@Marshal_Rock 6 лет назад
Nathan Gatten the media basically fucked the influence of the US folk in the Vietnam War after the Tet Offensive, even though the american marines and the south vietnamese soldiers repelled it, of course, they had heavy casualties in infraestructure and lives... I sometimes wonder if that media could have been able to report during the WW2 in any front, the outcome would have changed in any way, like making gory descriptions of the battles or reporting rumors back home when information was harder to verify...
@TheSilverSky91
@TheSilverSky91 6 лет назад
It depends, the Axis (especially Japan) were known for hiding losses (Miday for one) from nearly everyone (government, other military units, civilians) that might have led to an early loss of support and on both sides it might have lead to the early sacking of incompetent commanders (Patton, though not incompetent, might not have had his career survive what he did in Italy), which may have led to more competent commanders rise through the ranks faster. The media would have definitely impacted the success of the D-Day landings if not for the UK's efforts at secrecy.
@Marshal_Rock
@Marshal_Rock 6 лет назад
TheSilverSky91 yeah, I think the same, but just thinking how things could have changed if the media could have had access to certain info, like the hundreds of bodies spread of american, brittish and soviet soldiers in all fronts and the impact in those at home expecting their soldiers to come back from their fronts

We came even closer when a Russian satellite detected US missiles on their way to Moscow. Literally every green light went off to return fire, but the Russian who was suppose to actually push the button thought it was odd that the USA would launch missiles without any kind of provocation, fully knowing that Russia could easily return fire. And he successfully predicted that the USA hadn't launched missiles. Turned out there was just an electronics malfunction, which was promptly fixed.

Fun historical fact: At the same time JFK went live, announcing the missile crisis, a satirical comedy album about kennedy and his family was being recorded in front of a live studio audience. "The First Family." The audience roared and laughed at the numerous digs at the president, unaware of the developing situation occurring right outside their studio. It's a very interesting snapshot of public sentiment of JFK and cold war relations on the day that announcement went out.

Do you know that Guevara's name was Ernesto? Che is a unique expression of the Argentines. It is used to get someone's attention There is no translation but the closest thing would be hey. This word is unique to the Argentines, so the Cubans who did not understand the meaning began to call Guevara Che.

@juancariasr7932
@juancariasr7932 6 лет назад
Lol no, che is used in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Southern Brazil, Bolivia, Galicia and even the Falklands to varying degrees. Its origin is uncertain, as there are expressions in Guaraní, Venecian Italian and Valencian Spanish from which it could have originated. Your comment also implies Cubans were ignorant of its meaning, when in fact you are. Che loosely means friend, dude, mate, pal and is used similarly to the Venezuelan "Pana", the Colombian "Parce" or the Mexican "Güey", "cuate" or "Carnal", the Costarrican, Honduran and Salvadorian "Mae" or "Maje", the Lunfardian "Pibe", the Paraguayan "Kape" and the Cuban "Asere", and that's just scratching the surface. In short, there are variations and equivalents of Che in pretty much all of the Spanish dialects, so it's pretty outstanding to think the Cubans wouldn't have understood its meaning. The term is commonly used to refer to Argentinians around Latin America.

+Tano Strelok No, I'm not scared because I'm Columbian, but because of all the harm the Venezuelan government's policies have done to its own people. I'm not scared of the Venezuelan government, I'm scared for its citizens because of all the needless suffering the Venezuelan government has caused to the Venezuelan people. I have empathy for those poor bastards, and for what's been done to them against their will, and I'm scared it's going to get a lot worse for them before it's going to get any better.

Amazing video as always! I'd love to see you guys do a series on the Habsburgs, especially Charles V and his immediate family. So much happened during his rule, such as the conquest of Mexico and much of the Americas, the fall of Hungary and the siege of Vienna, the birth of the Protestant Reformation, the Italian Wars, the rivalry between Francis I and Charles, European efforts to halt the spread of the Ottomans, etc. It would be a nice way to tie in with the Suleiman series that briefly touched on them (the Habsburgs).

First of all, great video! I learn so much that I never new in these series. Like how a bear nearly started WWIII, or how the film industry was used to scare and confuse nazi Germany about the event of D-day. Or maybe how the soviets buried their tanks in the battle of Kursk. In other words, my curiosity of history has gone through the roof with this channel. Keep up the amazing work, and get the next part of this story out ASAP!

You know, it’s funny. I look forwards to watching these videos and have watched nearly all the extra history episodes, but in school I don’t enjoy history class at all. And I don’t think it’s the fact that i have to do worksheets and stuff. Yeah worksheets are boring but if we got to learn from videos like this and fill out worksheets after as more of a way to make us pay attention I think all history classes could be fun again. Instead of reading out of textbooks and writing endless notes we could actually want to learn about history.

Presentation is key. You can take a fantastic setting and story and make it boring as hell. Look at the 100 Year War, or the Norse civilization, or the Mongolian Empire (and what stopped them from expanding into SE Asia and Japan). All of these things are actually riveting stories and settings, but until recently there hasn't been interest in them.

Love it when you guys use historical recordings, video, photographs and such. You've got a great style for your art that helps you break down and illustrate stories, but seeing a photograph or hearing a voice can be a powerful kick to the head. "That's him. That's real. This isn't just a story, it actually happened." That realization, that moment where the tangible reality of an event just slams into you, that's what I study history for.

There are probably plenty of people here who know this, but I do see the misunderstanding all the time. The military's DEFCON status counts from 5 (normal force readiness) to 1 (maximum force readiness). I was in NORAD for 4 out of the 6 years I was in the Air Force, and I see the mistake all the time. I think even a song said "Defcon 5!" once indicating that things have gone terribly wrong. It's actually the other way around. We want to stay at 5 as long as possible, 1 means we're all dying... Since 9/11 We've been at a permanent 4...

Because, in the West, everybody knew. The deployments weren't hidden at all, and were fairly well publicized. Reconnaissance flights by Soviet and Warsaw Pact aircraft over the missile sites were common. (In fact, a Bulgarian MiG-17 crashed next to one of the Italian Jupiter squadrons) The fun part of it all was that it was completely pointless. The Jupiters were useless as weapons - unreliable, inaccurate, with slow reaction times. Even at the time of the deployment of the Jupiter Squadron to Turkey, the decision had been made to retire them. They provided no capability that wasn't better performed by Continental U.S. based ICBMs, (ours worked, you see), or Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles. (Polaris)
