@@hanssprungfeld8487 I went to a comedy show at the fringe, was a comedian that I speak to occasionally on social media, they knew I was at the show and gave me a shout out at the end, to say "Hi, you actually exist" at the same time he gave the first minister of Scotland a shout out, they had been sat up the back watching the entire show and there was no fan fare, no big long train of cars and media everywhere for photo ops, no the first minister of Scotland was just in there chilling and laughing same as everyone else and like the comment you replied to said, no one cared.

Don't worry about the pronunciations, even some of us Scots have trouble with the occasional Scottish word pronunciation haha. Kirkcudbright, for example. I've only ever read it, up until last weekend I'd never heard it said out loud. Then my gran goes and says "Kur-coo-bray" and I was like ". . . where?" lmao. One thing though. GAY-lic = Irish Gaelic, GAH-lic = Scottish Gaelic :)

Funniest accent thing I remember with foreigners was I worked at a factory that was 90% polish and Romanian and there was a shitload of interpreters who spoke really good to excellent English but we needed Scottish translators to work with the polish interpreters because they couldn't understand what most of us were saying.. It was like something out of a sketch show.. I think he's speaking Gaelic lol no that's English believe it or not..

As an American: 1) It makes me wonder why some Brits are confused by our equivalent “How are you?” greeting. 2) Don’t use “You alright?” as greeting in the U.S. Here we ask if you’re alright because there’s some reason to think that you aren’t. If you just tripped, dropped something, almost got hit etc it’s an expression of concern; otherwise it means you either look unwell, out of sorts or agitated and again they’re concerned or that you’re behaving erratically or inappropriately and they are warning you to stop.

The separate tap system comes from a very old but good standard. Hot water was not heated when you needed it, but heated in a tank and stored. This meant that although the water going in was excellent drinking quality, it could be left warm in the tank for a log period and degrade. In addition it was fed from a header tank in the loft, which was often uncovered. Having separate taps ensured that the water from the cold tap was always excellent drinking quality and also avoided any risk of cross contamination, or back syphoning should the cold water feed temporarily be interrupted.

In Czech Rep there's almost no greyhounds (or, you know, very little so they just kinda blend in), so it was interesting to me to move to a part of the world where the dog racing culture created this 'enhanced greyhound effect'. I really liked your video. I would, however, disagree on the buses. I think they are very well-connected and reliable. You can track them on google maps and it is accurate 97% of the time. They also have a second floor which means you can seat almost every time. They have recently added contactless payment so that is also very convenient. I think a monthly ticket of 59 pounds is really not expensive. Specially when compared to london, where people spend hundreds of pounds.

Compared to Czech Republic the transport is very expensive and unreliable- when I lived in Prague 3 years ago I could buy a 3 month transport pass (usable on bus, tram and metro 24/7) for roughly £30. In comparison- a monthly scotrail pass from Bearsden to Glasgow (20 mins max) was £70 for one month- that only includes the train (usually delayed or cancelled) between those stops.

@@Kakibot Quite a lot of things. Let's see. The beer is great and cheap but I was confused when I saw people drink a half pint or a full pint of froth (snyt/mliko). That’s weird. Bars are generally quieter with everyone sitting down whereas in Edinburgh people often stand and can be quite noisy. I knew the winter would be super cold but didn’t know the summer would be so hot, it’s great! I didn’t think I would like the food so much but svickova, spanielsky ptacek, gulas, rizek etc are all things I eat all of the time. Skiing? Really? Always being asked if I ski. Didn’t know it was so big here. Transport is waaaaay better like you said! I had never heard of Czech wine particularly Burcak and I love it (in moderation)! Your English is very good coming from another country, I'm Scottish and I have trouble speaking English because, well, they taught us English in the school but outside of school we mostly spoke Scottish dialect and some words we speak in Scotland aren't English so we tend to bounce both together. I hope this makes sense. I live in Nova Scotia Canada now for 46 years and people know right away that I'm Scottish.
@susangrande8142
@susangrande8142 2 года назад
Hi, Mr. Wilson, Yankee here. I’m curious, how different is Nova Scotia from Scotland? I have the impression it’s colder, and the accent is different. I’ve heard a RU-vidr from Cape Breton, and I’d say her accent is a mixture of interior Canadian and an Irish lilt and way of speaking the word-ending consonants.

Hi. Thanks for your informative video. I was born and grew up in Edinburgh but left after university. I have lived and worked in London, Southern Africa and the USA, and travelled extensively elsewhere. But I think Edinburgh is unique in its gorgeous location, variety of topography and the beauty of its built environment. On food, you do not mention the ubiquitous “chippie”. Not only fish and chips but, at least in my time there, pies, black and white puddings and haggis. These were the main take-out foods. Then first came the cheap and cheerful Chinese takeaways. There was only one Indian restaurant I remember in the city back then, on Lothian Road near where the Sheraton is now, and no Indian or Pakistani population to speak of. The spread of curry houses came with the influx of immigrants from the subcontinent which began in the seventies.

Really love your videos. I’m visiting Edinburgh from the US in early May. Could you comment on (or make a video) how to dress in Edinburgh? I’m referring to jeans vs khaki’s, Sneakers (trainers?) vs shoes, tee shirts vs button down or polo. Specifically for going to a pub, casual dining, etc.
@Kakibot
@Kakibot 4 года назад
The unpredictable weather here means that there's a lot of tolerance when it comes to dressing! The only time I've noticed anything regarding a dress code was a week ago when a pub jokingly said they didn't want people coming in wearing sweatpants .D but again, that was more of a joke than anything else. Any casual place, but also museums and galleries, will be perfectly fine with visitors wearing sneakers and jeans! .)

It always puzzles me as someone who lives in Scotland, why people from somewhere like Brazil, with the great climate, would want to come to cold, grey, wet Scotland. I mean, I know it's more complicated than that, but still.

It is not possible to imagine Britain without pubs. Glad you seem to be having fun. Visit Yorkshire - York (lovely walkable city), Whitby with its Abbey, Harbour and Dracula associations and the steam railway to Pickering, The North York Moors, The Dales, Ripon & nearby Fountains Abbey. Lots to see.

Totally agree re shop opening hours, I got used to shops being open until 10pm in China, much more convenient.
@faithlesshound5621
@faithlesshound5621 8 месяцев назад
The opening hours used to be much the same throughout Scotland. Small shops used also to close for an hour at lunchtime: exactly when that was varied unpredictably. Essentially, only full-time housewives could go shopping for most things, unless it was Saturday morning. Indian (and other) shops forced a sea change, at least in the cities. When England had its great debate about Sunday opening, it turned out that there was no law forcing Scottish shops to say shut on Sundays: it was just customary.

I'm happy to hear Edinburgh has the chill drivers because we also experienced this across France and it was lovely. When we came back home to the American impatient drivers it might be the thing we miss the most. I looked up the data and it is not only less stressful but much safer with way less traffic deaths and accidents.

Edinburgh is not so small, in fact, it is larger than Glasgow in area. Edinburgh is 102 sq miles (264 km2) while Glasgow is 68 sq miles (175 km2). Edinburgh's bus service is regarded as the best in the UK and supplies a 24 hour bus service. There are 56 daytime routes (5am - 11.30pm) and 12 night routes. Most buses run every 15 minutes with some running every 10 minutes so they are very frequent and most run to the timetable times. There is a single flat fare of £1.80 for adults and 90p for children, which is a lot cheaper than many cities in the UK, and a day ticket for unlimited travel at £4.50 for adults £2.50 for children.
@Kakibot
@Kakibot 3 года назад
All of this is true and Edinburgh certainly shines when compared to a lot of places across the UK, but the point of this video was not to make that comparison, it was to point out how different life in Edinburgh is compared to my original city where a basic fare is 80p and you get to take multiple lines within a given time period. Plus a 4 week ridacard is £60 here and about £18 in Prague and that is a solid difference? That said Edinburgh is so pleasant to walk around that it's nice to save the money and take a walk anyway!

As far as the C word being used a lot, yeah, we do use it quite a lot but it has to be used in the right context ... You would use it in your own social circle but you wouldn't use it with someone you didn't know ... at least most people wouldn't, you do get the occasional scumbag though. It's more of a western Scotland thing though, you'll hear it a lot more in Glasgow and the west coast than you would in places like Edinburgh. I love the Czech Republic, beautiful country ... and us Scots love the beer prices :)

I’m a bit bemused by the comment that public transport is unreliable, quite the opposite. Edinburgh has a fantastic bus system and if you buy a day ticket you can travel all day for about £4.50.
@Kakibot
@Kakibot 4 года назад
I can absolutely imagine it being much worse so I get where you're coming from especially if you're comparing it to cities where it is less reliable - but Prague's public transport is insanely good, so from my perspective it's a bit of a let down here! On the other hand Edinburgh is much more easily 'walkable', so that makes up for it.

19 yeah we have short shopping hours that’s really frustrating how do they get enough business most people work those are the hours I agree with you I live in the Midwest Minneapolis, Minnesota, St. Paul. We have generally have shops that are open late. You know your mom poor little ace hardware has 1 L day, but then of course we have this giant big box places there sucking like Menards take up a whole city block and places like Home Depot in Target and of course there’s a Walmart that’s probably open 24 hours I never shop there. Just agree with the greedy commercialism of America and someways if you look at it no it’s probably better because then people aren’t overworked and stressed out but you figured to be a few shops open later, but you know on the grand scheme hopefully people can rest and be with your families more often instead of working till third shift hours.
