The language of fanatics can range from irritatingly benign (your colleague gets a Peloton and won’t stop talking about Power Zones) to downright alarming (your conspiracy-loving high school friend starts posting “we are the storm” on Facebook). In her new book Cultish, linguist Amanda Montell argues that the key to creating extreme ideology and community, regardless of motive, comes down to language. Join us for a discussion of the language that influences us to join and remain in groups from SoulCycle to Scientology.
This program was presented via Zoom on Wednesday, December 1, 2021.

Thanks for sharing this interview! I really enjoyed the book and thought it was such a helpful way to think about some trends revealed in our modern society that at times feel unfathomable, as she cited. Awareness is the first step to compassion and empathy. I only wish her audio was a bit clearer! The author was very quiet relative to the interviewer.

22:26 … My favorite (read: pet peeve) “thought terminating cliche” is “hater.” When I hear it I’m always stuck wondering why it’s said, who’s saying it and who they’re directing it toward. It always just felt like a coping mechanism or as a sort of excuse. The term “thought terminating cliche” I think sums it up nicely. Thank you for teaching me that.

Everyday we encounter more evil, manipulative and controlling people....as a teacher and father, I fear for the unaware. A former student's husband just contacted me, infoming me she just got "sucked in" by scientology and left him.....maried only two years. She's in the blue building in LA now, all info controlled, etc etc. Looks like scientology is starting to crumble simply from truth escaping due to internet: She will rue the day she did this.

but the difference is, that this is a well-defined subject specific jargon. Nothing devious. If you meant it light heartedly, that's funny :)
