Yup, because that's how people talk. If someone hits their thumb with a hammer, they don't go completely silent and say "well it really hurts when you hit your thumb with a hammer".
“Hell” and “damned” were used once in the movie Incredibles 2. And we almost heard Lucius Best blurt out the F word, but was cut mid sentence before cutting to another shot.
I think a big problem is that parents are so desensitized to PG movies that are essentially glorified G-rated movies that only get a PG-rating because of one or two toilet jokes essentially assuming every modern movie with a PG-rating treats it’s audiences like babies who can’t handle anything. When PG literally means “parental guidance”.
I feel like another example that should've been included is Incredibles 2, in the scene where Elastigirl and Evelyn are talking and Evelyn straight up says "Promote the hell out of it" enthusiastically. Caught me off guard because I didn't expect it
I love the sorts of loopholes some of these movies take to sneak some words in. Imagine the board meeting between the execs and the writers, and the writers are trying to explain "no no no, Shrek is talking about Donkey! Donkey is an ass, which is a real and family friendly word for donkey, as in the animal! He has to save his ass!"
For the veggietales example, the island of perpetual tickling wasn't a substitute for hell. In the real story, Haman is hanged at the end. The island was a substitute for death by hanging. I think that justifies it a lot more.
Yes, in those days, the general consensus was that you died if you went and stood before the King uninvited. The Island of Perpetual Tickling was indeed that substitute.
When a movie or show has the balls to do something different and out of the comfort zone, I think that's a good sign. That's part of why I enjoy Puss n' Boots 2 so much.
Agreed, personally i don't see why people don't want their kids to watch movies that have substituted or real curse words. Like, them kids are gon' see it someday.
Actually, the Island of Perpetual Tickling was a substitute for the death sentence. Since that VeggieTales movie was based off the story of Esther, in the original story, when the assassins were outed and exposed, they were sentenced to death.
Given the context of the word ass, Shrek was talking about Donkey since a male donkey is literally known as a jackass. When Shrek said, "I have to save my ass," in this context he was technically saying, "I have to save my donkey," even though ass is considered a curse word. Still, I think since we saw Shrek and Fiona save Donkey right after Shrek said that line, it's heavily implied that Dreamworks was letting that one slide given the context it was being used in.
I wonder if people realize you can technically say the word shit, uncensored, in a PG rated film, animated or not. It's the strongest swear word you can use before you're veering into PG-13 territory
I have to disagree on the point you made with VeggieTales. They weren’t substituting Hell for The Island of Perpetual Tickling. It was meant to substitute the plot of Haman to exterminate the Jews because Mordecai wouldn’t bow to him. Then when the king realized he’d been tricked he had Haman executed. The story had nothing to do with Hell…
Yeah a terrible example. His whole point doesn't make sense, not only because it is not founded in what the scene is actually saying, but because Veggietales is and always has been satire and not meant to be taken seriously.
As a catholic Ur right it didn’t have anything to do with hell if they were they would say it Like hell is a bad place like yeah they don’t wimp out on the word hell
They are both making family movies that are pg rating i think they are both for all since my sisters watch shrek and megamind and madagascar as kids i grow to love those movies as well but i was a bit of a mix since they didnt watch a lot of disney movies but overall i say these companies make movies that bith adult and kid will enjoy
I think the reason that movies are getting more open with cursing could also be that their audience is getting older, and the fact that kids are cursing at the age of like 8 now💀
I mean pissed is slang a lot of young people used that kind of deviates from being a curse word. It has been used so much that it has joined the likes of "rizz," and "simp." the curse connotation has been lost.

The brand new Trolls movie caught me off guard. There was more than a few cuss words. They also had a lot of drug references too, and I was dying laughing! Really surprised me.
It’s funny because when I was watching Across The Spider-Verse in theaters, I was thinking to myself “Wow, I haven’t heard this much cursing in a PG movie since Shrek”.
As well as "ass", I think 'Shrek' might well have also contained a fair few "bloodies" as well- ("bloody", for the benefit of our American and Canadian friends, being a mildish-to-moderate cussword over here in the U.K., and also, in Ireland, New Zealand and Australia!)
As an Australian curse/swear words never really ever get my attention but I definitely have noticed more of them popping up in movies, honestly though it does make the movie more realistic as if any of us were in these situations im sure we would be swearing a lot the only thing is for movies targeted towards children yes I understand that its not appropriate to have them in there but for any thing pg rated who cares anymore like its pg for a reason. I get that everyone has different opinions and its up to each parent/ person to decide what’s appropriate for them and/ or their child
My only issue with it is for the parents that want to guard their children from it, there's no warning. PG used to mean there were certain boundaries that won't be crossed. It's fine to change the rules, but to do so without telling those who depend on those boundaries isn't the answer in my opinion. Even with the parent being around, there's almost no way for a parent to know a word will be said until it's said. It makes it hard to judge what will be appropriate for their child. If a child sees a character they love say something, it wilm be easy for them to adopt it in their own language. I personally wouldn't be bothered by it. But i dont have kids. I can understand how a parent wouldn't want their child exposed to certain things so for them, it would be nice if ratings were adjusted for this new trend.
I mean, for the "Hell" part, It kinda just depends. Weird how people can say "Heaven" and its fine, but "Hell" is a bad word? Dont really understand how that works-
Puss in Boots the last wish is most likely one of my favourite movies. Sitting with the family and hearing "all I smell is bullsh-" made all of us laugh.
The reason Veggietales didn't say hell isn't because of censorship, it's because the series is built on the idea of never directly referencing religion, but doing it in a way that gets the point across
Curse Words In Animated Movies, Disney VS DreamWorks. All these movies are rated PG, excluding the VeggieTales one that doesn't have a rating. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Yes, Miles said or almost said "a**" in a kids movie, a word that does not belong. Elemental: No, Ember didn't curse, she said "ash". Moana: Yes, Moana might have said the B word, "b**ch" off-screen. Puss In Boots 3: The Last Wish: Yes, Kitty was about to say "bulls***" guaranteed. Puss In Boots 3: The Last Wish (again): Yes, Perrito was saying unknown censored curse words. Next Gen: Yes, Momo was saying censored curse words, and that was happening often throughout the movie. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: Yes, Superfly said "What the hell", but in that movie, characters are allowed to say that because the movie is PG. VeggieTales: Esther: The Girl Who Became Queen: Maybe, Haman might have been referring to Hell. Shrek: Yes, Shrek said the word "ass", but he might have been referring to the Donkey in the movie.
Mutant Mayhem has so many cuss words and i LOVE it. It was also gonna have like stronger curse words but didnt make the final cut. Mikey was gonna say: “WTF IS THAT?!” And Raph was gonna say: “What is wrong with youre SH*T?!” OPENLY!! But the movie has words like “damn” “piss” and ofc “hell” and its mostly Superfly cuz ICE CUBE (his va) lmao they should had let them curse more. OH! And April also said hell. And this one is hard to hear but i OBVIOUSLY noticed (i watch this movie too much) was that Leo almost said “oh sh*ttt” Yall should watch this movie if u havent already I LOVE IT
When I watched Mutant Mayhem I was shocked when there were two characters that had their eye scratched or stabbed out as well as Superfly saying "piss". But I don't understand why some people got upset when he said "hell" during that particular scene. They say "hell" multiple times throughout the movie why was that time so shocking?
Dont forget about the movie Antz i love that movie and i remember them saying “whatever you bitching about” and “damn thats good” or “dont tell that tightass anything weaver” and more great movie
Animations back in the day (I’m looking at a particular one from the late 60’s. You do your own research) had a lot more freedom in some way and one in particular really did stuff you would not see.
One I remember from even before Shrek was a "Damn!" uttered in Secret of NIMH (1982). Though given the G rating, there was a good amount of intense scenes and a touch of blood that could have upped it to PG, which kind of overshadowed the single word.
Meanwhile in '90 the live-action TMNT movie saw Raphael cursing, topped by yelling "DAMNNNN!!!!" so loud it echoed. And us kids giggled. No one tried getting the movie boycotted over it.
