The entire locker room celebration in Pittsburgh as the Cubs clinch their first title in nearly 4 decades. Also included are news reports from WGN, WBBM and WMAQ.
Thanks for posting this. The most memorable report I have always remembered was the Robert Jordan report at 56:55: "The Cubs won but I'm losing!" LOL The other field reports are just funny. Larry Rodrick's report at 57:50: "This is as bad as the '68 riots!"
Spent a lot of days watching the Cubs with Grandpa in 84. I wish we would have taken the pennant that year. I didn't get to watch the World Series win with Grandpa, but his great-grandaughter did... GO CHICAGO CUBS!!!!!!!!!!! Love you Grandpa.
This is what today's playoff format would've looked like in1984. Mets win NL East, Cubs win NL Central, Padres win NL West, Cardinals and Phillies are the wild cards. Blue Jays win AL East, Tigers win AL Central, Angles win AL West with an 81-81 record. Yankees and Red Sox are the wild cards. Royals don't even get in.
Look how ecstatic the fans were over a division championship. We treated it like a World Series championship. So close that year I could taste it. Well, it took awhile but now I know the taste. Bawled like a baby. Great upload. Loved and lived this history. Thank you, Nick Johnson
From 1969-1993 only one team could win the American and National league's Eastern and Western divisions and make it to the league championship series. No wildcard back then. So it was more special then. And for the Cubs it was the first pennant of any kind since 1945.
I really mean this , thank u from the bottom of my heart for posting this. I remember watching this live when I was 7 years old with my family. I haven’t seen this footage since. Thank u so much for posting this plus the local commercials are a huge bonus!
Definitely classic Harry, but he was kind of dick to Jack Brickhouse with the Sox reference. For me, Jack Brickhouse will always be the #1 play-by-play Announcer in Cubs history. I loved Harry's enthusiasm and passion for the game, but he was a Cardinals and White Sox announcer for a long time before joining the Cubs. I know Harry became more popular with his brash style and beer drinking persona, but in my opinion Brickhouse will always be the Cubs #1 announcer.(1941-1945, 1948-1981)
"Here we are. I hope we get loaded tonight." Drunk Harry = priceless. I really hope that when the Braves clinch a playoff berth (which I hope will be soon), that Chip will follow in his granddad's footsteps and get loaded on champagne in the locker room. In fact I think that all hometown broadcasters should get loaded on champagne in the locker room during their team's big celebrations, which would make for great Television.
I was due to be born that day, and my parents are Cubs fans, so they thought it would have been something if I was born then (I wasn't until the 12th of October). I'm a Cubs fan as well, by the way (what can I say, I was born to be one).
Winning the division used to be a big deal for some perennial non-contenders in baseball; however, nowadays, due to the new playoff format, it's all about wins and losses. It's not going to be special anymore if the likes of the Marlins or the Reds win a division title.
