Super important context- in a game against the Diamondbacks, Cutch was baited into reaching out for a pitch in a similar way, then was intentionally hit by a pitch in the back. A day later, it was found he had a rib fracture. That was the first actual trip to the DL in his career. Cutch definitely remembers that, and you can tell because he stands so far out. That down and away pitch surely took him back to when he was knocked out in a playoff season.

I remember that. The Bucs broke Goldschmidt's hand earlier in the series. (I don't think it was the same game but I could be wrong.) But they waited til the 8th inning of the (next?) game and threw two pitches low and away before going for his ribs. Bush league. Edit: It was the next game. But in the 9th. Plenty of time for that crap earlier.

I feel like the pitcher didn't want to bean him and was having a hard time intentionally throwing at a dude he had no issue with. Even in the last thing when he was telling his coach "he told me to do it on the first pitch." His body language is like how someone would react when you get scolded for doing something you knew was wrong and you deserve it and you know the other guy is right and you feel bad. Great breakdown.

@@respectfullydisagree711 There absolutely is a moral high ground here, and an unspoken rule. Lulling a batter into getting relaxed by throwing honest throws just to try to hit him is precisely the way to injure them. You're telling me all of a sudden, the pitcher just managed to throw more progressively way off almost three times in a row after one good one? The second throw was even ambiguous as to if it was a fair throw or an attempt to hit him. That's way dirtier than just looking to hit the person in a game that's already riddled with hits. You ever play baseball with guys that can pitch past 60mph? You'd get ejected borderline anywhere trying something like that. Accidents happen, but three curved throws in his direction, getting progressively worse and closer to the batter, dude deserves getting ridiculed. At the very, very least, conceal it better

Agree. In a situation like this, young guy brought in specifically to bean a batter, the manager should get the suspension. If it’s a seasoned veteran, like Cole or Verlander, then suspend the pitcher too because it’s just as much their decision. But this young guy has no agency here. He has to do what his manager tells him.

Like maybe 3 feet off the plate instead of 5 ft. Then bean him. He is on NO moral high ground here whatsoever
@Cabeson24
@Cabeson24 2 года назад
@@respectfullydisagree711 *have. It's funny that you think laying outside to draw him back in, then hitting him, doesn't somehow result in something worse happening. He knew he was going to get hit so he didn't bother digging in and getting settled. The pitcher could have drilled him on the first pitch and saved his own arm the 4 additional pitches. That he didn't, quickly became an obvious sign of nerves. Everyone saw that. Yeah, getting hit by a 90+ mph pitch doesn't feel good. So naturally, his adrenaline is gonna get going a little bit in agitation. Having to wait out all those pitches until he finally got the gumption up to hit him is clearly going to exacerbate that. So yeah, it's entirely natural that he's probably gonna have something to say to let the steam out a little. But his point is valid. "We all know it's coming. Just do it and get it over with so we can all move on, and I don't have to have this shit looming over my head". He's just a veteran, top guy, giving a young kid a good pointer. This is the bigs, everyone knows how the game is played. Everyone is grown and super talented at this level. So just be a man about it and do what you gotta do, and noone will take much offense to it. They all get it. But dragging it out, or baiting a batter, that sends and entirely different message. And that can bring about an entirely different result. That's half the reason the benches cleared. But Cutch is a seasoned vet, and an MVP, which is why he's a leader in his clubhouse. He calmed things down just by talking it out for a second. Clearly we respectfully disagree. But I'll say this, if you go with your approach, you won't be around for long. The umps would toss you. Your coach wouldn't give you the trust of making a call like that with you on the mound, and eventually your team would send you down until you wisened up. These are all elite level athletes playing a game and making a living. 99.9999% of the time noone is deliberately trying to hurt anyone. If they wanted to, they could really damage one another. That's not the point of any of this. Have a nice day kiddo.

Certainly some internal hesitation from the pitcher, as to my knowledge he hadn’t been asked to hit anyone in his college or minor career before. While I’m with Cutch here on the “just get it done” point, as well as mocking him for his missed attempts, I think the first strike seems like an effort for plausible deniability to try and avoid getting tossed. Certainly the multiple attempts to hit destroyed that strategy. Somewhat odd in that if he had just hit him on the first attempt post-strike he might have just gotten tossed from that game rather than the subsequent suspension

Fun fact. Over the last couple years, the brewers have only the cubs 1 more time (maybe a couple more after the start of this year) than the cubs have hit the brewers
@ChargerBulldogs19
@ChargerBulldogs19 2 года назад
Important context: Willson Contreras has been the recipient of most of those HBPs. I understand the HBPs team to team are fairly even, but the Contreras factor makes me think at the very least that part is intentional. I can get behind the fact the Cubs and Brewers have generally wild pitching which accounts for a decent chunk of those HBPs, but when most are focused toward one player, that’s what makes me think it’s at least partially intentional.

@@ChargerBulldogs19 Contreras crowds the plate more than any Cub in recent memory, Rizzo included. Milwaukee's strategy to pitch to him has always to bust him inside so he can't get his arms extended. He's gotten hit a lot because he doesn't give an inch while standing damn near on top of the plate. Then he gets pissy when he gets hit and looks for retaliation. He admitted as much last year that they were trying to hit Woodruff.

You gotta do one on the Braves/Nats multiple pickle rundown that led to both runners safe and a Braves run. Plus, you should throw in Dee Strange-Gordon plunking Travis d'Arnaud with a 56mph fb that nearly killed Trav

A warning should have been issued when Happ got hit. It was pretty clear it was intentional and it was what the 2nd or 3rd hit batter of the game. The first one or two may not have been intentional but the one at Happ definitely was. I agree with the ejection but the suspensions to Thompson and Ross are kind of ridiculous.

How was the Happ hit intentionally? It was obviously a slider that got away. Thankfully his x-rays are negative at least.

I hate the punk ass “hold me back!” move Heyward did. There’s always THAT guy who comes in hauling ass trying to be a hardass knowing damn well they aren’t going to do anything. Mainly because people will intervene before he gets there, but even they didn’t, it’d just be a “that’s not nice” yell match.

Heyward may suck, but he’s no more of a clown than McCutchen. McCutchen whined like a little bitch when he got plunked on the leg. Contreras was hit 5 times in that series. He wasn’t happy about it, but said nothing. Catchers get beat up enough as it is without getting plunked twice a day. I’ve never liked McCutchen from day one. There’s really just something about his attitude that rubs me the wrong way. This really didn’t help that situation at all. Such a freaking cry baby. 😭 He’s a good player, but don’t respect him too much aside from that. He wanted out of Shittsburg, & has gone downhill every season since. Be careful what you wish for, huh? He’s just another dude out there now, nothing special anymore. He hasn’t been since 2015.

If Heyward wanted to be tough he should play football. Very few actual tough guys in Baseball. More than soccer, but Football, hockey and even basketball players got nothing to fear from guys who ROUTINELY MISS GAMES GETTING HURT IN THEIR OWN HOMES and allow themselves to get bullied by fat old white guys - the obese umps.

In cricket we have a similar tactic called 'bodyline bowling' in case you doubt that would hurt, it weighs six ounces is hard, and can be delivered at over 100mph. "Nicknamed Rawalpindi Express, Shoaib Akhtar bowled the fastest delivery in cricket - 161.3 km/hr (100.2 mph) "

I've gotta agree with Cutch. It's bogus to draw him in on the first pitch, but that's the lesser offense. That dude took 3 throws at Cutch, and turned that at bat into a one sided game of dodgeball with the potential for serious injury. If he's not good enough to hit a person at all, then why should we believe he's not gonna hit him in the head/neck area? I'd agree with Cutch then, either you're good enough to do it right, or you shouldn't be doing it at all. You can change someone's life up there.
