@@assemblingtron2549 That's why they'll never change. Why mess with something that's making them money? This foiling process is way cheaper than the old process (not to mention the paper now is thinner which causes all sorts of problems) and people will continue to fork out cash for it.
A method I use is taking several foils 4-6 that are curling and putting them all in a a perfect fit sleeve positioning half of them one way and the other half then opposite curled side to curled side of that makes sense. The curls pull against each other in the tight sleeve and it helps straighten them all out. Sort of the same theory as taping them to an opposite curve like you’re doing
Thanks for sharing your methods! Ive been doing the compression method when I store my decks in fat pack boxes but found that it works best for preventing curling not fixing them. Definitely going to try making one of those roller things to fix the ones that have already become pringles 👍
@@kingfuzzy2 Yes, that's just like saying "the car explodes because of a chemical reaction in the engine" yeah, it's still up to the company to fix that
One of the most insightful takes on the foil folly phenomenon I have seen in a long time with a remedy as well - have done this with 1980’s plastic toys that took on a curve while sitting and will easily reconform themselves to their original shape when reheated or energetically shaped
Since all I see is commenting on the foils, let me say thank you for doing this! I'm going to tweet out a link to this video. You have found a good solution to a problem people need. Well done!
Another thing that works is putting the card in a tupperware container elevated above a moist paper towel seal it for 30 mins and it's fixed. This works because pringles are the result of moisture difference between the manufacturer and the places it's ended up.
This is really good info and really sad too. Shame that I'd have to leave foils compressed or wrapped around a can to flatten them out. WotC really needs to get it together with their foil product.
When the edges are curling down, straight flattening or compression works far better after introducing some humidity first. I just bought some newer foil lands, they curled a bit with the humidity change coming indoors, I live in Fl, set em in a open box for 30 outside at night, it was 100% humidity 😂 , then again single sleeved for 20 minutes, then compressed for a couple hours inside, they look solid now
I use a dryer to heat up the foils and then hold them against a tube shaped thing with my hands for 30 seconds. Then leave the card inside a big old book for 2 or 3 days. It has been working good for me but some foils like the ones from the vault are almost impossible XD, nice video!
I appreciate the detailed analysis in your video. I have found that the CMR foils (and to a lesser extent Kaldheim foils) are curling due to dehydration. I have worked out a process to steam the cards to reduce the tension. I would say the final curl is roughly 90% removed. I need to try steaming the cards, then applying your mechanical method to see if the combination works even better.
I will give your method a try because as much as I like the foils, I have been forced to just put them away unused. Living in Arizona certainly dries everything out, but I would like to avoid using other methods I have see that use water (Water + Cardboard = Bad combination!). Thanks for the video!
100% Agree old foils are superior, in almost every way. New foils can have cool foil/nonfoil art details, but that's it. Foil old school lightning bolt, now that's a premium, beautiful card.
I have a 3D printer but suck at modeling. I would like to make an adjustable storage box as he suggested. With some sort of screw mechanism on the front that will push the cards tight
Indeed. The cut shit is a totally different topic, the thing was literally rolled into a tub, that's not what happen with the cards. Card curling is ONLY due to moisture and how the cardboard react compared to the plastic layer of the foil.
Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering what the curling is like on the Time Spiral "time shifted" cards, which used both the old border yet foiled the art as well. Visually, those were actually my favorite foils of all time.
Your ‘reverse’ curl is from the paper shrinking from a lack of humidity. You need those cigar humidifier packets and place them in an airtight box for a while.
@@Crunchatize_Me_Senpai It will help flatten the curl if the curl is toward the card back. I would check on it every 30 mins or so while its in the box. If you put too much moisture then it can curl towards the face of the card (then you would need to use desiccant packets).
I would like to see more about the how and less about your blingy commander deck, lol. Joking, but more explanation on the process of "de-curling" would be hepful
I'm really curious to try this technique and see if cards stay flat as humidity changes. During the warm months when humidity is higher, my foils remain fairly flat in sleeves. As soon as the furnace kicks on the curling sets in, particularly with unsleeved cards.
I found that first method really works the reverse curl, only thing is once they come out from reverse curl they seem to go back to their previous state any ideas how to prevent this ?
Ha I just got some foil bond lands from commander legends in the mail today and yea I should've just bought some Pringles instead. Strefan, Maurer Progenitor was the worst foiled card I picked up recently though. It's still pretty curved even when I've had it weighed down for a couple of days. Luckily I can grab as many silica packets I want from my job.
I put mine in old thick textbooks. Leave them in there for a while and when you take them out they’re nice and flat without applying negative curve to the positive curve. Which in my experience a couple of times if don’t too quickly or extremely, can cause wrinkles. It’s a shame they haven’t figure a fix for this. It makes collecting a nightmare.
Couldn't agree more about it being a shame they haven't fixed it. I have left a card in a 4 inch thick book with a weight on it for a month and it was curled again the next day, so I haven't had luck with that method. I wish they would bring back the old foils. Those things are so fantastic. I could only imagine the excitement it would generate.
I bought 24 phyrexian text swamps from the secret lair and they are ridiculous. I've tried compression but it doesn't work. I'm gonna have to make a reverse curler. BRUSHWAGG
While I have not tried it on Secret Lair specifically, this method has proved useful for any version of foil I have used. As noted by many, adding a slight amount of humidity to the environment also improves them.
Interesting, I’ve got a bunch of those double-sided foil tokens from different sets over the last few years and they’ve never curled even slightly. Regular foils, on the other hand....I bought the new Foretell precon after I saw the Professor give it a surprising amount of praise, and the foil Ranar curled to almost a half-almond shape within *two hours.* Utterly inexcusable- I can’t believe there’s not way more of an uproar than there already is about this problem. They’re having you pay for cards that you _literally cannot use_ outside of the most casual of playgroups. People might as well take that money and burn it- they’d get the same amount of return from it without going through the effort of buying cards.
Typically 24 - 48 hours or so, but I've forgotten them in there for a week which mostly bends them slightly the other way but the go flat pretty quick in the sleeve/deck
I use KMC Perfect Fit (regulars) with all cards. For non-commander decks I use KMC Hyper Matte and for Commander I use Dragonshield (only because I hate using two packages of 80 for a commander deck. I wish KMC Hyper Matte came in 100).
Hello! I’ve stumbled upon your channel because I also have issues with my foil cards. I love the idea of a deck box with a way to compress foil cards. My concern is, will it worsen the bending overtime?
I have not had any issues with bending being worse due to compression or reverse curl. Keep in mind, the reason these cards curl in the first place is mainly due to moisture content in the card at time of production. As some have talked about in the replies, adding humidity will reverse the curl, but it returns when the card dries out again and the fibers tighten. Stretching the fibers (via my discussed reverse curl method) is the only way I have found to get rid of the curl long term without consistently introducing additional humidity.
From what I have seen, Time shifted cards are still prone to curling, though much less so. Here is a quick comparison I put together with some foils I had on my desk. You can see there is a slight curling, but no where near as distinct as the Commander Legends foil or the regular Time Spiral foil. These have all been sitting on my desk, the Commander Legends and Time Spiral Remastered cards are not sleeved, but I have some that are sleeved and show the same curl. None of these have been "treated" by my process. imgur.com/3muiwtD
I would say the silica packs are good at keeping a limited amount of moisture at bay, but I would avoid storing your cards in any high humidity areas. Your looking for a more dry area really to store your cards. Silica will help to some extent, but I dont think it would have any bearing on it while it is being re-shaped in the mold. I havent played with different humidity levels and durations, but that would be a good idea to see what works best for flattening cards out. I also suspect there may be a difference depending on where the cards were manufactured, as there appears to be a difference in the card stock from US vs JPN/EU originating cards.
@@assemblingtron2549 thanks for the informative reply! I was thinking about some slightly humid packs like ones used for guitar storage, where it's not too dry or wet but enough to give the wood some pliability. Perhaps that could help to gently moisten the card which can later be removed to let the card "dry" in its new shape.
Dryness is what is curling the cards like you see here in the Commander Legends set. For that, a silica gel packet won't help. A humidity balancing pack is a bit different, and would help. I've found that 60% humidity for about 8 hours gets CL foils nicely flattened, but of course if exposed to a dry environment, they will curl again. For cards exposed to too much humidity, which curve in the opposite direction, a silica gel packet and warm environment can help, but extremely curved cards have the paper fibers stretched past the point where they will return on their own.
@@gregschwartz4017 great research and observation. I couldn't agree with your assessment more. Adding humidity isn't always possible, and is a temporary solution for sure. The reverse "stretch" method I employ, seems to be the longest lasting solution I have found among all different humidity levels.
Sure I could. Its something I threw together for myself, really heavily modified the Tana precon. I was running the original two commanders with that, but someone pointed out Tymna was better and in the same colors so I switched. Let me upload it to goldfish or something and I can share it with ya =). Ive been meaning to put the list somewhere anyhow.
This process is now patented by Wizards of the Coast®️ as of March 1, 2021. Performing this process exactly on Yugioh cards could result in legal action. Please proceed in secret at your own risk. 😂
'Tis a shame we have to come up with back alley solutions to be able to play what Wizards calls premium cards. I LOVE exchanging any foils I get for the same card plus extra stuff. I wish that weren't the case and I could play my fancy bling, but fuck Wizards, I guess, because they say fuck me.
I am not familiar with these cards at all, but if I was to venture a guess, it would have to do with tighter controls around environment in which they are produced, and the method for foiling that is applied.
Anyone who jut wants to see his solution without watching the needlessly long into skip to 6:00. You dont have to explain what pringling is, anyone searching it up alreay knows, damn.
there is a better way to fix theas its not to buy them until Wotc fixes the freaking issue they can do it they just dont have to or care to as there sell the hell out of them because stupid people are still willing to buy this crap in this condition and yes i can say this as im a bit guilty as well. however if we the players and collectors stop buying we send a msg to the maker that were not willing to pay top dollar for shitty production
People are just impatient, I think your video was a good showcase of what good foil quality can look like. A good tip for people with less patience is to put the progress bar sections. Idk how you do it but it's pretty cool feature when I'm watching long video game guides and can jump to sections instantly
