Acknowledging the scientists who blazed intellectual trails before him, Isaac Newton wrote: “If I have seen a little further it was by standing on the shoulders of giants.” In this special series, we invite our audience to stand on the shoulders of a modern day giant.
We are honored to present an address by National Academy member Cumrun Vafa, Donner Professor of Science in the Department of Physics at Harvard University. Vafa’s primary area of research is string theory, which is at the center of efforts by theoretical physicists to find a unified fundamental theory of nature in a consistent quantum theory. Vafa’s address focuses on an innovative approach he has pioneered at Harvard, using mind-bending puzzles to teach subtle but essential concepts in physics and energize the next generation of giants to engage with forefront ideas.
The World Science Festival gathers great minds in science and the arts to produce live and digital content that allows a broad general audience to engage with scientific discoveries. Our mission is to cultivate a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future.
On The Shoulders of Giants is supported in part by the John Templeton Foundation.

FANTASTIC!!!!! I have been extremely impressed by Dr. Vafa's teaching. Just the video alone demonstrates how a new perspective can affect everything. Thank you to all involved for this, as well as the other lessons. This is the greatest adventure I could ever have the pleasure to enjoy..................

Although it is of 2018 but it seems most elegant to release it in 2020. Especially in this pandemic!!!!

I bought his book immediately (actually I bought 4 copies) because there was no question about whether or not I wanted to read his book.

I had never heard of him before but I am just a layperson. To win a Dirac medal is something no? Amazingly accomplished.

@@captainpints Dirac predicted the existence of antimatter using Dirac sea and his famous equation. Using Schrodinger's equation with the Laplacian operator and the energy-momentum relationship, plus Klein-Gordon equation, you can derive the Dirac equation. Don't take the root of a differential operator, rather replace using alpha(arbitrary constant). 4 matrix and the Dirac spinor can be used along with the Feynman slash. You get the og Dirac equation with sigma notation. Dirac's large number hypothesis was key in forming a theory of quantum gravity as well. Dirac and Schrodinger won the Nobel Prize in 1933 for advancement in atomic theory. Dirac focused on quantum electrodynamics and was dissatisfied with the renormalisation trick. He contributed to the Hamiltonian theory of constraints and putting the Schwinger-Tomonaga equation into the Schrodinger representation and gave explicit expressions for the scalar meson field (spin zero pion or pseudoscalar meson), the vector meson field (spin one rho meson), and the electromagnetic field (spin one massless boson, photon). Einstein quoted on Dirac, "I have trouble with Dirac. This balancing on the dizzying path between genius and madness is awful." In another letter, he wrote, "I don't understand Dirac at all."

A question for you Kumran: I see a fan in front of my eyes right now, can you say with 100 percent certainty that if you go back in time , minus one second, you will find it right there?Same if you jump in time one second ahead, will you for sure find it? The manifested reality is like a puzzle, a mosaic of pieces of time space fabric that exists only in our minds. The human mind is an interface that stocks memory of assembled static images of space. Time only exists because we exist.

"On The Shoulders of Giants" is so important. Too many scientists nowadays try to do something entirely new without any foundation...

I am only 10 mins in but I think the red and black card thing is wrong statistically. I believe if you use 9 cards of each color over time it would be correct but when using 10 it will break down.

Regarding the problem only in space after college and having been there and studied 3 mathematics algebra and statistical analysis I'm in away puzzled by the theory because it distorts or bends everything you thought you knew by adding more dimensions and making your knowledge useless. So you're right. Not only I should studied this with more interest I have to seek it and be able to apply it empirically or I'm puzzled by all the applications of this subject. Although fascinating I think I'm not sure that I can understand it I'm 50 yo already. But if you think you can go for it! And hope you graduate with distinction. Greetings

the distribution of paints is not equal. the white was diluted by 100% green. the green was diluted by less than 100% white, so the white has more green than the green has white.

Left 10G, right 10W. Move 1G from left to right. Left 9G, right 10W + 1G. Move 1 (0.9W + 0.1G) from right to left Left is now 9G + 0.9W + 0.1G = 9.1G + 0.9W Right is now 10W + 1G -(0.9W + 0.1G) = 9.1W + 0.9G

Mam whatever understanding of nature we have through science till now is simply result of human curiosity to know more and more about nature and mam this curiosity is not limited by mere gender of humans. Whatever knowledge in science or any field we have acquired till now is a collective human effort... a human's effort to understand the beautiful intricacies hidden in nature. It weren't for all of our greatest scientists we wouldn't have known whatever we know today. And by scientists I mean humans not man or a woman. Science does not cares about a man or a woman, science's ultimate aim is knowing the nature more and more. Just for example if it weren't for Madam Marie Curie who knows if we would still have been confused about radioactivity and for example if Sir Einstein never existed we may not have figured out concept of relativity till now. All I just wanna convey is that with respect to universe we are mere mote of dust not a man or a woman. We are humans we rise together, we fall together.
