In this video we work on bringing back to life a 1981 230KW Cummins big cam portable generator set. It was parked approximately 3 years ago due to a suspected bad breaker, it wasn't worth the money needed to fix it so it has been sitting since. we get it fired up and it appears to be making voltage so we break out the load banks to put it through its paces.

I am surprised at the size of the batteries needed to start the Cummins generator. What is the displacement and hp of that engine, and how many amps needed to crank it? Really would like to know... thanks. 👍

They are fairly large but fairly standard for a generator this size. It’s a 14 liter engine, same engine that would be found in a lot of semi trucks of that era. It would be interesting to see what the amp draw is during cranking.

Nice unit Drew! Fellow Gen tech. I worked for a Kohler dealer for 8 years then last 2 years for Ohio Cat. I used to service several of those 855 Big Cams in Kohler units. Every time during a manual run right when you place the switch in off it would rev up for a second. Always got me! lol I'm actually doing a week long night project with 2 Cat 3516's and just sitting in my truck watching JC's videos and then yours. Never knew you were a gen tech. Saw when you visited DeBoss Garage!

I’m not exactly a gen tech lol my actual job title is electrician but I wear a couple different hats. Keeps me busy. Have you worked on any of the newer “Cat” generators with the v12 generac NG engines?

@@DrEwBaBy625 Oh Ok. I have not. 99% of what I service or repair is diesel but any NG stuff I touch is basically 125kw and down. I have seen some new stuff coming such as Cat's spec (or value) line coming with a Deep Sea controller. They are trying to compete with Kohler on the smaller stuff.

I love the old generators, currently I have 1 diesel, 5 natural gas onan. Generators. Of course there only onan Jbs but I like them.

That generator is Awesome! Can't kill a Cummins ! Great video, I've never seen load banks used before. I've always just seen people just plug in a bunch of electrical devices to test a generator.

Thank you. Load banks are essentially just big heaters but come in handy for troubleshooting and working on generators.

A 230KW generator you say? With a Cummins?! What could anyone ever need that much power for? Thats just silly and way too big for any possible use... Also: I need one so I can charge jetski batteries without having to run an extension cord across the yard... This thing is awesome. I shouldn't have passed up the 6bt genset I saw a few years ago for $300. I'm sure the guy who had it had blown it up and knew it, but still, given that chance again now I'd have to explain to my wife why there is another lawn ornament placed in the worst possible location.

I have a 500 Kw cummins kta gen set, 1150 cubic inches and 600 horse power, probably weighs 10,000 lbd

@@daynemartin1807 mmmm, that might be a better fit for charging some pwc batteries, maybe enough juice to even handle charging a lawn mower battery up occasionally. To FB Marketplace I go! And yes I still kick myself for passing up that 6bt genset

That size is not uncommon for backup power. IE, hospitals, factories, military. Some industries can't wait on the power company.

So if i ever get a cummins generator i would run used animal grease and oil would be man made oil. I did came here when i look up cat swap ford pick up i like it so i sup to your channel.
