Thanks for the shout out - nice to hear wonderful comments in our world and it is much appreciated! Curly Hair Artistry is a small band of passionate stylist (we are growing too!) and just as you say in your video to call, check stylist social media and get a lesson...many in CHA do this with the desire to help you embrace your wavy/curly hair. Most of my clients are wavy and then curly - I love them all!
real life+curly girl This video like all of yours is so informative. How long should you work on your CGM care and styling routine before getting a cut? And do you Pre poo? I'm not sure I've seen you do that in your videos. 💓
As a hair stylist with wavy (not curly) hair I take offense to this. I learned to cut on curly hair (my mom and aunts) and I’ve given so many curly haired women the best cuts they’ve ever gotten by their own testimony.
Well, of course! And what an awesome unexpected surprise that you took the time to watch some of my videos. Super complimented here, and you're so super welcome. I don't say things I don't mean! :)
The Curl Whisperer - Quinn is my deva stylist. The first person to give me a Deva cut didn’t explain anything to me. Quinn went through styling, second day, pineappling, sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase & more. She is amazing. She’s in Santa Rosa, Ca at Reveal Salon.
I'm getting a cut with Jessica Guster next week and I can't wait. When I scheduled appt, she had me send pics of my hair to her and she gave me product recommendations and told me how to use them. I've been using cg methods for 3 weeks now so has settled into its wave/curl pattern. I think you said it but it needs to be dry when cut.BTW, I love your videos. So helpful and realistic, Its just hair....
+femailler1 Yes, it is just hair! That's not to say it doesn't matter, because how we feel about our appearance is important. But it is just hair ;) I'm super jealous you're seeing Jessica. Can't wait to hear how it goes. Report back!!
femailler1 your hair needs to be freshly washed that morning, fully detangled too, depending on the stylist, they will either ask you to come with your hair product free but down and curly, or styled as you normally do
It really varies from stylist to stylist from what I can tell. But gosh, not product free--if I showed up for a Deva cut with no product in my hair, they would wonder what I was doing there. I'm what you call a 'fake wavy' - other 'fake wavies' know what I'm talking about - because if I have no product in my hair, it's so fine and silky it's almost straight and completely flyaway. Styled as you normally style it seems to be the most frequent request from stylists as I've heard it. But freshly washed isn't always a requirement.
So helpful! I started CG about two weeks ago and have a devacut booked in a couple of weeks, but I am going to take your hard earned advice and do a little cyber stalking to make sure I'm getting a stylist that knows how to work with my wavy curly hair. You are just the best. :-)
Thank you so much for your video. I just scheduled my first Diva cut and the number of stylists are a bit limited in my area, most are “Diva Inspired - level 1”. Now I know what that means. Thank you for your tips on researching to make sure I don’t have to make a mistake like your first experience. Very helpful. I love how you explained and your speech is very easy to follow. “Like”
Thank you for the stylist recommendations to look up on social media! I'm prepping for my first curl cut and have been so frustrated with the images I've been finding via search engines - from what I've seen if the waves are anything like my own they've obviously been created with a curling iron.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I don't know what number curls I have. My hair is curlier than yours. It makes little ringlets when I use styling products, but not so much when I don't. The only Deva stylist in my area, well, I went to her web page and there was not a single picture of a white person on the entire page. So obviously she is fabulous with black hair, but will she be good with hair like mine? I feel funny calling up and asking this question, but I don't want to spend $100 and find out that the answer was no. Just not sure what to do in this situation. I started the curly girl method about a year ago and the person that's been cutting my hair for the past 18 years just blunt cuts my hair every few months or so. It doesn't look terrible, but I'm wondering if it would look a lot better if a curl expert cut it. What do you think?
Based on your description, I would guess your hair is in the 2 range, understanding that you can have multiple curl levels on your head. I understand your hesitation I am varying degrees of level 3, and going to a stylist with stick straight hair always gives me pause unless I have seen other clients with actual curly hair she has worked on. I can see the same happening in reverse, but I gotta think straighter hair is always going to be easier to work with, and the worst case scenario is that they use products that are too heavy for you and it comes out a bit flat. I've been told mine is just a bit too fine for some of the products for very textured hair (level 4 curl), so some of the shea butter, etc., type products are out.
I just made an appointment with a Deva Stylist and this salon is Deva Salon. Pray for me! lol I am praying this works out! I have the same type of waves as yours and I have some straight spots too! I hope they can help with those and leave the length!
I'm sure you'll be happy with it! Just go in with realistic expectations, and know you'll need to style it yourself to see the real results. Good luck! Let me know how it goes!!
Thanks for the advice!!! I’ve been looking to get a devacut for years but the closest salon was 2 hours away and my mom was not going to drive me that far for a hair cut but recently there’s a new level one devacut specialist 25 minutes from me and I’m considering going to her and seeing what this devacut is all about
Don't discredit diva inspired stylist. Just as you said the level 3 wasn't all that and someone who has a passion for hair but maybe not the finances to take the classes but still know what they are doing. ❤️❤️ But you did an excellent job of explaining everything. Loved the video
I am extremely fortunate to live walking distance from atoya and she is seriously amazing in person. She totally changed my curl game and she is just the sweetest most genuine human ever!
I am SO JEALOUS of you! One of these days, I will meet her and she will make my hair magical! LOL, kidding...maybe. What's the number 1 thing she's taught you that changed your curl game?
real life+curly girl this won’t really be game changing for you, but she definitely taught me to not be afraid of gel like I had been up till now haha. Portland is such a fun city it would be worth the trip!!!
Atoya, I am totally bowing down to you right now. "All hail the curly-wavy hair goddess, Atoya!" :) Seriously, though, you are way too sweet for saying that. Thank you. One of these days I'm going to meet you in real life and pick your brain about all things wavy!
I’ve had 2 Ouidad cuts. Great results. Now I’m curious about Deva Cuts. I had a free consultation with a Level 3 stylist (who has 2b wavy as I do!). I didn’t ask about a lesson but, as they style me with products, I will ask questions. I never straighten my hair so I will take an expensive chance in 2 months from now. Wish me luck!! I hope I don’t have to return to my Ouidad gal with my “tail between my legs”!!
I could never do a deva cut and it turn out right. My hair wave and curls is different every day. Some days is curls and other days more wavy than curly. I don't see how deva cuts works on anyone. Unless it is someone with curl pattern that is more consistent.
Agreed. I've watched a lot of vids on the system, and most say to go in with ZERO PRODUCT OR STYLING on your hair so they can see what your patterns truly are, unaltered by any product. If I did this, I would walk in looking like Anne Hathaway at the beginning of the Princesa Diaries. Mine comes out differently daily with the same routine and products. I do straighten sometimes so this may not be the best option for me.
@@jawjagrrl this. a friend is really trying to get me to devacut, and im stuck on the part where im supposed to go in dry with no product, but they still want it detangled and laying loose? gotta pick one. im sure this works for some people, but i find too many holes in their procedure.
Great video-one correction, devacurl product stylists(can't cut or style) do an online course, devacut stylists classes(1,2 and 3) only take part in New York within the devachan academy, all of it is hands on. Think of the levels this way-1- this is how we cut curls, you have a go-2- try doing it this way, you're doing this wrong or this right-3- show us what you learnt. Level 2 is where you learn everything, 1 doesn't teach much, and 3 is essentially a test. There are also several other devacurl courses like the art of super curly as the 1,2 and 3 don't cover super kinky hair as well as others
Hey, could you maybe do a video showing your virgin hair (without any products or treatments)? My hair is kind of wavy at times, but sometimes it's also very straight. I haven't started the curly girl method yet (haven't bought the right products yet) and have so far just been testing what I can achieve with just scrunching and gel... But it's not much. It's flatter than on some random days where it IS pretty wavy. I'd really like to compare my hair to yours to get a feel for how much curl I could realistically achieve. Anyway, really love your videos and your personality (and your hair)! Hope you're well.
PREACH! It’s a MUST to research someone! I drive 2 hours to get to my holy grail Deva stylist. She’s a level 3. I went to another 3 at one point and it was a nightmare. It’s taken me a good three weeks to recover from being over-moisturized by this new girl. Deva must not believe that you CAN have too much moisture. I had to pile the keratin treatments. What a mess. Fortunately, my holy grail DOES understand that AND also is well diverse in other techniques, products, etc (the other was strictly Deva), I think, too, my holy grail knows Scott Musgrave, as well. RESEARCH and research again before going! A level ANYTHING means squat alone.
I really found your video helpful! I was debating this type of haircut bc I have super curly hair which I do wear 99% of the time curly but I do enjoy the occasional straightening and I actually usually straighten it after every haircut just to see how even or off it is, I am very ocd about my hair being pretty even. So thanks for your input bc this definitely wouldn't be right for me then.
Hi Alyson , I just started curly girl this week and I’m going to wait a little bit before attempting to get a cut, but I can tell that I have a lot of damage because I foil my hair. Or I have my hair foiled I don’t do it LOL anyways what do you do if you do not have a devacut person within 75 miles? I live in western New York state and there is no one who is really close. Thank you
I'm between a not-so-pretty-beachy wave and a hair type 2; my hair is coarse and I have a lot of it. I went for a consult yesterday to a local 'devacut' stylist. I intentionally arrived with clean, product free, air dried hair. I told her I wanted to keep the length, especially in the front. She said that she would give me a "rounded" cut which would make it shorter in the front and longer in the back. She said this to me as she pointed to pictures of women with type 3-4 hair...clearly NOT my hair type at all. The she said she could also do an angled bob, shorter in the back and longer in the front--both of these options terrified me. I may be new to the curly girl method, but neither of these options sounded correct to me. Why would she suggest these two extremes when what I need is some shaping to reduce the heaviness? My gut says, 'Next!'.
She was trying to help you understand she wasn't going to leave you with the dreaded triangle cut, or with a mullet, which is easy to accidentally do with curly hair. Next time, I'd recommend going in with a few pictures of hairstyles you like, with texture similar to yours, so you know what to ask for. Pictures are everything! Thank goodness for Google and Pinterest!
I booked a regular haircut, but I think she did a deva cut. She cut it when it was dry. I only got charged a regular fee though. I have not tried straightening it yet
Thanks for your advice that's what I am trying to do get a deva cut but I am nervous to go cause I had never had a deva cut and my hair is recuperating from so much hot tools and highlights
Haydee Gonzalez A haircut will save you a lot of heartache. Do it! A Deva cut will just give your waves more potential. But hair stylists are people just like we are. It’s not a guarantee of dream hair, but the technique is overall better for textured hair. Do all the research on your local stylists you can. If possible try to find one with Hair that resembles yours!
I watched this a while back. I just had my first Devacut this past Saturday. So I wanted to re-watch. I researched and still was disappointed. All the reviews were very good. While the cut is great, she used non-CG approved conditioner on my hair (silicone and isopropyl alcohol) that made my scalp itch. And she didn’t do anything to hydrate my hair like I’ve seen in videos. She also tried techniques that caused my hair to go flat and frizz. I rewashed my hair when I got home.
I wonder if this would help me half my hair is curly 1/4 is wavy and the other 1/4 is stick straight. It’s infuriating . I would love to keep it all curly but I don’t know how to make it happen. My hair is very healthy I don’t dye it or use heat on it and is extremely thick. If anyone has tips that would help I would super appreciate it:) I live in Los Angeles
Hi Alyson, It doesn't sound like you liked the Devacut. You say in the video you're about to get another haircut. Did you get another Devacut or try something else? I heard Devacuts are better for curls than wavies. What do you think? I am trying to decide what to do myself so I appreciate your advice. thanks!
The cut was okay, but her instruction was lacking. I just had another one recently I need to make a video on. I'm very happy with my last one! Even as a wavy, getting a curly hair cut can really help to enhance your waves and definitely improve your overall shape. I'd highly recommend it!
Probs dumb 4 asking this, but am a true beginner in all this, but what do u mean go w/ ur hair in "natural state"? Like go w/ products like gel and everything in it? None? Cuz my hair appears slightly curly but mostly poofy "naturally", but only when I put gel in it does it get really curly. So which would be my natural state then??
I went to a level 3 deva stylist and am a wavy. The front was great but the back was awful and she cut it way too short. I had to go to my other stylist to fix the back. I also had a horrible experience with a Ouidad trained stylist. I think the takeaway from this is to show up with your hair as you normally style it and have it cut dry.
You nAmed a few methodes to cutting curls there is an other one that curls veruit Nice doe wavy hair. It is curlsys. I think you’d like it. Greeting from the netherlands
Ahhh I wish Deva salons would come over to my country! We have nothing like that in the UK :( I cut my hair myself and sometimes it's bad....I have a triangle head now :(
That surprises me, considering Lorraine Massey herself is British! Have you looked into other curly-cut options? I wonder where the other curly Brits go. Look up sydniescurlyworld on IG. She also has a blog. I believe she lives near Kent, so she might be a good one to ask!
I have wavy hair like you and I’m not totally sold on the idea of a deva cut, one of the deciding factors will be the cost. So with that said, what would I pay for one of these cuts?
Since you live in the dallas area, can you tell who you’ve found that you like? I want to try it but I’m terrified because I JUST started this whole CGM!
That surprises me that a Level 3 Deva stylist didn’t know how to style your hair. I get all hair types and make it a point to learn about the hair I do no matter what the Curl type
I know. Truly surprised me as well, although what surprised me more was her total nonchalance about it. She basically shrugged it off, like it didn't matter. Thank you for taking the time to do what you do, the way you do it!
Ok, thanks. I didn't even know what a deva hair stylist was! I found a guy who does this in my area. I don't know if he's level 1 or 3? It's pricey but maybe just give a shot and see what they can do with my hair. That's the guy, Scott Musgrave. I live in NC and am making the appointment.
real life+curly girl : He said that my hair needed to be a bit more grown out. In a few months I’ll see him. My hair is not as long as yours, it’s around collar length. I gave you a shout out on one of his videos. I never would have known about him if you hadn’t been talking about Deva cuts.
Can I send you a picture of my hair and can you let me know what sort of cut you would recommend?? I’m new to the wavy/curly hair world. I’ve always had trouble finding hairstyles that look good on my hair because I’ve never used anything to actually help my wavy hair. I’ve done it a few times and it’s come out amazing but i think the haircut I have right now reallyyy weighs down the full potential of them. So I’m stuck with super super knotty hair and it being weirdly curly and wavy in places. I’m trying to get a devacut but scared to make such a commitment but excited
No matter your hair type, you need LAYERS. Shorter pieces on top, longer in the middle, longest at the bottom. The choppier they are, the better they seem to work with curls, in my experience.
I don't see the expense of a deva stylist being worth it if your curl level is under 3a. If that was what mine was like in high humidity I would count my blessings! Most of what I do with product and how I style as a level 3 would be overkill on 1 or 2 level curl/wave. But even so I would have expected the stylist to know what to do with yours, that's a big part of the whole deva experience! People with curlier hair (3 and 4) will probably need cuts more often than 6 months because of the additional fragility of the hair and tendency towards breakage. I've gone a year and that was a huge mistake. Good info on what the different levels of certification involve in terms of training. There is one level 3 stylist in my area that has only 1star and 5 star reviews. There was a level 2 stylist nearby that seemed a lot more in sync with what I would want my stylist to be like. I did not know Ouidad does something as well - I prefer their products and may give this a try.
Disagree. But you're entitled to your own opinion. For my 2b/2c locks, Deva cuts have made a HUGE difference in my hair. I don't expect every stylist to be talented with wavy hair--or even kinky/coily hair for that matter. I think specialization and natural talent make up a big part of it! Glad this video was helpful to you, and I hope you find something you love in Ouidad's cuts. Curly Hair Artistry (CHA) is another great group to look into.
A normal haircut in my area is around $70 and the stylists cut my wavy hair like I'm a straight haired girl. So $70 to get a haircut designed for straight hair, which leave my wave flat and frizzy. A Deva Cut in my area is around $105 and the stylist knows how to work with hair that has texture. A specific /precise cut for a person with texture. So why should anyone pay at least $60-$70 for a haircut which doesn't benefit their hair? Rather pay more money for a haircut deigned for my texture versus shelling out money that benefit straight haired people.
I've just become addicted to your videos and I think you might live near me? Maybe I imagined it but I thought it heard that in one my binge watching sessions. Anyways, could you tell me where you went to get your hair cut? We have VERY similar hair and I would love to know if you've found a wavy hair stylist you love.
Oooh, I like it when people become addicted to my channel! LOL Thanks!! Yep, I'm in the Dallas area. I have only had two Deva cuts so far (I only go every 6-9 months or so), so I haven't shopped around in the area too much. Glenn Charles at the Michael Flores Salon cut my hair last time (very pricey, but I justify it since I only get 2 haircuts a year, so I definitely saved up for it) and he did a nice job.
Hi! Yes, Sara Rice at the Chad Rookstool salon is my #1 recommended hair artist. And I do mean artist! But I hope you'll come see me when I have my license in 2020! Yes, I'm in DFW!
Thank you. I would LOVE to see you when you start in 2020. I am loving your videos, your hair is beautiful. I have been straightening mine for yearrrrrs because I didn't know about curly girl and now I can't get enough! Thanks again! @@alysonlupo
I do not, but Diane Mary (you can find her on RU-vid and IG) lives in the NJ/NY area, so she might have some recommendations for you. You can also look on the Deva website for stylists based on zip code, and then start your light stalking from there. ;)
Aneesa Mohammed me too, I live in Spain and can’t even find any CG approved products -EVERYTHING has sulphates or silicon in it. Devachan don’t operate outside of America and I can’t find anything on google for my country, let alone my city. Any advice?
Hi there, me again! I'm going through your videos bit by bit. This was a timely one....as I need a hair cut. So I have a question for you...I've been with my stylist for 15+ years and she's left the salon and is now working out of her house semi-retiring along the way. The last couple cuts my hair seems to be getting shorter and now she's trying to correct....(not happy) and I feel like it's time to part ways. She sorta knows how to do a Deva cut as one of the ladies in the salon is a level 1 and they have instructed her. I don't think she likes to do a Deva cut because if I don't request it she doesn't do one. I'd like to switch to one of the other stylists from the salon but it's been 15+ years and I'm freaking out....!!! Sooo... do I simply make an appointment at the salon, I feel like I should call her and let her know that I need a change. I'm just looking for an outside opinion, so thoughts???
Gahhhhh, this is a tough one! It's so hard when you have a long-time relationship with a stylist. I think because she's semi-retiring, you could always use the excuse of helping her to 'lighten her load' or something like that, if you choose to go to another stylist. If you're not close enough friends that you'd go to lunch or coffee with her, then I probably wouldn't call to tell her. As awful as it feels, you're still purchasing a service from her every time you get your hair cut, and if you're not happy with it, you shouldn't purchase it anymore. That's my cold-hearted 2 cents. But if you're really close, maybe you could make the time to go by her salon and check in with her, maybe bring little present/flowers of some kind? Is that weird?? LOL
real life+curly girl Thank you....your comment of if we were close enough to go out for coffee sealed it for me....cause we're not. Yes we've gotten to know each other obviously over the years but the last several cuts I feel like I show her the pictures and she sorta does what I want but I feel like she overall just cuts it how she wants. I mentioned the whole Deva cut issue. She knows how but prefers not to. I'm just nervous to break ties and when I call the salon and show up for the cut that it will get back to her. I'm a people pleaser and reeaaallly don't like uncomfortable situations. I'll be waiting for the call or text of "hey, what's up, why'd you go somewhere else..." Pure torture for me and most likely to never happen but ya never know!! Lol!! Thanks again now I just need to call!! P.S. So far I'm loving your videos!! It's been helpful to watch everything in action!
Then your response when she reaches out to ask what's going on is, "Oh, I didn't want to be a burden since you're sort of trying to retire!" Blah blah blah. :) You can do it! Hope your next hair cut is just what you've been hoping for!
A little late for a reply but I think of the sylists that I thought I couldn't live without in the past casually announce that this would be my last appt as they are -INSERT THE THINGS LIFE BRINGS US ALL- and for me, when I get a bad cut and I move on, life is short! I could never keep going back to someone I wasn't happy with. I've also found that as sylists get older they seem to just go along with the lines of the last cut, they just don't seem to be as inspired as they were at the beginning. I have bought small gifts for my fave sylists over the years, I've had some good ones, they've all earned it! Hope you made that move by now!
how do you find the stylist on social media. i tried looking a few up but it leads me to other people's accounts. idk if im not doing it right or they just dont have an account..? whats your process on doing your research
pimpzaddyhen oh, true. You may try googling a certain stylists name but I understand some of them don’t just go by their first and last names on social media, especially IG
If anything, you could find some stylists near you and call the salon and just say you’re interested in a consult but would like to see their work if they have a social media page you could view before your appt
I think it depends on how you want to wear your hair, the style you're trying to achieve, and if you have any straighter curls/waves that need to be blended into the overall style. Overall, I think it's a good idea, but possibly less necessary than it would be for a 3b+ curly.
Curly hair has classifications and types! From 1 to 4 with letters! 2C/3A like mine is wavy/light curls! You cannot fucking call a person with wavy/light curls not a "curly girl" ! Wtf? You straightis must get ur shit together. Straight hair is simply straight, wavy hair is in the "curly" section, period. Geez. Thank you for ur videos!!! Really helpfull!
wavy hair and curly hair is different, how is wave a type of curl you should educate yourself or just look up pictures of wavy hair then look up pictures of curly hair
+maria DR Maria, I can appreciate that there are many different types of hair, and that includes a broad spectrum of curl types. Wavy hair is certainly closer to straight than it is to the coily and kinky hair types you may be referring to. But what does it matter? I'm not sure I even understand the point of your initial comment. If your hair is curlier than mine, perhaps this isn't the right channel for you. But if you're here to learn something or share a constructive point or finding with everyone else, I hope you'll stick around and do so.
Your kind of hair isn't for a deva cut lol. It's very soft waves, closer to the straighter side. Females with curly hair with spirals benefit from a deva cut.
+Jodie Jo Girlfriend, you could not be more wrong. In fact, I’m glad you left this comment just so that I can publicly address it. Anyone with wavy or curly hair can benefit from a Deva cut, if they choose to wear their natural texture. A Deva cut is no more than a style of cutting, and adding layers in small sections, where those layers are needed. I think also, there’s a huge amount of value that goes into the styling lessons that Deva trained stylists often give their customers, and that kind of lesson is valuable to anyone who is choosing to wear their natural texture. I will say, the key is finding a stylist who is familiar with wavy hair, just as you personally might want to find a stylist who is familiar with super curly hair. For me, personally, my hair has immensely benefited from my last Deva cuts, both in terms of shape, and curl pattern/structure.
My opinion could never be wrong 😇. I just feel from looking at your hair, it's a 2b in wave pattern. At the end of the day it's your hair, your choice. I just don't think your waves need a devacut. Maybe some layers and it would be fine.
I guess you know more than actual Dava Curl. ON THEIR WEBSITE THEY SAY WAVES is a form of CURLY HAIR. They say specifically wavies can benefit from it especially (wavy people often have different curl patterns on one head & their waves weigh down the curl pattern). Maybe actually educate yourself from the actual company info versus your opinion.
