This video is how to maintain and clean the Cummins Onan RV QG 4000 generator with Seafoam. Following a video, by the manufacturer Seafoam, it shows how to use a concentrated mixture of gasoline and Seafoam to clean and maintain the generator's carburetor. Seafoam claims this procedure will help loosen gum and varnish, allow the generator to run easier and start easier. The Seafoam manufacturer video is listed below to view. I don't know why but I lost several comments and questions. Someone asked does the generator need to be level to operate. The short answer is no. As long as your not parked on a steep incline you should be fine.

Wow, I just discovered your series of videos...SOOOO helpful for an 80-year old "newbie" who is just returning to RVing after about a 20-year absence at least from owning a motorhome. I've owned absolutely everything from simple, basic tent trailer on up to fifth-wheel and a couple of motorhomes. Your videos are a ""god-send" that even an old codger like me can learn a lot about routine maintenance procedures. I really, really do appreciate all of the great information that is going to make our "newest"/latest 2017 model RVing so much more pleasurable. Sure wish this had been around 20-30 years ago. Thanks so very much. Great job. Marvin W. Canyon Lake (hour above San Diego) year-round RVer but not a full-timer.

Great video, have the same problem. However, I live at 6500 FT and do most camping higher, even with the altitude adjustment all the way to the right it still puts out some black smoke then fouls spark plug. Does anyone have the procedure for adjusting the air/fuel mixture on this same genset? (assuming screws in the side of carb)

not to be a kill joy but 4 oz of sea-foam to a gallon of gas is around a 30:1 mixture and not nearly enough to accomplish much of anything unless you are doing it monthly. You really should be doing a minimum of a 4:1 mix or preferably 2:1 mix at least twice a year. 4:1 mix is 16 oz sea-foam to half a gallon of gas 2:1 mix is 32 oz of sea-foam to half a gallon of gas A 4:1 mix done quarterly will greatly reduce the risk of carburetor gumming up and virtually eliminate carbon fouling of the upper cylinder, head and valves
@RVHabit
@RVHabit 4 года назад
I agree a higher Seafoam to gas ratio is best. I have started using A 2:1 ratio twice a year. The generator runs very smooth.

Nice idea. I will probably try this. Two things. The generator depends on that front cover to channel the air from the fan around the air engine to cool it. Running with that front cover off risks over heating the engine. See the manual. Second, I noticed the fuel line in your generator is missing some of the corrugated black plastic cover that acts as a heat shield to avoid vapor lock. My generator was the same. I added some more covering all the way up to the carb. I noticed most pictures of this generator show more shielding in place.
@RVHabit
@RVHabit 2 года назад
Yes the generator needs the front cover on to properly cool the engine. I removed some of the corrugated plastic on the fuel line for the video but I will check to make sure it's completely covered. Thanks for watching.

I have been watching your videos and find them very helpful. Thanks! I am trying this on my newly purchased used RV. The trouble I am having is that I cannot remove the fuel line hose from the filter. It will spin and I can wiggle it but I just cant get it off and I don"t want to damage anything. Any help anyone can provide would be helpful.
@TheBandit7613
@TheBandit7613 3 года назад
Pull harder. Once the clamp is loose, it pulls off. If it's been on for a long time, the rubber hose will shape itself to the nipple. It will need some extra persuasion. If the hose is old and no longer pliable, replace it. Follow the hose to an end, then remove and get another section from the parts store the same size. If ethanol free fuel is available, use that. Ethanol in gas goes bad in a few months. 100% gas has a two year shelf life. Ethanol is rotten in fuel.

I wonder if a bypass valve in the fuel line would make it quicker than disconnecting the line if the bypass valve had a second connection port you could just run a fuel line into a can of Trufuel and run everytime after a trip. Then there would be zero ethanol in the carb and engine while it sits.

@RVHabit
@RVHabit 7 лет назад
Thank you so much for watching and taking time to comment. Depending on what Sta-Bil you use will depend on the amount needed. I use only Marine 360 Sta-Bil. I have had good success with it in lieu of the regular red Sta-Bil. At first it may seem that the Marine 360 Sta-Bil is more expensive but you actually use less of it so it lasts longer. I follow the directions and during the summer months when I use the rig I put in one ounce of Sta-Bil for every ten gallons of gasoline. When I store my rig in the winter months I double the dosage to one ounce every five gallons of gasoline. I add the Sta-Bil right after I get gasoline at the pumps. Again thank you so much for watching. Happy travels and stay safe.

Hi, thanks for all your excellent videos! I'm a first time RVer and tried to perform this maintenance. But after removing the clamp on the fuel line, I couldn't disconnect it. There's some type of black "band" holding it tight. I can't remove it no matter how hard I tug. I don't think I can post a photo here, unfortunately. Any suggestions?

I wonder if you could use a 3way valve like a motocycle tank valve and then you could leave a hose caped under there and when u wanna do the treatment you could tank you gascan and uncap the hose throw it in the can and just turn the valve so its drawing from the can...would really simplify it then

My used RV is 1997, and I did an oil change and air filter change myself a year ago. Did not know how to tackle cleaning the carburetor, fuel line, checking fuel pump and fuel filter issues. I found out on RU-vid University. However, your video on Carb cleaning and flushing is the best! Hi, great video, when you say " surge" that means the gen starts and goes off? My gen is been sitting for a while (long time) doesn't star, should i do this?. Thanks in advance.
@RVHabit
@RVHabit 5 лет назад
Surge means the engine goes high and low while running. These machines hate to sit and not run. The carbs become clogged with fuel that deteriorates. You can try to get some cleaner in the carb to get it running. If the the carb is shot they are not rebuildable and must be replaced. If your not comfortable with small engine work I strongly recommend taking it to an authorized Cummins dealer to have the work done. This process in the video will keep carb clean. Good luck.

@RVHabit
@RVHabit 5 лет назад
Surging usually indicates a carburetor issue stemming from old gas that sits in the generator. Generators are meant to be used and they do not like to sit for long periods of time without running. You should run (exercise) the generator at least monthly under load for an hour or so. As for not restarting when the engine is hot. Make sure you are not priming the engine before restarting...see if that helps.

Hi +HDLowrider, almost bought the 3011DS its an awesome floor plan. Opted for the Forester 2801 GTS which stands for Grand Touring Series. It's 30ft. and yes no overhead bunk which gives it a sleeker front cab. There are some pros and cons in the difference. As for carburetor maintenance I would say YES. Almost every problem you hear with these generators is carburetor or fuel pump. The carburetors gum up super easy and super fast. Run at least once a month under load. I run mine under load for at least one hour every 2 to 3 weeks. I also think the SeaFoam maintenance described in the video is a great way to clean the carb. The idea though is not mine. I saw it on a SeaFoam manufacturer video. It is very simple to do and I will continue the procedure twice a year. Happy travels and thanks for watching.

Most coach tanks are 55 gallons or more so at a 1/4 tank you would need a minimum of 14 gallons of gas in the RV to allow the generator to run. That would mean you need seven gallons of Seafoam to get a 2:1 ratio. You see the point, hence the gallon container with Seafoam mixture.

Hi Sid, It actually is pretty quiet. I have the door open and the camera microphone amplifies the sound quite a bit. Thanks for watching.

It's a generator, with the door open... You didn't honestly expect it to be quiet did you? LOL

why not just run the Sea Foam in the fuel tank?
@RVHabit
@RVHabit 7 лет назад
Hi +richardsridge71 thanks for the question. The fuel tank on the e450 chassis is 55 gallons and in order for the generator to run the fuel tank must be at least one-quarter full. That would mean at least 14 gallons of gas in the tank. To get the concentration you need of seafoam you would need to add at least 6 to 7 cans of seafoam added to the gas tank. Thanks for watching!

do you mean after performing the SeaFoam carb cleaning per RV Habit, why not then also use SeaFoam in the coach tank year-round (per SeaFoams recommendations) in place of the Sta-Bil ?!
@RVHabit
@RVHabit 7 лет назад
If that's what was meant you can certainly run Seafoam in the coach tank year round. However it would not replace doing the Seafoam treatment in the video.

Curious why you prefer to use Sta-Bil over Sea Foam as your everyday additive, carb/injector cleaner ?

No particular reason except I have been using sta-bil for years. More like an old habit than anything else. Sta-bil does seem a little less expensive to use as a gas additive to avoid fuel breakdown.

Hi RV Habit, GREAT tutorial, thanks !!! I have a question, at 5:20 into your video. When you prime the carburetor, this time, "it"(?) makes a much louder "clicking" noise, different from the "normal" purr. My generator makes this much louder noise also. As I am researching how to clean a gummed up carburetor in order to EVEN get this generator running (neglected for some time). This same loud noise occurs while holding my purge button down for 10-15 seconds and has me baffled as to what it is. As I said, I haven't gotten the gen running yet and don't want to harm anything by depressing the prime button for very long with this noise happening. Have you any idea what the loud noise is? Thanks
@RVHabit
@RVHabit 4 года назад
That noise is when you hold down the prime button longer than necessary. I am not a small engine expert by any means but if your carb is so gummed up look into using a more powerful cleaner. I do know that Onan states their carbs cannot be rebuilt. A new Onan carb will run you about $200. Good luck.

My generator will start, run for about 5 to 10 seconds and then cuts off. It only has 50 hours on it and I haven't changed the oil yet. When it cuts off, the light flashes 3 times. I plan on changing the oil and air filter soon. Will this help? I forgot to drain the bowl and it hasn't been run since July.

Hi the light flashing 3 times means there is a fault code that has been saved to the controller. There is a way to retrieve the code but I would be hesitant to go into detail unless you are very familiar and comfortable working on engines and generators. Not running since July is not optimal. You want to run these generators at a minimum of once a month under load for an hour. I prefer running it every 2 weeks under load. The carburetors gum up quickly due to ethanol in fuel. I would check the oil level to make sure the low oil sensor is not cutting the engine out. It sounds like your generator is new since you have not changed the break-in oil and it only has 50 hours on it. I would recommend taking it in under warranty since it is new. Let us know how you make out.

RV Habit thanks. I was reading in the manual last night to push the prime button once and it will tell you the fault code? If it’s something simple, I’m kinda comfortable working on it. I bought the toy hauler with the generator in June of 2017.

Go to this link and then page 31 which explain how to retrieve codes. power.cummins.com/sites/default/files/literature/rv/F-1123-EN.pdf
