Hey kids! On Weekend Wankshop 155, Uncle Ben here is gonna give you all a sweet free lesson on how to play the main riffs from Cult Of Personality by Living Color! I see lessons and transcriptions all the time on how to play Vernon Reid's guitar parts in this song, and i'm afraid to report that they're mostly fake news.... there's no open strings used in this riff at all, and there are some really awkward positions and fingerings that you've got to use because of that.
There's a brief lesson Vernon did a while back floating around on RU-vid where he gives a quick rundown on how to play the main runs of the song, but i wanted to give you guys something a little more in depth . hopefully this will help you nail this classic tune!
Playing my Fallout finish Ibanez RG550 with Instrumental Pickups into my Kemper Profiler.
Thanks for watching, be sure to like and subscribe!

Good jerb unca Ben. I've got a crap transcription of this song somewhere and never really took the time to dig into the song and learn it the "correct" way. "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" is another great tune of theirs that's fun to play and improv over. Love the rhythms in that one. 🤘🏼

Vernon Reid. This came out when I was a teenager and at the time I listened to Bad Brains religiously and Dr. Know was writing amazing shit. When I saw Cult for the first time I caught that same guitar high. Man I wish I had a guitar with a tremolo bar. It is almost Christmas.....

Man, excellent catch on the D. I remember the just about all of the transcriptions at the time in the guitar mags had that open D on the 4th string, but Guitar for the Practicing Musician correctly (we now know) had the D on the 5th. It was so much more difficult to play smoothly that I refused to believe it - but you can't run from the truth. Goddamn it, you can't run from the truth.

I worked on this a while back and gave up on it. It sounds pretty basic but in the key of G it just wasn't working for me. But after watching your video I was able to finally get it. Thanks! The key for me seemed to be letting the wrist move a bit as you move that first finger back and forth on the D string rather than just trying to do it purely as a finger move. Maybe good players know this intuitively but I had to sort of stumble into it. Really glad to add this to my riff collection at long last.
@santinochavez8149

This riff definitely sounds better with closed frets. I initially learned it with open strings, which was challenging in itself, but I’m glad I learned how to play it this way. As far as the finger placement, I think the best thing is to find a way that works for you. The way Vernon plays it is just too awkward for me. That jump to the 2nd fret on the D string throws me off. I play it similar to your way, except I don’t deviate from playing the 3rd fret on the low E with my middle finger. Regardless, I think this is a great tutorial for anyone trying to learn this riff.

I've been sitting here getting this up to speed with the pinky crossover thing on the second lick. It's a little tricky, but once you get it, you got it, and it sounds good with a dooby and a lotta slapback.

That is the exact way it was transcribed in Guitar for the Practicing Musician in the November 1989 issue when the song came out back when magazines were how we all learned songs. That is exactly how my band played it back in 1992 and I have always played it for last 30+ years.

On Monday I bought a Jackson Dinky and found out the saddle was stripped so I returned it to GC and for a 100 dollars more got an RG470. The Ibanez is way better quality and the stock pickups sound way better and it feels great too. The only thing I don't like is the Autumn Fade finish but I want to do something like your guitars anyway.
