Check out the crew's perspective of this same encounter on their youtube channel! Short: ru-vid.comGvB78q48TCE Longer Vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Heioe2YcyOo.html If you're curious which one I am on the boat, I'm the one with the maroon/red-ish shirt (that some people have called purple??) and a gopro on a black pole (its gopro's El Grande pole). You can hear me say such iconic lines as 'My whole screen is blue whale.' and 'Holy shit'.

I have read and referenced those who have been lucky enough to see a blue whale in real life, that getting close to them is not easy, to have this experience for me would encompass such a wide range of emotions all being positive just to be in the same space would the closest to perfection on earth whilst I am wrapped in my mortal coil. Thank you for sharing this - it really is magnificent 🙏🏻

@@WMMtravels I am not one for flowery words and stuff but this really moved me - I just wish I could have a similar experience, who knows when I go sea swimming off the Gower coast I may bump into a friendly leviathan (more likely a Swansea trout or turd by it s more common name lol 💩)

LOLOL Subnautica does put the fear (or at least healthy respect) of ocean giants in a person. Of course at least the blue whale won't try to eat you haha

They do! It was insane watching it approach because of the sheer size. I was on a whale watching trip so we were out looking for the whales and dolphins in the area! We'd stopped once we'd found this one and were waiting to see where it would surface again and to our surprise we noticed a blue glow down deep and it came up to investigate the boat + eventually us. Trust I know, the positive is these whales follow food so they aren't necessarily local to one area - this individual was long gone the day after this footage was taken.

I've watched all 4 parts of this video, and it almost makes me tear up. Words can not begin to describe how incredible this footage is. It is incredibly rare that Blue Whales are this curious and approach like this, usually more of a Gray or Humpback thing. This is the kind of interaction people spend lifetimes searching for. I am so happy I found this video
@WMMtravels
@WMMtravels Год назад
Thank you! I think you're one of the first to know that about them - a lot of people have made the assumption that they're always this way. Over the course of the year I was lucky to see around 25 of these giants but this was the only adult that behaved like this. The rest were typical blue whale - just feeding on krill down deep or on the search for krill. I'm glad you found these too. c: And thank you again!

@WMMtravels Год назад
It felt a little like watching a train come straight at you haha We were in the boat so we had that but I can't imagine how intense that would have been had we all been in the water with it. It was very careful not to bump us so I imagine it would have been fine - definitely would have had my heart racing though.

I haven't seen too many photographs of blue whales, but from seeing other whales and dolphins known to be in need of groceries it occurs to me that this blue whale looks a bit gaunt; the area each side of its spine seems too concave, slightly dipped inward. It lives on krill which I understand is being impacted by global warming. If krill go, so will the blue whale and others as well.
@WMMtravels
@WMMtravels Год назад
Its possible its a little thin but its hard to say. There were ~15 or so in the area all feeding on krill so there was plenty of food around. From others who see blues often I was told these look way better than in previous years where the blues appeared pretty gaunt (maybe hard year for krill but hard to say since these nomads travel long distances).
@virginiamoss7045
@virginiamoss7045 Год назад
@@WMMtravels Good to know. They've been around for an incredibly long time so they must be really good survivors. Now if only we could stop fouling our nest.
@WMMtravels
@WMMtravels Год назад
@@virginiamoss7045 Definitely! It would be interesting to discover how they manage to locate their tiny food since it changes location depending on weather patterns which is why it can be so difficult to get to see a blue whale (I personally had been whale watching for about 3 years before I saw my first one).
