In 2019, mobility experts Melissa and Chris Bruntlett began a new adventure in Delft in the Netherlands. They had packed up their family in Vancouver, BC, and moved to Delft to experience the biking city as residents rather than as visitors. A year earlier they had become unofficial ambassadors for Dutch cities with the publication of their first book Building the Cycling City: The Dutch Blueprint for Urban Vitality.
In Curbing Traffic: The Human Case for Fewer Cars in Our Lives, Melissa and Chris Bruntlett chronicle their experience living in the Netherlands and the benefits that result from treating cars as visitors rather than owners of the road. They weave their personal story with research and interviews with experts and Delft locals to help readers share the experience of living in a city designed for people.

Thank you so much! A bit sad that Vancouver is yet so far from being that cosy as Delft :')

I realy enjoyed reading ”Curbing Traffic”! It’s such a precise and comprehensive explanation of the ”why” of investing in making the buildup area more walkable and cyclable! Kudos! Sadly convincing people to buy or lend a book is an uphill battle 😢 A visually powerfull RU-vid film is way easier to reach a massive audience! I don’t know how ambitious the two of you are with RU-vid, but I would love to see and share a redo of ”Curbing Traffic” series done with the show&tell technique Jason Slaughter uses in ”Not Just Bikes”. You’ve already done the ”tell” bit, but I think it would become so much more powerful if that would be the story told behind images showing what you are telling! People in mobility devices using the mobility lanes, children cycling on dutch streets contrasted with kids in north america being shuttled around on backseets! The quiet street in front of Delft Central vs the roar of a main street in a comparable sized city in the US etc. Love what you are doing for active mobilty. Please keep fighting the good fight ❤❤❤
