The Garden Giant is a stellar species for folks to grow in their backyard, and especially in their gardens. This species is plant friendly, helps transform woodchips into rich soils, consumes nematodes and filters out E. coli. Garden Giants produce long, abundant rhizomorphs, and the stem butts can regrow. See Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World for step by step instructions.
Once you have this species (Stropharia rugoso-annulata, aka The Wine Cap, The King Stropharia) growing on your property and if you annually use wood chips as a mulch, the Garden Giant can become resident for years. Not only are the mushrooms huge (see the 4-5 lb specimens in the photos), and edible (mild flavor), but this species can produce acanthocytes - which allow it to eat nematodes, important for protecting root crops.
Acanthocytes of Stropharia rugosoannulata Function as a Nematode-Attacking DeviceAPPLIED AND ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, Apr. 2006, p. 2982-2987 Vol. 72, No. 4
0099-2240/06/$08.000 doi:10.1128/AEM.72.4.2982-2987.2006
We also published on this species removing E. coli. See my bio at paustamets.com
Moreover, this mushroom will distract slugs from eating your vegetables, and fly larvae love them. I discovered when raising sliver (coho) salmon fingerlings that the fish would strike at the floating maggot-ridden mushrooms to dislodge the larvae and aggressively consume them. So, this suggests that this species could be useful for feeding fish, from salmon to tilapia.
Also, see my YT video on MycoTotes - for the massive expansion of mycelium using a low tech fermentation method.
Crazy fun with fungi.

I was severely traumatized years ago as a teenage, got diagnosed with ADHD. Also suffered severe anxiety and mental disorder. Spent my whole life fighting ADHD. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

I live in Denton, TX. Just found some Reishi's (Lingzhi, Ganoderma lingzhi) growing under my Shumard Red Oak tree in the back yard. They were quite tough, so, I made several batches of Reishi tea (for me), then made a syrup supplement using the tea, old honey (turned to sugar) and cane sugar to feed some wild bees that visit my patio garden. They LOVED it! I'm a 4 time cancer survivor (2 lung and 2 breast) and plan to keep treating myself to mushrooms.

@Mel Hawk No Mel I don't know. But it was a combination of several fungus .It was in Washington State and I think that you might be able to find the information from Paul Stamets .This was done years ago and I believe that he would have the information on it. The mushrooms were made into balls and spread out on the ground and the weather had a reaction to release the spores and they transformed the pollution into a element that was non toxic and harmless. It took a while to break down the chemicals and the minerals that were there. I don't know the exact details. I believe that this process was in Bellingham Washington.

Introducing a non-native fungus to fix a non-native problem could be more destructive than the problem you want to fix. Maybe wait and see what that environment is doing to fix itself and help it along. Stopping the polluting activities is best.

Is it prone to picking up flavours like other weak tasting mushrooms? Will that have a hint of rosemary? Edit: nice knife skills. Looking like a ninja

These wine caps are so beautiful! It's like the classic fairytale mushroom look. Gotta start growing these, they would look so spectacular in a gift basket! Just gorgeous. 👌

Thanks so much for your work man! It took me until this season to go from looking at beautiful wild growths to actually foraging them and discovering that there are about 10 fold eddible to what I thought prior to starting this journey. We ate LBS from just behind my house this year and enjoy every minute that this journey has been fruiting for us. Im about to start my very first agar plate to attempt to iso a healthy myco of the BEE plus strain lol!

After your first appearance on JRE my interest in and love of hunting wild mushrooms grew, beyond the spring morels and fall puff ball hunting taught to me by my father. That realization there is almost always a wild mushroom to be found, no matter the season, was a mind blowing eye opener. Fungus is the most fascinating! Thank you Paul for all your amazing work, and passing on your incredible passion to countless folks like me. 💕
