They had a lot more sympathy than Columbia Pictures. The studio boss didn't care that Curly was sick, nor that Shemp died of a heart attack in 1955. He warned, "You'd better find someone else! I'm not paying for the TWO Stooges!"

From what I read Moe truly was the leader of The Three Stooges. He also looked out for and took care of Larry in his later years. Moe Howard was a stand up guy.

I heard that was Larry's idea. They were all cool in their own ways.

I recently watched the Harold Lloyd masterpiece "Safety Last." It's over 100 years old, and I was laughing out loud throughout.

He's so unique. Never be another like that guy, and so many copied him.

He was definitely my favorite. Moe really put his body on the line for the trio, but was not as likeable

Shemp was great, and not to be too negative, but Curly Joe and Joe were when the group became a corpse. Can’t watch a single one of their films.

​@@GarrettPDGA that was kinda his role. And Curly played mostly the opposite. Curly couldn't carry the group on his own anymore than moe could have. They needed each other.

Most of his 97 shorts are comedic masterpieces, from one brilliant gag or line he uttered or another! "Violent is the Word For Curly" (1938) is one of his finest performances!

I had to watch it again in order to yell that Moe's slap caused the spin. The first time I saw it, I thought the spin was caused by some kind of mechanical device!

I do the same! My wife just smiles and shakes her head as I laugh my ass off. I remember some, like the ghost of King Rootin- Tootin, from when I was a little kid. I must confess that as a class clown and generally goofy personage, I have stolen a lot from Curly. And as many times as I've seen their shorts, they still crack me up!😅😅😅

That's pretty much how we spend our Saturday evenings. It takes something pretty important to make me miss them.

I'd say it was pretty even between Moe and Curly. The annoying guy is fun, but he needs a gruff bully to play off of, which makes More equally as necessary. To put it another way, would SpongeBob be anywhere near as funny or iconic without Squidward? Would Amadeus be as great a movie without Salieri?

He was executive producer of The Three Stooges movie in 2000. Most of it was filmed in Sydney Australia. It starred Paul Ben Victor as Moe, Michael Chiklis as Curly & Evan Handler as Larry. It is worth a look if U haven't seen it.

He was the funniest ..but the heart and soul of the act was moe in my opinion. Everything you see from fleshing out each character, to the growth and longevity of the stooges...it'd all moe. The act truly died when he did

I don't know how true-to-life some of those scenes were but I remember that one was horrifying. A great performance by Michael Chiklis.

I’m almost more curious about Joe, since I know little about him.

To me (i grew up with a wardrobe full of stooges vhs - strictly of shemp or curly shorts), (curly) joe was indicative of the stooges "carrying on longer'n they shouldve." Moe and larry were always there, but itll forever be: #1 IS curly, then moe, then shemp, then larry, and thats it (sorry). Larry is the most level-headed, so arguably the best in some regards, but pales in comparison to the other /stooges/. Moe being #2 to curly is, indeed, because the stooges swapped curly for shemp and vice versa, but larry could not have been larry with a different "leader." A docu-mentary/-mini on Moe would HAVE to be daunting, as, how could one dissect the complex character of an "abusingly loving brother," (only a valid descriptor in the context of the shorts) without a detailed memoir. Ive heard horror stories of curly's excess and shemp's calloused face during his wake(?) before but a Moe-cumentary would prolly have zero laughs.. but it should be a thing

Same for me. Me and Papu would watch three stooges on amc hosted by Leslie Nielsen. We started taping them shortly after and I still have the vhs tapes to this day.

The Stooges did their own stunts and rarely used stand-ins. One exception was Three Little Pigskins where the football players chasing them crash into them from behind. The stand-ins in that scene all suffered broken bones and backs, one was almost paralyzed.

Moe actually broke several ribs on camera when he fell off a table.

For me, it's when he has to play a mental patient bitten by a dog to collect insurance money that highlights his improv and creativity. How many actors, let alone comedians, can do that same performance and do it convincingly as he did?

By a startling coincidence, there actually is a Jerome Horwitz Elementary in the town of Piqua, Ohio in our world, too. But I say it's a coincidence because the real school is NOT named for Curly, but for a doctor who happened to have the same name, who developed multiple treatments for HIV.

I liked Curly-Joe in their films. All of us kids knew he was trying to follow the impossible and we cut him slack.

I think Joe Besser, in some ways, got screwed. He had hardly any time to prepare for his role with Moe and Larry (offered the job in December 1955 and started filming barely a month later). Columbia's shorts department was running on a shoestring budget (scripts were either remakes of earlier films or adaptations of TV/movie scripts), so the quality of the films fell off considerably. He was a funny guy, and I'm glad his presence helped keep the Stooges going, but his style of comedy didn't mesh well with Moe and Larry's.

​@@MrMedictom I agree. Joe Besser was a funny, funny man in his own right. I just never thought he had the "feel" for being a Stooge. But he did the best he could under the circumstances, I think. And Joe DiRita did well given what he had to do, I thought. Were they Curly? No. But in their own way and their own style, they were funny.

I think studios wanted to preserve the mystique. For a long time, they really weren't sure how to handle the whole 'reality' side of things.. hell even when I Love Lucy did reruns, at first they put a framing device in front, of the characters reminiscing, because they felt like the audience needed to somehow feel in touch with the "now" of the show like it was real
