St portal that leaves the State Street subway to go to the South Side.

Did you ever notice that some of the original tracks and poles and remains that are at the end of the line? We might explore it.

Cool video but it's really sad how much faster the cars are compared to the 'L'.
@BlownMacTruck

Uh what are you talking about? Between the stops the train gets up to speed with the traffic. Do you know how fast traffic is moving on the Kennedy there? That's not rush hour. It's going about 60-70 on average with the left lane going substantially faster.
@brulez123
@brulez123 9 лет назад
I believe blue line max speed is 55. There was talk of getting it up to 70 but it never materialized. I just find it disappointing that going to ohare via car is generally faster and will be for the foreseeable future. Especially when commuter trains in japan, china, and europe run at speeds at over 300mph.

brulez123 Except when there's traffic. Like, I can guarantee that I'll be able to get to the airport in 50 minutes taking bus/blue line. A taxi can be 30 minutes or an hour and a half depending on traffic.

Do you realize how congested the Kennedy Expressway normally gets at rush hour? When my sister graduated from the University of Chicago in June 2013, she and I took the Blue Line from downtown to O'Hare. Our parents took a taxi. We beat them to the United check-in counters by at least half an hour.
@Harakan21

brulez123 current rail line improvements will decrease travel time by 10 min when completed. Would be nice if trains ran 70mph.

3 stations (Washington, Monroe, & Jackson) all look like one really big station. What a waste of resources...
