A 90 minute class for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and Repertory Understudy Group dancers and advanced students, taught by Robert Swinston. This shows the class in close up. Pat Richter is at the piano. Filmed at the Cunningham Dance Studio at Westbeth on July 30, 2009.
MERCE CUNNINGHAM (1919-2009) was a leader of the American avant-garde throughout his seventy year career and is considered one of the most important choreographers of his time. Through much of his life, he was also one of the greatest American dancers. With an artistic career distinguished by constant innovation, Cunningham expanded the frontiers not only of dance, but also of contemporary visual and performing arts.

Love, what else can one say? Love and gratitude for ever and ever, to Merce, to Robert for having the spirit and strengh to keep the work alive, to Trisha same, and all the company dancers and teachers, before and after who contribute to the ever ending legacy

I love how they still train with the basic fundamental footwork even though they're definitely more advanced than my primary school ballet classes 🤣

training in basic movements, even at professional level, is quite common. otherwise the profs tend to lose the basics. (that's what my company teacher told me)

We are releasing music written for contemporary technique class - very suitable for Cunningham/Graham. So far there are 175 instrumental tracks arranged by count and tempo. See our channel for more info.

I believe Graham was more about contraction and release. Merce does that but I felt like he concentrated on shapes. Also separating dance and music/emotion.

I love the Cunningham technique very much. It is very close to the Danamos principle (dance.art.master.system - seven basic movement of the human body-founded by Martin Puttke), which focuses exclusively on the basic elements of the human movement, without any content oder aesthetic interpretation. The impression of freedom and bond only arises from the organic flow auf the whole movement complexity.

I wanna know what function has dancing in this beautiful ugly world i wanna hear your opinions. How dancing can go beyong being pretty-sensitive and beyond presentations? I would love to articulate something

________________________________ However, be careful DANGER, with jolts, at the neuromuscular level, jerky order interruptions lead to irreversible, but painless muscle microlesions at first, for a long time. The injured muscle forms repair collagen and thus loses all its elasticity and flexibility. The same movement must be performed but IN CONTINUITY! Same with the Graham technique.

Just the Kmart version of what classical class can give you. I have studied all genres and danced a professional for 30 years. This is a waste of time.

Robert Kelly, I’m sorry, but Company class for the Cunningham company can never be a waste of time. I’m not sure what you mean by classical class, but I think you mean ballet, but ballet cannot teach you to do this material alone. I’m calling B.S. If. You don't know the most celebrated modern dance company...we can't believe you.

I have a hard time believing what you say your credentials are when 1) you are calling a class "classical" ... I've danced my whole life in a variety of places and have never heard that terminology. LOL 2) If you were a dance professional I don't think you would disrespect any form, style, or technique as all are beneficial and anyone who has seriously studied dance would agree. 3) I have studied ballet for years and for my body type I find Cunningham to be a better alternative to get stronger.
