I feel like we need to embrace our own heritage and culture (including white people, too.) and maybe even appreciate everyone else’s culture. We shouldn’t separate ourselves from everyone else just because of our ethnicity. More likely than not, there would be something within a culture that originated from another culture.

So many other races don't understand the meaning of being a Native American. We Native Americans have many cultural beliefs and we have our own traditions/teachings that have been passed down from our ancestors. To us these pieces of clothing that big companies use are sacred to us, just have more respect of our beliefs. It's not that were saying all the companies are intending to be disrespectful. Me personally don't have a problem but i know my grandma would be very disrespected by it. You people who are saying since were "complaining" about a piece of clothing not to wear "American" clothes is very annoying because you really have to get our cultural side and than you will understand. We don't just get mad to get mad about it, we just have very strong Native beliefs an you wouldn't know if you weren't Native American. Just understand that some of us Native Americans don't like when a different race wears our traditional piece attire because we feel disrespected, just like how other races have their traditional ways that we respect, we have ours.
@artisticagi
@artisticagi 7 лет назад
no they dont. western society has been dumbed down tremendously. people whose cultural background is football on sunday nights are def gonna have a hard time being able to understand or respect it. i am not native american, i come from a small tribe in nigeria but seeing what i have of native american spiritual beliefs has given me a lot of respect for it. i hope yall protect because it is bothersome how they treat native americans like some kind of cultural artifact. dont let them put you in the museums.
@shiannafoxx

cydni taliman I think if you're gonna wear somebody else's culture, then at least know the meaning behind it. For example, I'm African and Native American. I have a lot of African print items in my house and a dreamcatcher hanging above my bed. Alongside with that I also have a dreamcatcher necklace. Even though those are my and my ancestors cultures, I still know the meanings behind them.
@butterballs9206

Dana Co lol but I've never met anyone that thinks like that? Kylie Jenner is some dumb basic hoe not edgy? I know white people who have dreads and I don't see the issue? Because really, it is just a way of styling your hair. Saying one race *CANT* do something because of their race seems a little dodgy don't you think. Also a school expelling someone for wearing dreads or cornrows is stupid no matter their race. The meaning behind these things shouldn't be held so dearly, it's not like I'm gonna say "hEy black people can't use **technology invented by white person** because a white person invented it and honestly they're stealing our culture????" YOU'RE talking about double standards AHhaha what a hypocrite you are. Also I don't have fragile feelings, I'm pretty impossible to be offended actually like I cannot remember the last time someone genuinely hurt me. I just don't give a shit about what people think of me!

I'm a Filipino-Chinese-Spanish girl. I never learned to speak chinese, I can speak broken spanish (chavavano) and can barely speak tagalog. Growing up, I was never taught about my cultures. Yes I saw flashes from here to there, wore things sometimes but never to the point I'd known a lot about it. I'm now learning Chinese and attending a school that teaches tagalog, filipino culture. What I can say is, never shy away from your culture; be happy you are part diverse and part of something so beautiful.

I am laughing at how dumb some of these comments are. First of all do you people not understand the difference between culture and race? 😂 okay sure they do play a part in culture but there is still a difference. For example: White pride is racist. There is no such thing as white culture. But European culture is real- In fact it is a mix of hundreds of different cultures. So do not dismiss them as if they don’t mean shit just because you can’t tell the difference between “white culture” and European culture. European culture is a generalisation itself. Because there are MANY countries and cultures that are in Europe. Need a list? Spanish culture, French culture, German culture, British culture, Italian culture, Greek culture, Dutch culture, need me to go on? ALL CULTURES DESERVE RESPECT SO DON’T DISMISS ARE WHOLE CONTINENT OF THEM BECAUSE YOU CANT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RACISM AND CULTURE APPRECIATION
@alex.profi27

White pride is racist but black pride isn t?😂 The hypocrisy I m proud to be white Why shouldn t i?! As well as many black people are proud to be black
@lilliec6083
@lilliec6083 4 года назад
@@alex.profi27 I mean it's very different to have white pride compared to having black pride. What are you proud of when it comes to your whiteness? Why be proud of something you didn't have to push through or accomplish? Black people have persevered through heavy discrimination, multiple glass ceilings, and ignorance. But white people? They haven't done anything to persevere through racial discrimination because historically there is none affecting them. Being proud to be white means nothing. But I am proud to be Scottish, Saami, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. I am not proud to be white. I recognize the privilege I have and what my ancestors did because of their whiteness. But I am proud of my heritage, because it is not about race, it's about culture, strength, and things I can take ownership of. Instead of being proud of something you did nothing to accomplish- being white- be proud of your ethnic heritage. There, you can find much more to accomplish and take pride in:)

@@taesty7374 This is what I don't understand... yes, everyone has their own culture and should feel proud of that. People fight for their culture and get upset when others appropriate it (rightfully so). In this video, the latino girl speaks about her culture yet has an Om tattoo (2: 46). I could easily say that I personally feel that she is appropriating my culture... but then everyone will say, she can do whatever she wants too, maybe she's hindu/ buddhist, etc. I feel like everyone claims cultural appropriation when it's convenient for them. I feel like theres a gray area for certain stuff, like an Om. If it's my culture and it matters to me but not to you, why isn't it considered cultural appropriation? This video is amazing and so important. Everyone should be proud of their background and culture no matter their skin tone, no one should be judged based on how they look or the choices they make feeling connected to who you are is so important. I personally think it is fine for people to wear for example braids if that doesn't stem from their own culture as long as they have an understanding of the origin and the culture it belongs to and wears it not to look like Kim Kardashian or whatever. As long as someone understands and respects it's culture and origin then I see nothing wrong with it. Most of cultural appropriation is at the fault of society and social media who find it okay to deem these such things "trends" and not include any actual information about the meaning or origin of these "trends". And if someone doesn't know that there is a culture associated with their hairstyle or whatever they are wearing I'm 99% sure that if you approached them kindly, calmly, and respectfully they would be more than happy to allow you to educate them properly. People have the right to be sensitive on this topic because everyone has been through so much when it comes to being criticized for their culture and appearance but all of this fighting with one another is going to far in some cases.

Like the Caucasian girl who wore an Eastern-style dress and she got backlash saying "My culture is NOT your prom dress!" or something like that. Why can't we all just appreciate that people like our culture(whatever culture it is)and imitate it because they find it beautiful,not because they want to mock it or anything?

I feel like culture and race/ethnicity are being used interchangeably more and more today. like sexuality and gender, the two issues are totally separate. example: if someone is 100% Han Chinese and was born and raised in America in a household that tried to rid them of traditional Chinese cultural practises, they are not a part of Chinese culture and have no claim to it. If another non Han Chinese person was adopted by a Chinese family and grew up surrounded by the language and traditional practises, they are 100% attached to that culture and have full claim to it. they are technically more Chinese than the Biologically Central Asian counterpart. this is not so much a comment on the video but on some of the comments. Additionally, I would not care if people wanted to appropriate my culture, if anything I'd encourage it. that's the way cultures have always developed and improved. the only boundary would be if it linked with religion or spirituality. that is a no go zone.

Jasmine Gulliver actually you're wrong, just because someone doesn't fit your definition of what it means to be Han Chinese,puerto Rican etc. doesn't mean they aren't what what they are, in Puerto Rican I was born there and I lived there for a large part of my life now I live in America does that suddenly mean I no longer have rights to my culture?
@mandy-8015
@mandy-8015 7 лет назад
You have lived in Puerto Rico for a large part of your life (at least, that's what I can derive from your comment), while Jasmine Gulliver talks about someone who was BORN AND RAISED in a household that does not do any of the Chinese cultural practices. Major difference there, don't you think?

Messyxme I couldn't log onto my old account but I am Jasmine Gulliver. I rewatched the video by chance so that is why I'm commenting now. I however would have said the same thing as the person who replied to you earlier. you grew up in Puerto Rico and moved to America, now both cultures are intrinsically a part of you. I was born in Indonesia and have an Indonesian mother and spent my early childhood there amongst the culture. I moved to Australia when I was 10 and continue to live here some 9 years later. Australian culture is therefore my culture too. if I picked up and moved to Argentina tomorrow and lived there for a few years, I would naturally adopt the culture, and that culture would also be a part of me. all of this is because of community and not of birthright or genetics since culture is socially constructed and not embedded in our DNA. sorry for the very late reply. I kind of forgot about this post.

Whenever I hear anything about America, I always think that what is america's culture. I mean the traditional clothes and all that stuff? That's the reason i like native Americans more than Americans. And I'm not even an American but feel kinda proud that they have their own culture😄❤️I think its all about an Indian mind.becoz we have so many traditions, culture etc.

If someone wears Native American jewellery they aren't appropriating Native American culture they are embracing Native American culture. It would only be cultural appropriation if they denied its Native American cultural significance or passed it off as being non-Native American.

Nicole N Debutante my ethnicity and tribal affiliations are none of your concern. I won't be patronised by whites. Anyone who pays even the slightest amount of attention to Native issues would know full well that Natives are much more concerned with the problems of corruption, drug abuse, poverty, unemployment in Native communities than they are about young dumb whites wearing headdresses at festivals. Publications like Vogue, BuzzFeed and Vox love to feign concern over trivial issues of whites dressing up as natives but don't care in the slightest for the real issues that we face in Native and Aboriginal communities all over the Americas.

Does it not feel wrong that we never have white people talking about racism towards white people? It's beautiful to everyone else talking about their skin and culture but it's wrong to be proud of who you are if you're white. Everyone's culture is beautiful and every skin tone and everything that makes you different no matter what's race. Find beauty in everything.
