In this thrilling adventure, I take on the challenging Inkwell Isle 1, the first chapter of this beautifully animated, yet notoriously difficult, run-and-gun game developed by Studio MDHR. Join me as I navigate the whimsical yet treacherous world of Cuphead, where I face off against five of the most iconic bosses in gaming history.
The Root Pack - A Battle in the Garden
Our first challenge in Inkwell Isle 1 is The Root Pack, a trio of vegetable-themed bosses who are deceptively tricky despite their innocent appearance. The battle takes place in a lush garden where I face off against a giant potato, an angry onion, and a mischievous carrot.
Giant Potato: The first phase introduces us to Sal Spudder, the giant potato who hurls dirt clods at Cuphead. Timing and quick reflexes are essential here as I dodge his attacks while dealing damage.
Crying Onion: Next up is Ollie Bulb, the crying onion. Ollie’s attack consists of releasing a barrage of teardrops that rain down from above.
Mischievous Carrot: Finally, we encounter Chauncey Chantenay, the psychic carrot with a mean streak. This phase ramps up the difficulty as Chauncey unleashes homing carrots and psychic beams that require precise dodging.
Goopy Le Grande - The Bouncing Blob
After defeating The Root Pack, I move on to Goopy Le Grande, a blue, bouncing blob that poses a different kind of challenge.
Initial Phase Goopy’s first phase involves him bouncing around the arena in an attempt to crush Cuphead. This phase is all about timing and positioning,
Second Phase After taking some damage, Goopy grows in size and becomes more aggressive. His bounces cover more ground, and he also gains a new attack where he lunges forward to deliver a powerful punch.
Final Phase The final phase is where things get really interesting. After seemingly being defeated, Goopy returns as a gravestone, hopping around the arena and trying to crush Cuphead.
Hilda Berg - The Twisted Zeppeliner
I take to the skies in a thrilling aerial battle against Hilda Berg, a menacing zeppelin who transforms into various constellations. This fight is one of the most visually stunning in Inkwell Isle 1, with a dynamic background and Hilda’s numerous forms keeping the battle exciting.
Zeppelin Form The fight begins with Hilda in her zeppelin form, where she flies across the screen and launches projectiles at Cuphead. In this phase, I must dodge the onslaught of bullets and parry the pink projectiles to build up my super meter. It’s a fast-paced and intense opening to the battle.
Constellation Forms As the fight progresses, Hilda transforms into different constellations, each with its own unique set of attacks. She can turn into Taurus, Sagittarius, and Gemini, each presenting a different challenge.
Final Form In the final phase, Hilda transforms into a giant moon, and the battle reaches its climax. The moon form is particularly challenging, with UFOs and stars filling the screen and leaving little room for error.
Cagney Carnation - The Flower of Fury
a sinister flower who attacks with a variety of plant-based moves. This battle takes place in a vibrant, flower-filled meadow, but don’t be fooled by the picturesque setting-Cagney is one of the more challenging bosses in Inkwell Isle 1.
Initial Attacks The fight begins with Cagney sending out a flurry of attacks, including seed projectiles, vines, and boomerang petals. The key to surviving this phase is to stay on the move and keep track of Cagney’s patterns.
Flower Turret: As the battle progresses, Cagney reveals his flower turret attack, where he transforms his face into a rotating turret that fires projectiles in all directions.
Final Phase: In the final phase, Cagney grows in size and becomes even more aggressive. He sends out a barrage of attacks, including his infamous downward punch and spinning petals that cover a large portion of the screen.
Ribby and Croaks - The Amphibious Duo
a pair of boxing frogs who combine their skills to create a formidable challenge. This battle takes place on a small platform with limited space to maneuver, adding an extra layer of difficulty.
Phase One: The fight begins with Ribby and Croaks using a combination of punches and fireballs to keep me on the defensive.
Phase Two: After taking some damage, Croaks transforms into a giant fan and pushes Cuphead toward Ribby, who rolls into a ball and bounces around the stage.
Final Phase: In the final phase, Ribby and Croaks combine their powers to transform into a giant slot machine.
