Me in the 80's: wow i can't wait to see what amazing things will be happening in the 21st century! My children in 2024: dad, can we go to the 80s please!
Boy George is probably the most under appreciated singer from the 80s, and he was masterful in front of the camera in all his videos with his dance moves, eye contact and hand movements. This track is arguably one of their finest - just a perfect storm of George's vocals, the motown infused sound, harmonica intro, Helen Terry's amazing backing voice, and a video that is pure art - such an uplifting song from a group that was ahead of its time.
I understand what you mean by him being underappreciated but still he became extremely famous and lasted the test of time. Boy George is now legendary status.
Yes, very handsome - and it's amazing that he was able to take on this gender-bending look in such a powerful way at a time when there was still a lot of violence and mistrust against gay people in England, and when AIDS was steamrolling through the news.
I think his SINGING OVERSHADOWED his appearance. Where I was (Seattle), once he opened his mouth to sing, his appearance became a "non-issue", it didn't matter anymore.
Dave B Boy George was doubly blessed. A world class set of vocal chords paired with a bit of genius for songwriting. One of the most gifted talents I can think of.
Eugene Ward,Jr. you wont believe this but i just finished watching an eposide of the a-team and boy george and culture club starred on it. george also had ryathm. he did nice simple dance moves but you could tell he had rythem. you could tell that george and george micheals definitly hung around a lot of blacks. george was a great writter.
Helen Terry had an Aretha Franklin voice. She was so good. If you listen to "Black Money", you will understand my reference. Rest in peace, Miss Aretha Franklin!
+Ruben Delgadillo Yep. They were wizards combining American R & B, Reggae, and Punk Rock & New Wave. I'd like to see Janet Jackson, New Edition, Chic, and even Olivia Newton John who has never been Nominated.
Ringo never had the same status that the other Three did. He hardly wrote or Sang, and he didn't create the first Benefit Concert. To many people he was just the guy who was in the right place at the right time. There are so many folks who have yet to be Inducted like Chic. To many they were just a Disco Group but they did so much. They were Songwriters, Producers, and they allowed their Music to be used for the First Rap Record.
Respect to George for giving the amazing Helen Terry her fair share of time in the spotlight and credit for her considerable contribution to many of the band's hits in official videos and stage performances. The two harmonised very nicely together and he clearly genuinely appreciated her as a great artist in her own right.
I just listened to this video side by side with a current tour performance (7-28-23), it's AMAZING the difference Helen makes! The song sounds so much BETTER with her on it!🎶🎶
I saw Boy George on his first tour...Tower Theatre...Philadelphia...very front row...Philadelphia is an extremely tough rock and roll city...they will boo you off stage in a. New York City minute..in 1982 he was so controversial...so was Bowie in 1972 in Philadelphia...he rocked it out of the park
Philadelphia always and forever will greet new bands with an open mind..In 1967...Hendrix played on Sampson Street in Philadelphia..right below the park...he kicked the shit out of it..Philadelphia always loved " left of center bands"
@@robertsears3737 Philly sounds like a great "music city"! I remember Culture Club (George) was a hit here too, in the 80's! Hendrix was also an early HIT here, I remember my neighbor, who was still in grade school in 1965 (as I was), got a Hendrix album and was absolutely thrilled. (In Seattle Jimi Hendrix was also our "homeboy".)
Never understood why she was never officially part of the band. Helen's voice popped up in enough Culture Club songs, she was pretty present in videos and appearances and her singing was (sorry Boy George fans) more soulful.
Love the 80s...Do any of you remember when (in the days of MTV--before Internet) we used to have to stay up late to see the world premier of videos like this!?! Those were magical times.... ;)
OMG YES....... the 70's and 80's were ELECTRIC MAGIC.... clubs on every block blasting dance music... you'd dance your ass off in one club... then walk to the next club and cool off between clubs.... now you're lucky if you ever SEE a club unless you're in new york, paris, LA or vegas...and even those are NOTHING like they were in the 80's......
I live forever in the 1980s! I was shopping recently--and I swear the new clothes look like they are bringing back the 80s style! LOL! What is old is new again! And this music still can be heard in shopping malls!
I hear ya….we didn’t realize how good the music was @ that time because it was just expected…So many great bands, so much diversity. I’m the kinda person who can listen to Culture Club one minute and the next pop on Slayer for example. Seems like no one even plays instruments today..? Just curious what year u were born so I have an idea what you grew up with. I’m born 75.
Music isn’t quite as good as it was in the’70’s-90’s eras that’s for sure!! If you live in Ontario Canada thank god for the station boom radio from Toronto!! Even if you aren’t you can still listen through those radio players. Definitely worth checking out!!
My Nan was a real old school Irish Catholic woman, we had to go to church every Sunday as kids I loved it when this song came out on the radio , she’d turn it down though! 😂 If she could hear todays music 💀😂
Low budget music videos, awesome choreographed dancing, harmonicas, saxophones, violins, synthesizers and harmonizing soothing God gifted vocals . 80's music is the greatest era of music in my 50 year old lifetime . Does anyone else agree?
They were huge back in the day but their legacy is dismissed out of hand. They were highly original with deep undertones. They were one of the few bands who defined that era- as short lived as it was. I was in my senior year in high school when they broke out. And they caused quite a sensation. They deserve a better spot in pop music history.
@@danityvanityinsanityThere is a film about Culture Club (ok, mainly about Boy) called Worried About The Boy made for BBC TV. It's not that great but it's better than nothing. It's probably somewhere on RU-vid. Apparently they were working on a new one in early 2020 but we all know what happened in 2020, and I haven't heard anything about it since then, so I don't know if that's still happening, but don't hold your breath.
It’s too bad that Boy George had to start using drugs. That certainly limited the shelf life of Culture Club’s career. If he had stayed clean I’m sure the hits would have kept on coming.
Culture Club is a hall of fame band. They need a biopic movie like queen. They will have a new legion of fans that love them as much as i do.Phenomenal band.
It wasn't a studio film like Bohemian Rhapsody, but they had a television movie, Worried About the Boy, that was made maybe a decade ago. Still one of my favorite bio pics and the first movie I downloaded way back then (feels like ancient times now).
Believe me I have dozens of C.C. records, but in truth they only had one exceptional album (C.B.N) and one good album (K.T.B.C). However I feel Don't mind if I do was very underrated and their third best although George didn't feel it was very good. Less than perfect really is perfect!
Culture club and boy George put out hits. Way before their time. They don't get the credit they deserve. I still rock these songs in 2022. I remember watching MTV. Background in the day. Love the videos. Sure miss those days 😁
Sylvan De La Cruz: Very true about Boy George being ahead of his time. I remember one day I said to my mother how meaningful I realized the song "Karma Chameleon," was/is, because, as a younger person, I only liked it because it was a catchy tune. But then as I got older and listened to the lyrics I learned the true depth of the song's message. My mother said to me, "Didn't you realize that, from the beginning?"
BG stood out from the crowd for his fantastic vocals, great grooves, originality, and unapologetic gayness at a time when that would subject him to endless hate and ridicule. He's a true brave pioneer.
It is my uttermost pleasure seeing your amazing and pleasant comment on my movie channel. 😍This really brought great joy to my heart, remain blessed. I know you will be shock Seeing my mail, that to show you how grateful I’m. feel free to contact me anytime..
These blokes were quite really ahead of their time with their dubious sexuality and not making a big fuss about it like today's freaks. Miss the 80s so much.
Absolutely agree no one cared about a person's preference then. Now everyone has a cause or hang up it's gone beyond stupid. Back then creativity was celebrated and we all had fun.
Absolutely, the effortless look of this video, shot at a time when there was still a great deal of homophobia in the UK and the dread of AIDS was all over the place...just amazing!
Me too!!! The 80’s were timeless, I wish I could go back even if it’s only and hour, but that wouldn’t be enough time!! lol I do remember no one in the 80’s made rude comments or even minded that he was gay!! That’s why the 80’s were so great we didn’t care who or what you are or who you were. I wish people would be more like that now!! Remember we did hands across America and live aid!! I think our minds were on more important issues then was sex you identify with!!! If you lived in the 80’s you know what a great life we had!!!! I miss it
Saw Culture Club September 11, 1983 at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO. My daughter was 11 at the time and I was without a vehicle at that time. Taxi cab picked us up at home at 7 AM and off we went. Doors didn't open til noon, so we waited all that time. BUT we got front row seats and the show was the B O M B! I loved Culture Club and still do!!!
"Love is hard to find in the church of the poisoned mind" . I was just listening to this song and suddenly realized that one line is so true especially right now when there is so much hate for others who are different from the rest.
Nearly 40 years later this easy going popper still kicks. Helen Terry and the guitar fills on beats 2 and 4 make the song roll right along. Wake up and smell the coffee: it's still the Eighties!
I adored him when I was a kid! His beautiful voice, face and personality! I loved it when he was a guest on the A-Team. This was one talented band. COMPLETELY UNIQUE.
@Dominique I was the same, I wanted to marry him, but my mum told me I wasn't his type, I assumed she meant he was too old, but I'd still marry him, he was my late grans favourite artist and when karma Chameleon came on we'd get up and dance, that's one of my fondest memories of my gran .
I always felt that Boy George’s controversial image distracted most from the fact that they made extremely well crafted blue eyed soul. Helen Terry hits all the right notes here.
Seeing things now, I'm convinced he was a head of his time and courageous! His image should should distract anyone from his artistic genius. I mean I grew up in the deep south and deep in church but I thought both he and his music were beautiful and transcendant. I mean look at that face! Such a sweet young boy!
I agree. That voice! That delivery! That Boy could sing. I don't think he realized or appreciated it at that time. Seems like he was more into the look than the music at that time. Things have changed with maturity.
This song was released back in April 1983 I actually thought that this song was released more recent than '83 Cracking song from culture club They had some good songs throughout the 80s 1980s music is flawless 😍
I was definitely born in the wrong era! I'm 20 and love all the older music, Culture Club is one of my favourite bands, I've has privilege of seeing them live and meeting them multiple times now, they're all really sweet, especially Mikey! Songs like this bring me so much joy! Oh, to have been alive back then!
My son, born in the 2000's, says the exact same thing all the time. He wishes that he was born in the late 70's/early 80's. He constantly plays his guitar to all of the 80's music, loves The Cure...
Love him he is one of my favorite artists.........Love you Boy George and Culture Club....Such a gorgeous face!!!!......Talented as Heaven....xoxo Forever and ever......
I was 12 when this came out,as I sat and watched this I was thinking about how much are world has changed since than. We grew up in a great era I wouldn't trade that time for anything in the world
Ah, people my age that truly understand how great the 80s were, and still are. May the 80s live forever. A decade of fun and celebration. Wish I could go back in time.
What a contagious fun upbeat song!! Contagious in a good way!! You could hear this song over and over and never get sick of it!! Loved it then and will always will!!
