I'm from Ecuador, thank you very much for your kind words about our country, we are a small country but very lovely and peaceful. God bless you all you're welcome 🇪🇨❤️
@@endicada9359 I live in Quito, a beautiful city too. Most of the ecuatorians are nice and peaceful people and love the tourists because we understand that our country can offer a lot of pretty things. Cuenca is a smaller city and maybe more quiet than Quito. Both are very charming
I’m an Ecuadorian living in Houston, but I remember going to Cuenca every spring for break and loving everything about the city. Although Guayaquil is where my home is, I have always had a soft spot for the Andes. Took my wife to city outside of Cuenca in 2003 and we fell in love with it’s highland country feel.
I did enjoy the video, truth is you can live very economically in Ecuador. But life there is not perfect either. I can see myself doing what most Ecuadorian’s who live outside of Ecuador do - spring and fall in the U.S. / summers and winters in Ecuador (Andes and the Coast).
@@WarrenJulieTravel I have a remote cybersecurity job, and need internet to be super reliable and comparable to US internet. Do you have any idea how her internet compares?
What a free and courageous soul! As a local I feel proud whenever I hear people talk about how much they like my city.. I hope you never change your opinion :) Blessings to you all and thanks for sharing these wonderful videos!
Love Ecuador, been There and I was surprised with the cost of living and great gastronomy they have, Other places Are Very Expensive but I was really amazed with the low prices
I love Cuenca, Ecuador. I spent six months there earlier this year. As a world traveler, it is one of my favorite places and I may retire there in five years or so.
I just returned from Ecuador and spent two weeks in Cuenca, a month in Manta and a week in Galapagos. Cuenca is a lovely city with so many places to visit and with the Tranvia you can get across the city inexpensively and quickly. I was lucky enough to meet friends in Galapagos who live in Cuenca and they also have a really nice apartment for a very reasonable cost. Ecuador is a beautiful country with wonderful people. I will very likely return there.
I really appreciate this video! I’ve mostly traveled in Mexico but am going to have to experience Cuenca. I love the detail you offer in the presentation of a typical budget. It’s amazing how much having a car and miscellaneous expenses can blow up a budget. This person has created a lovely and interesting life!
OMG, Warren i want to live in that apartment, i still have two more years here in texas :(, love your videos, please don't stop, i have my entire family looking at your vides. chao stary safe!!
Oh I had uncomfortable style furniture. I found and bought a Chaise that I added and sat on til bedtime. I lef to care for my mom. An only child. Not sure my health is good enough to go back but I think about it.
Lovely place, lovely woman. Thank you for covering this price point; it's more what my husband and I are working with. I enjoyed the video and feel hopeful!
I visited Ecuador for 10 days a number of years ago and spent 4 in Cuenca. If I were to move to spend significant time living overseas Cuenca would be top of my list, Primary reason is the climate as I hate hot weather. Having $US as the currency is a big plus, and there are no extra costs/prices for being a foreigner.
A beautiful apartment. I couldn't believe the double glaze windows. The apartment is really big and nicely furnished, and for only 500.00 dollars a month. Impressive. And she eats out once a day. Amazing. Here in Portugal, where I live, she would pay about 50% more to live in a city of the same size.
Nice video, I’m actually from Ecuador and moved to Florida in 2002 when I was 21 years old. When I used to lived in Ecuador I used to enjoyed both worlds the coast and the highlands. I honestly enjoyed more the highlands cities. But I’m pretty much living the American dream in the States (Im a government employee and have VA disability, the wife and I don’t have kids, which is pretty sweet.) If I ever go back to Ecuador I can live like a king just with my VA disability but one thing that I do not miss from Ecuador is the robbery. I personally was robbed twice when I was a teen in Guayaquil plus the heat sucks over there that is why I enjoyed more Quito, Latacunga, Ambato, Cuenca. But good for everyone that can move and enjoy retirement in another countries with a small budget 👏🏻👏🏻
@@WarrenJulieTravel maybe we can meet up one day when I go visit my family in Ecuador, been want it to have some vacation in the highlands also I check the fundrise site, very interesting
@J Daniel I think you missed the part that I said that I’m was born and raised in Ecuador lol, Believe me I know my little country. And yes Guayaquil is a pretty bad city compared to the cities in the mountains. I have family that used to lived in Latacunga and Ambato, so I travel to the highlands all the time on vacation.
An excellent video. Thank you! had 1-800 GOT JUNK to empty my 880 sq. 2 bedroom apartment, and I moved to Mexico with the shoes on my feet and one suitcase and a backpack. I live in a beautiful furnished apartment, that includes everything, and I only buy food, water and drinks. (non alcohol) I always gave stuff away, but at 79, it was time to let go of everything. Let go and let God always . Karma never loses an address. We reap what we have sown.
Im fixing to do that this summer as soon as my lease is up. I fear being homeless in America, as im an elderly lady, alone w no safety net, and a doctor messed up my hip replacement so I'll use a walker forever. It's no condition to be alone in but I can't face the thought of being homeless, Especially in the cold. It makes me sad that America has taken in ppl from all over the world and helped them have a better life, but we have few places to go now that we are old.😢
Hi there! let Kay know that if you have yellow flowers on a hummingbird feeder..it attracts wasps...so you need to get one with red flowers and you will have hummingbirds and no wasps 😉 weird but true 🌺. The budget was reallly good and a beautiful furnished apartment! I have traveled a lot in my life so far but have never been to Ecuador.
Ecuador is a great country with great people. Not to throw shade on anyone, but you should know that the only people I know who move to Ecuador are those who never considered Colombia. Emilia and JP said so on their "why" video. In the beginnings of the Pandemic, many foreign nationals had to be rescued from Ecuador, because the government suspended all flights. I know other people who had to be rescued from Ecuador for other reasons. Visit Medellin and the Coffee Region of Colombia before you decide where to retire. Just a friendly suggestion.
I'm from Ecuador but been living in Dominican Republic for more than 25 years. This video makes me think about returning to my country LOL. I will continue looking for your videos guys :)
That is an incredible apartment! Having just visited Cuenca, i consider it to be a gem of city. Having also visited Quito, Otavalo, Cotacachi, Banos, Loja, and Vilcabamba this month, Cuenca has been my favorite city (though i have liked each of the above referenced cities; they are all distinct and have their pluses).
I spent 2 winters in Cuenca. Temperature is like spring in Toronto. Lovely place, lots of colonial buildings. I felt safe there, lots of expat activities. I'm a big city girl, so Cuenca's a little too quiet for me.
Great apt, just one thing, in from Azogues 25 minutes from Cuenca and let me tell you i pay $180 a mont eve thing included, and food is even cheaper I get 20 oranges for $1 or 5lbs bananas for a dollar organic milk 🥛 for $.70 cent a liter and organic eggs 🥚 for .25 cents a piece, life is great and plentiful of outdoor activéis. One thing to notice, is really expensive getting McDonalds, Taco Bell, Bebe ether king than eating in a restaurant that serves organic food. If $1000 spuds cheap to you try living in the surrounding of Cuenca, sick is Azogues, Paute, Biblian, Girón, etc etc will blow your mind, $500 or less.
Jose... Are you an expat, tourist, resident, or born n raised Ecuadorian? Is that a small apt. or hotel/resort set-up? I’m hoping to travel some time this year. I’m Ecuatoriano born and raised in Chicago. And when I go to Quito I avoid any and all eateries with US names. I always eat real street food. Mercado foods are the best too. Nothing like being in Ecuador and enjoying a round pan de agua w a Coke.
Great video! Thanks for sharing. Just wondering if your guest in the video is planning to continue traveling now that she's settled in Cuenca (post Covid)? Can you comment on how easy it is or how often expats travel from Cuenca, domestically and internationally to Europe/Asia? (Thinking of costs, connecting flights) Than you!
As you can guess travel currently is a little tricky with each country having their own requirements. This said, she actually is scheduled to visit Egypt in a few months with some friends she’s made in Cuenca. You can look up flights from Ecuador on Skyscanner.com Guayaquil and Quito are the two international airports here, with Guayaquil the closer of the two. Cuenca has regional airport for a short flight to Guayaquil or Quito if needed.
Thanks for the vlog That's my exact early retirement benefits or wait another 3 1/2 years to receive full benefits of around$1500....... However feeling sad without having proper saving after 35 years of non stop working have to shop for another country that can accommodate my remaining years!!
mark yes you can , you can get a nice place for $ 350 and new .I am a local middle class here and I used to live in the states ...my advace come and see it for your self
She actually left her apartment to travel and returns to Cuenca regularly for 90 days at a time. She was recently volunteering teaching English in Cuenca at a school. We are working on doing an update with her in the near future.
Wow I just spoke with someone just a week ago in the USA while riding a Uber and he told me about Cuenca Ecuador and that’s why I am on here checking it out. To the interviewers and the interviewee can I speak with you all?

I am in love with videos about Cuenca but am very noise sensitive in general as well as a light sleeper. If soundproofing and double windows were a more normative feature, that would be perfect!
You can even live in sweden in apartments and rowhouses in small places outside small towns. For 300-500 dollars for rent and usaly incl warm water, radiator heat, sometimes internet and tv are incl and if not 25-50 dollars if you must pay for it, usaly only electricity that you pay for and thats usaly 30-60 dollars. Food is about 400-500 dollars a month. Sizes on apartments are from 30-90 square meters/90-270 square feet
@@WarrenJulieTravel how much does she invest?? 1,000 usd per month perhaps that goes to cover basic needs to survive.... Or does she actually invest Serious money in my country and create jobs and wealth for Ecuador. We ecuadorians are not all naive or ignorant.... Most retirees come here to live cheap and give the country nothing in return. The investment is a joke.....
@@maryoriezambrano7690 you are obviously uneducated on economics. There are about 10,000 Expats in Azuay with most concentrated in Cuenca spending $250,000,000 a year to landlords, taxis, restaurants, Mercados, Tiendas, Entertainment, veterinarians etc which provides jobs and income to Ecuadorians. This in new money brought into Azuay added to sustain the economy of Cuenca and its people. Nobody is here taking anything for free, expats come and contribute economically and many donate to charity and volunteer. I’m not sure where your negativity comes from, most Ecuadorians that make comments are very positive and encouraging, understanding expats and tourism means jobs.
@@maryoriezambrano7690 the focus of the video is the cost of living in Cuenca not her investment portfolio, regardles passive aggressive comments only harm the image perceived by outsiers. Maybe keep that in mind If you really are worried about FDI.
@@maryoriezambrano7690 The retirees didn’t set up the requirements. Your government did. I’m sure they did what they thought would be beneficial to the local economy. If not, they are free to change their requirements at any time.
That was a very interesting and informative video. I will be visiting the end of January and we'll explore around that area. Where did you say you play disc golf? I'm going to bring a couple discs with me. Thank you!
Wow! An amazing apt. and we applaud Kay for her quality of life on a budget. This is what I expect to pay for a condo or apt. in P.V. Mex. and doubt I'll get as nice a place as she's found. I see that my wife watches this video later too.
Hi Warren & Julie! Thank you so much for the great info! I respectfully request that you turn up the volume on your recording devices, as I have difficulty hearing everything that is being said on this video. And please, keep up the great work!
We hear comments like this on occasion, however others do not encounter the same issues. We believe it may be device driven, we do try to check the sound quality before uploading. My apologies, hopefully our other videos sound clearly. 😁
I love Ecuador and have recently moved here. I'm wondering about the insurance. That's a much better deal than what I've found. I realize this was 3 years ago but it's half the price I'm paying. Plus my deductible makes it unusable.
I have lived in multiple other countries. This condo is Top 5 I have ever seen or heard of in value and accommodation. You will be hard pressed to do better than this even in KLCC. A++
Third world country? Really? I know you used air quotes but I’m surprised you’d use that term for Ecuador, especially Cuenca. I do like your videos, the apartment is gorgeous.
I use the term with air quotes to get people to rethink the term. Most people consider most countries in Central and South America to fall into that description. Via video I hope people change those perceptions. 👍♥️🇪🇨
@@WarrenJulieTravel OK, thanks. I"m moving to Cuenca and arriving on Thursday. I already have a very nice apartment but it's not quite as nice as Kay's. I love the city and am excited to start my retirement expat life there. Your videos have been very helpful in ideas for day trips.
Yes it's a third world country, it's on the top 8 corrupted countries in Latin America, Cuenca is a safe city with nice people that's why Americans choose that city, go to the slums in Guayaquil or Quito and you'll see why its a third world country.
Indeed, Ecuador is dirt cheap in regards to food, obviously without counting expensive restaurants, and the price for the apartment is spot on considering that's inside a residency building, u can rent apartments/houses for around $300 a month, so the price can actually go less than $1000 if u want. And for the record, Cuenca is not that dangerous compared to other cities like Guayaquil for example, so it's safe to say that overall it's more pacific, and as pointed out in the video, ppl over there like to hang out and party, drunk ppl can be an issue depending on where u at in Cuenca. Greetings from Guayaquil, great vid!
Fantastic video! Did I hear "pickleball"? My wife and I will be in Cuenca in late August and will be sure to bring our paddles along! How do we get in touch with Kay for a quick pickleball game? ;-)
Wow, she really got herself a great apartment!! Tell her to buy a hummingbird feeder with a bee guard. She should really take down the one she's got. A bee sting could kill a hummingbird and I know that she doesn't want that. Thanks for posting this! Happy trails!
Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you have anyone that has had to ‘use’ their medical insurance in Ecuador? One of the most frustrating things about the US is the fear of the unknown once you try to use your insurance and start dealing with networks, copays, deductibles, and ultimately uncovered costs. Do you think there are any expats that you know that would be willing to discuss their interaction with the national insurance as well as the private insurance...for example, a stent, bypass, emergency surgery, trauma, etc. I speak as a physician in the US for many years in various types of practices to include ER and inner city family practice. I also practiced in rural Canada for two years. Anyhow, I would love to hear from people who had to negotiate the system for non-elective issues. Thanks for your good work.
Yes, we have had friends use their insurance for a large event. They have had to deal with justification for the reimbursement but over all they are satisfied with their results. The couple in our $2,000 video speaks briefly on this. I'll be visiting with one of the most popular medical programs here tomorrow, I'll have a video out soon. Thanks for watching and asking questions.
I can five you info since I haved lived in Ecuador for 7 years. Gov health insurance is called IESS about $70/ month. There are local as well as national private ins companies from $200/ person to $30. Dentists are good and avery cheap.
@@joserivera7349 Great info Jose. Key thing with me is that even if it costs me more money, I want to have a situation where the hospital can be paid directly by the insurance company. Not interested in the pay up front, then hope for reimbursement thing. If you have any knowledge on if this is possible in Ecuador, please share. I know insurance companies that have relationships with certain hospitals that do this in Mexico, but really like the idea of moving to Ecuador.
Most areas of Cuenca are walkable, taxis are cheap $1.50-$2.50 each way, busses and Tranvia .30. Popular as mentioned is a grocery store, and there is no mail service, DHL or Fed Ex are options.
@@WarrenJulieTravel I recommend Laarbox (courier). They give you your mailbox in Miami and your packages are left in Ecuador at your door; and it is much cheaper than DHL or Fed Ex. The shipping cost is $ 11 per pound, but if its weight is greater the shipping cost is less. Here is the link: www.laarbox.com/preguntas
Everything is cheap. The supermarkets are very close. I am equatorian and live un Cuenca. I don't like public tranpostation. I allways use an application like Uber call. Azutaxi. 👍
