Cullen surprised us. And it wasn't just the soup.

It's a train and a bus (and a lot of hours) to get from Montrose to the wee village of Cullen on Scotland's North East coast (thankfully a bit before the area was hit by some pretty severe winter weather!). We have never stopped here before and the place was quite surprising to be honest. After building up an appetite with a wander around town, we ended up in the Rockpool Café sampling the famous local soup. I think you'll see by the thumbnail and title that we quite liked it! We also really enjoyed the journey to get here (especially the bus bit) and there's definitely some unfinished business in this corner of Scotland. We will be back for sure.

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

This is now my neck of the woods. A retired Brummie who now lives between Forres and Elgin, the 35 bus has been a regular day out for me for the last few years visiting all those wonderful little villages from Portgorden onward. Cullen is especially beautiful and yes, you need to return to take in the view from Castle Hill and visit the Kirk, so much history. The organs of the wife of Robert the Bruce were buried there after her death and Robert was so grateful he made an annual payment to the village in gratitude for the treatment of his wife's body and it's return south for burial. Apparently, this sum is still paid although the government challenged it in 2000 and the subsequent enquiry was settled in the village's favour! By the way, the bus driver on your return journey was Charlie, he's a bit of a local character, always ready for a chat and very supportive of his passages, he's also a staunch Liverpool fan but I don't hold that against him!

While I was born in Montrose and lived in Brechin, my Grandparents lived in Buckie so we would always visit them in the holidays. Love Cullen Skink as well as visiting all the little fishing villages. Findochty is actually pronounced "Finechty" by the locals! Bowfiddle rock is amazing to see in Portknockie. We would travel to Buckie from Montrose over the Cairn o' Mount road (you'll need to do that in the van some time!) I'm in Australia now and these videos are great reminders! That soup looked the business, nice find Café too, looked a perfect day without any tourists, temps have been crazy lately, was showing -9 here in Ayrshire last week, I was 2 long buses up to visit my old mum last Thursday and 2 long buses home cos of the rail strikes, I was only home about an hour and started hearing water, yip burst pipe behind the ceiling in my downstairs toilet, a little bit of luck that I was in and was able too turn off the water and electrics as it was pouring through the light fitting, heard some area gossip a few nearby had the same issue but sadly the damage was more severe, been in this house since 2001 - burst pipe is a first. Massive Thanks again and hope you and the Mrs have a nice Xmas, not really my time of the year IBH. Cheers!

We had a great time in Cullen, as part of our two-week northeast Scotland trip this past May. We enjoyed walking in the old and "new" parts of town, including coastal trails, streets, and hillside restaurants. Keep making your fun and interesting videos. You should visit South Padre Island some cool week in winter--lots of birds, a great beach, plenty of restaurants, and even a tram to get around the fairly compact (for Texas) town.

You just walked through my childhood Steve. The rocks you found on the beach are called the Three Kings. There's a pub named after them just under the viaduct (or at least there were). If you had the time to keep on walking past the Pet Cemetery you come to Findlater Castle, eventually and pass some impressive coves on route. So funny to see Buckie, Findochty and I think I glimpsed Huntly from the Train. Living in England I took my now wife many a time to the beaches on the NE. Making us both yearn to move up there (again for me) one day. Thanks again for the memories Steve.

A bit of forward planning for a bowl of soup is awesome! I love Cullen Skink and make it a couple of times a year, make sure you use un-dyed haddock tho…. Baxters make a Cullen Skink soup but at nearly £3 a tin its a luxury and not an everyday option. A 10 hour round trip is a bit on the bonkers side for a bowl of soup BUT what really made it worth it was the ramble round Cullen, super and well done on bringing this gem to our screens…. great mate

Best Cullen Skink in my travels was at the Basil Harbour Cafe in Nairn. Reviews are pretty good too. It's a quaint, diner-style restaurant on a wee harbour by the sea. A side of bread, preferably a fresh crusty bread is recommended. Tip - leeks are a key ingredient to this soup, vs. onions. Thanks for another excellent scenic video, Steve & Alicja. Incidentally, the name Cullen Skink harks back to the auld days when it was made from shin ('skink') of beef.

i’m not a fish fan but it’s hearty and probably tastes amazing, soups, stews, porridges, and meat pies are what Scotts do best! and the boat light decoration is ingenious- honestly never seen that design before, just trees, canes, stars, and bulbs. and the stone forecaster? some jokes are universal 😂🤣

That was lovely! There’s a wee restaurant in Auchmithie that’s called the Butt n Ben and they make the most amazing Cullen skink. As you know that’s where the Arbroath smokey comes from.

Another great video, Steve, to brighten up a dull, snowy day outside. Weather was beautiful and I didn't realise that Cullen has so many gems. Worth another longer visit on our next journey north from the central belt. Keep the videos coming. Bob

Great video Steve. My daughter and I were at the Bow and Fiddle the other day and there were two fat seals on the beach at Portgordon. When you return please visit Pennan and re-enact a few scenes from my favourite film Local Hero. Beach from the film is amazing too but a bit of a walk to Camusdarach!!

Hi guys, as a great lover of fresh smoked fish I usually stock up with smoked haddock whenever I'm in Whitby (I live in London where fish is both expensive and not abundant), and I was surprised to hear from the fishmonger that all his fresh unsmoked haddock comes from Norway, evidently the UK fishing fleet has dwindled to virtually nothing!

One of my favourite things ever (Cullen Skink)… I’ve never been to Cullen, but the best I ever had was in Glamis Castle…
