Throwing the last stone in an end, or the hammer, is generally considered a significant advantage. Curling rules state that the team scoring in an end will throw first in the next end and therefore lose the hammer, and a team keeps the hammer if there is no score in an end. If Team GB had scored one in the 9th end, Sweden would have had the hammer for the 10th (and likely decisive) end, so Team GB instead threw away their last stone to maintain a chance at winning in the 10th end with the hammer.
UK played amazingly. I felt they deserved a gold too, but only one team could win, so when Sweden was eliminated I was happy it was Mouat's team that won WC this year :)
