Two 'muggings' in one week! On two separate occasions curious minke whales closely approached two of our whale watching boats. The whales rolled around and turned on their sides as if to look at us!
A whale 'mugging' occurs when the animal takes a special interest in a boat by closely swimming around and under the vessel. Throughout both encounters, our boats were in neutral so the whales could hear the engines and know where we were.
Reaching lengths of up to 35 feet, minke whales are the smallest baleen whales off the coast of Southern California. Minkes feed on small schooling fish (like anchovies), crustaceans, and plankton. Unlike other large whales we see, minke whales rarely raise their tails out of the water.
