Man your doing awesome things in the diesel world if your ever near north carolina hit me up got a small wrecking yard have 8 running cummins myself and 30 more parts trucks big fan of urs Edison is doing amazing stuff too would love to be a part of it
I'm sorry... I have to say this. If Ram comes out with a diesel electric hybrid 2500 series pickup or cab chassis called the ReCharger, it'd be an actual step forward in this world. No bells and whistles like a cybertruck or these random hybrids from kia and Hyundai. Just a truck for truck's sake.
@@whitlcj1 It's already in the works. 2025(?) Ram 1500 REV (Range Extended Vehicle). The truck concept that these guys are doing is the same idea, except Ram is using the 3.6L Pentastar as the genset prime mover instead of a diesel. I suspect because it's their engine and it will be more user friendly in cold climates ...but that's my guess. They could've easily have used the Eco Diesel as the genset power plant as well. What Edison is up to is a great idea, as it will allow what Ram is doing - in my opinion the ONLY way a truck from a 1500/150 series to a tractor - to use electric motors. No need for a charging station, although Ram says that you can still plug it in too. The other side bonus (and I would assume Edison is/will be doing as well) is offer ...like the other EV trucks have, electric power take-off so that the truck can be used as site power. The huge advantage that Ram (and potentially Edison) has in this usage case is that when the batteries are low, all you need is more fuel. Also, both versions should be able to (even if it's only a software update to make it work) is like the Chrysler ENVI program from the early 2000's, the engine could just be used to charge only, running on just batteries until they are low. I think that I read that Ram will keep the 3.6L running all the time, albeit at a consistent RPM where the engine is at it's peak efficiency, so like a locomotive but the batteries can act like a buffer to smooth out demand loads on the genset. It shouldn't take more than an update to give you operation modes. ...Edison will allow you to do what a MFG is doing on a new truck, but give you the same abilities in powertrain, but in your old iron too, and that's very cool.
I love how quickly your videos move. They have a great pacing and you cover a lot of ground! You waste no time getting down to business and keeping things rolling. I always love how much you squeeze into a video imstead of showing a bunch of silly details to pad your videos
I was planning on installing one of these Cummins R2.8 crate engines in my '96 Jeep ZJ project vehicle. The engine being 50 State compliant up to '99, is perfect. I live in California, so compliance to the rules is the only option. I was planning on using a ZF 8-speed or the current 6-speed stick. But now, the Edison Motors drive system seems interesting. I have an '03 Ford Explorer with all modes being 4wd. When I bought it new, I considered that at some time it may have electric drive front and rear. I really believe that Edison Motors and the Ram Ramcharger are a better idea than Battery Electric Vehicles for any truck.
I know its not how you will be using it, but Im so jealous of that 2.8! I built my little truck in 2014, if I had to do it over again I'd do the R2.8. Thanks for sharing.
Those Cummins engines are very known here in aus for the pickup tube to break/ come off in the oil pan and cause it to suck air and of course wreck the engine. Worth looking into a way to make it better
Twenty years ago, none of my gear head buddies believed me when I said electrification is just another tool in the box. One day, we'll all be sitting around, pondering how we can shove a bunch of batteries into a pick-up truck to deliver power and torque in ways we can't even imagine. And here we are today. This project is so fucking cool!
Those 360’s were actually a pretty good motor, real reliable and better power than a 350 Chevy. I had one in my 79 power wagon, converted to carbureted with an edelbrock performer intake and 4 barrel, bit of a lumpy cam. Sounded amazing and plenty of power! But yes I agree, terrible mileage and still just a gas motor, I’m really looking forward to this project! 👍
360's and 318's get terrible mileage because the 727-based transmission (RH/RE overdrives) is a power-sucking Turd. If you get one with a Manual or the 904-based transmission (RH/RE overdrives) the mileage goes up 2mpg auto and 4mpg on the Manual OD
Love it, on the crate it says "Crated in USA" which of course means it was from somewhere else and engine tag says China. So is that a CCP engine? Chinese Cummins Product? lol
@@aliabdallah102 Plenty of things not made in China. Just funny how the crate mentions USA, knowing it is made in China and all the Cummins diehards flipping out about it.
Actually, the MAF goes on the cold side of the CAC piping before your intake manifold. If you install it before the turbocharger, it's not going to calculate airflow correctly. This is how all of the new engines are setup, they have a MAP and a MAF sensor to calculate the fuel map in the ECM. If this engine harness doesn't have long enough wires, it's probably designed to have the MAF pipe mounted over top of the engine with silicone boots connecting the turbo directly to the intake manifold.
I think that ecodiesel went thru 3 generation in under a decade and still had massive problems. Fiat had to lose massive money from all the warranty repairs/replacements
I owned a 2017 Chevy Volt plug in hybrid for five years. The Voltec drive system isn’t just a generator in an electric car btw. It re-taight me a valuable lesson. That the more options one has equals more freedom. With two fuel options in my volt I have more freedom than a mono fuel vehicle will ever have. I’m excited for this truck project guys even though I’m only here for the music.
While it is true, that at the end of every Jeep trail is a 1994 Camry that made it there before you, 4wd is certainly not only for those who can't drive. Lol. The number of people I've pulled out of snow banks because I had snow tires and 4wd alone..
I've been eyeballing these things ever since SEMA as well. This would be one hell of an engine for a S10 Blazer 4 by 4 swap. I see there's a lot of programs for these now. All kind of tunes coming out of the woodwork. Curious what you going to do with this.
What is your opinion on preoilers/accumulators? Dave was talking about how long it took late model diesels to refill the oil gallery and cooler each start, even if only an hour had passed. Let alone after an oil change. I pondered the best triggering system, instead of key on. I think a relay operated by a glow plug lead would be optimal. An electrically opened valve at the oil pressure sensor would allow pressurized oil to charge the mains before engine rotation. Dave indicated 10 or more seconds of run time till oil shot out the open oil cooler port. 2 or 3 qts? There's repeat customers, and there's planned obsolescence. A 3qt accumulator is $300? An electric opened valve $150? $50 hose... I can't imagine running in cold climate with out it. The next part is how to exchange old oil for new in the Accumulator. Ohh! I just figured it out. But a small diesel like a VW could make a good power unit. You could run a 30 to 70kw gen head and the engine will mostly loaf at those levels sparing a bunch of fuel. The units I played with in the Navy chewed up 40 GPH. We tried not to use them too long... I'm thinking this setup wouldn't burn more than 4 - 8 GPH? But there are plenty out there. And do DIY have to follow modern standards? Having a static run state you could get that little bugger to be quite compliant. You could even start it on propane or CNG. There are ways to beat regulations. Biggest problem is they are written to prevent anyone but Big corp to be able to do so. But as a Smokey Yunick fan, I know there are ways.
21:47 that's interesting that they say you want to load a new diesel engine as hard as it goes to break it in -- for gasoline engines it's the opposite: varied loads but nothing approaching redline, mostly light and easy.
I see there was Foton printed on the engine plastic bag, read the reviews on the Foton Tunland pickup sold overseas the 2.8 Cummins has issues, my advise delete the EGR system, it clogs intakes and kills engines
Fun project! I have a Cummins r2.8 swapped in my Delica van. Love the engine. My van weighs 6k lbs, shaped like a toaster, has way too short gearing and I still average 21 mpg going 70-75. If you want more power get the TDI tuner: 220 Hp and 400 tq.
the 4BT and 6BT are just way too much power potential for many utes and 4WD's..........whereas 2.8 is a much better fit with the rest of the drive train. Plus it fits a lot easier......and lets face it, less modification is better for us mere mortals.
EXCITED FOR THIS BUILD!!🎉 Would love to put a NEW Cummins Crate engine in my 07 Ram swap it for the hemi in it... EVEN BETTER, the swap yall are doing...
When the R2.8 came out, was day-dreaming about it's use as a hybrid engine. Only in a real truck where the engine is under the hood, not the windshield. Although there's probably plenty of room.
I think they're higher than that , I was considering putting one in my 90 YJ , then the Kung-Flu hit , the price skyrocketed and they were out of parts ...
Arr, the made in China, Cummings, had a Foton Tunland 4x4 pick up here in NZ, with same motor, got good mileage, had dome quirks , but overall a good truck
The baby Cummins sounds good on the first startup! Can't wait to see how it does on a standard drivetrain before you go with the e-axles! This is going to be a very cool series Rich!😉👍👍👍
I'll be taking notes. Looking to do the exact same thing to my 10th gen F-150 when the transmission and engine get tired. Maybe another 150k until then tho.
I have a 93 Silverado c3500 diesel crew cab dually. I have often wondered about swapping a 2.8 and trying to hypermile the truck. Very interested in every step of the way!
I always find it weird you north americans don't have hydraulic loading platforms on your delivery vehicles. It's pretty much standard here in europe, at least on trucks and trailers for delivery. Trailers made for terminal to terminal transport don't always have them of course.
I work in a underground mine that is limited on air down below a certain point. I really wonder if this could be a feasible application for this diesel electric combo in toyota landcruiser that are often used in underground mines. I feel there would be major potential for this. Charge the battery when in the main ramp and travel on limited areas on battery. Not restricting people to run around for gear in a timely matter could really improve production i feel.
Will it have cruise control? Know last I check folks where still trying to figure best way to have cruise. Guess the cruise control store finally made one, so guess that solved my issue with my build.
Hey Rich, I own and DAILY a 1995 Ford F250 4x4 with the 5.8l gas (I know it's what I could afford at the time) and live in commiefornia and every other year I have to do emissions and I'm not way under legal limit but 3/4s under legal limit and the only thing I've done is kept it roughly stock. It has shorty headers and a cat back system and upgraded ignition system other than that THAT'S IT.
Seen quite of few of these as a Cummins Tech. They're usually in smaller industrial applications. So it will be very interesting to see what it looks like in a on-road automotive hybrid application!
I dont think I would call that truck worthless just because it has a gas engine and is 2wd lol. I have 2 90’s 2wd gas job trucks that I use for alot of stuff and yes I live in a snow region. Seems more like this video is trying to be one of those late night ads selling you a set silverware that you “need” 😂. Love the other content keep up the awesome videos
If you want to save money get a wrecked Foton Tunland from China or if possible just the front clip with accesories, that model came from factory with this engine as well as many other cargo trucks and vans from Foton
I really liked the shot of that gasser exhaust pointed down under the bed with the “I’m not here to judge anybody’s choices”. The beauty of RU-vid is you don’t have to judge. just get it on video and the comments section will judge for you. 😂
13:39 Years ago. Still do but don’t. Just because Diesel has gotten up there in price. Also Bidennomics has caused these Cummins & other diesel pickups in my area to crash in value. There’s a few listed for sale at first say atleast a year ago for around 9k usd, they have since dropped their prices from that to 2.5K. + bring a can of diesel for test drive. 😢
if you are considering another project, a 2004-10 Ford 6.0 is a great engine to replace with the Edison system. Newer truck, can be found for cheap because of the crap engines
That's odd. that's HPFP is BOSCH CP1H3 I got the same in my truck and I've added a CAT prefilter and low pressure 6psi lift pump and the pressure seems fine 4500 psi at idle and 23000 psi at WOT no issues of pressure fluctuation.
This question doesn’t have to do with this video. You and VGG speak highly of Rotella. I have a 2011 5.3, 140,000 miles, would you run Rotella in that truck
R2.8 is such a joke. All the years of hype hype before it came out and the end product is a heavy, expensive 2.8L that puts out less power than slightly tuned VW 2.0 CDI. Heck , I'd take a tuned old 1.9L over the 2.8. Less power, but dirt cheap and parts everywhere. Either VW option is going to a couple hundred pounds lighter as well.
Well, RU-vid finally did it. They've added these godawful obnoxiously loud commercials to your videos, and no "skip" option. We knew it was just a matter of time. Thank God for a mute button. 🤨 Fun video BTW.
12:59 You called an almost rust free pickup, that appears to run and drive fine, "useless" repeatedly and also said it was "months away from going to the scrap yard" Hype much? You should have shot the video of it in black and white. Then you'd have the whole late night gadget commercial down. 🙄🙄🙄 If you have anymore vehicles that are like this one, I'll give 20% over scrap price for every one. I've come to expect honest information from your channel but now that you are in business with Edison it appears that pushing a product is more important than objectivity.
You know what makes me shake my head the most about Canada (besides your current government) = Why on earth have you adopted only some of the metric system and not the most useful component - MEASUREMENT ? How anybody can think/believe measuring in fractions is easier than ones, defies logic.....
Sometimes it is OK to judge peoples choices. Someone intentionally paid money for that stupid 20"+ rim and tire job. You know for a fact they did not install those, they PAID MONEY for a tire shop to do that work. Yeah, it is OK to judge them... and lol at their stupid choices. The tire tech mounting that nonsense was cracking jokes the entire time, they see this video and are busting guts lol'n NOW.
