California history including the gold rush make up this unit. It's a mix of biographies, historical fiction, resource books, kits and a 'how to draw' book. I think I'm most looking forward to the kit we got for panning for gold. We also really like the 'Who Was..." books for their simplicity, content and illustrations. No unit of mine would be complete without a hands-on activity and this unit includes a 'gold' excavation kit.

yay! We did an entire year on California History this year. 4th grade California history is always my favorite when it comes around.

We love Island of the Blue Dolphins and By the Great Horn Spoon. Oh, check out your local parks system. We actually went on a field trip a few years ago where we got to gold pan. I love that field guide. I looks awesome!

I'm looking forward to this unit, but we ran out of time to do it this year! That's okay, we'll roll it over into next year, though we might take out the panning for gold kit ;) -Hana

That How to Draw Native California Plants and Animals book looks wonderful. I wish there was something similar for our state. My daughter would love it. We are in Ohio. I might just buy the California one anyway. (My husband grew up there.)

If you can't find the that particular book, there are many "learn how to draw" books that might work out. We've gotten ones related to our unit studies to help the kids draw viking ships or medieval castles and such. But the one for California is beautiful :) -Hana

The audio book for Island of the Blue Dolphins was amazing. My kids loved it. And after there is that one special from PBS that was so cool. Worth the look up. We got the audio book from library. We've been studying California history all year. We don't do it daily though. We are just now getting to the Gold Rush and have that same project.

Nice selections. I used BFB's California History. The old and new one-both guides are really helpful. Obviously, the newer one is updated and has a nice, easier to find, selection of books. If you need more ideas: Dover has the California Gold Rush coloring book, There is also the book (look for it used) Our Golden California by Juanita Houston. It has oodles of info for reference. Chang's Paper Pony was an easy read and fun (for my son) also. That is by Eleanor Coerr. Have you read Blue Willow? It is a story of a girl (so I read it aloud) from I think the great depression (been a couple years-LOL) but it is good too. It's by Doris Gates. Some other good reads: If You Lived at the Time of the Great San Francisco Earthquake (Ellen Lavine), Riders of the Pony Express (my son loved) by Ralph Moody; and a fun one but not easy to find (it's old) is This is San Francisco by M Sasek. They also suggest Pedro: The Angel of Oliver Street (but never found via the library, so never read)-for the study. The Cruise of the Arctic Star is an interesting but sometimes boring (oh did I say that?) read by Scott O'Dell. My son liked it but that is b/cuz he's into that sorta thing. He intertwines the explorers into the story here and there. If your son is interested, and hasn't covered the explorers yet-then this is a good time to add them in. Cortes, Drake, Cabrillo, Viscaino were all notable ones for CA. HTH

So the audio book of Island of the Blue Dolphins was fantastic. We really enjoyed it. There is also a show on PBS (I think I'm going to try and find it) on the Channel Islands (I grew up on Catalina so I loved it) that talks about all the islands and The Lone Woman of San Nicolas, animals, restoration, etc. my kids loved it.

Oh thanks for the tip, I'm going to add the audio to our wishlist. You grew up on Catalina!? That's really neat. How long were you there and how is it different than mainland life? -Hana

Pepper and Pine I lived in the island from newborn- three and then split my time between there and Maui (plus various Orange County locales) until 9 and then after my parents split I spent every other weekend there till I was 16. My uncle played the organ at the casino. My dad was a developer and hotel / restaurant owner. He grew up on island so our family has a lot of history there. It was awesome. I loved living there. Being an islander I got to see more of it then most people do. It's a magical place. I've never been anywhere else that compares. I was even in a few of the brochures for the island when I was little because my dad was chamber president. I will have to try and find some. And yes - I went to school there. Everyone always asks. I was a Lancer. The school is amazing and even at a young age I appreciated how gorgeous it was - and small! 😉

What a unique and somewhat iconic childhood you had! Sounds like a movie or a book :) I've only been a couple times to the island, and I don't think we made the most of it. I'm looking forward to seeing the documentary you shared the link to.

We happened to catch it on PBS - and recorded it. Maybe it will be on again. Here is the link to our local PBS station that had it. www.kpbs.org/news/2016/mar/15/west-west-tales-californias-channel-island/

Haha!!! I was about to say your previous comment seemed familiar because I remember looking up a documentary to told me about. That's just too funny. I'll be looking for the audio for Island of the Blue Dolphin the next time we go to the library. Thanks for the suggestion :) -Hana

Hey Jairy! I haven't put together the full unit study for this unit and we ran out of time to do it this year, so we will roll this one over to next year. I'm thinking 4-6 weeks would be a good amount of time. -Hana

HI Hanna, Just curious, how do you incorporate your unit studies with your Waldorf curriculum social studies? does it get overwhelming? I was looking at Oak Meadows for next year and I love thematic/unit study learning, but it looks like there are set social study lessons in the Oak Meadow curriculum.
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 7 лет назад
You ask an excellent question, Sarah. So I'd rather just stick to the curriculum, but I can't do individualize lessons for each child, so I'll modify the main lesson into a unit study, so I can do materials for a wider age range. I haven't actually used Oak Meadow, though I've seen it and am familiar with it. I think with any curriculum you can modify portions to do a unit study.

These are some great selections! We'll be starting California history next year so I'm definitely saving your video for review again later. I love the replica coins!
@PepperandPine
@PepperandPine 7 лет назад
The replica coins are really fun to look at, but they are more of a novelty and we haven't used them (from our other units) hardly at all. Maybe it's because they are enclosed, or maybe because I don't have a specific lesson for them. A coin rubbing might be fun though. We meant to get to this unit this year, but we've run out of time, so we'll roll it over until next winter. -Hana

I'll estimate six weeks, but our units always go over. Sometimes work trails into the next unit even though all the reading is complete. -Hana
